You can make this in a pressure cooker not with a normal rice cooker. 1. Put 2 cups of washed and drained rice in a pressure cooker. No need to soak it. 2. Add the caramel sauce, seasoning sauce, honey, jujubes, raisins, pine nuts, chestnuts, and the dried cranberries (if used). 3. Add 1 cup of water and set the pressure cooker to make rice. Check out the description box in any video and follow the link for the written recipe. Every video has a written recipe where I provide more detailed information such as ingredients, step by step directions, stories behind, photos, and tips.
I bought 3 of your books. One for myself, one for my patient ( he had been exposed to korean food during the vietnam war working with korean soldiers. His American wife makes kimchi for him. His father was a Korean war vet too), & a student whose mom is Korean but she lives many states away from mom. Your cook book means so much more for us. Oh my coworker is bringing a copy to Germany next week since her son (who lived in korea for 3 years) lives in Germany now with a korean girlfriend. they make Korean food there all the time too. My coworker was so excited to see how nice the book was. Of course this was my recommendation :) Thanks. keep up the great work!
We have quite similar dish called Wajik Durian. It's much more stickier and mixed with durian. Though we don't add nuts to it. This recipe looks lighter and seems to suit my tastebud. Gonna try it later ;)
Finding you is like finding an oasis in a desert! - I'm a Brazilian Korean whose parents were too busy to teach us about preparing Korean food. You are a wonderful teacher & now I can carry on the tradition with my family - your videos R filled with love & lovely humour:)
For anybody wondering what jujube is, it's also known as the red, Korean, Chinese, or Indian date. She uses dried ones here, so other dates may work as well, but it won't be the truly authentic dish.
I remember my Grandmother & my Dad making this when I was little. I always thought, I'll never learn to make this. Finally learned how to make it!! And it is the same taste as I remembered!! So good! My wife is "hooked"!!!!! I'm Canadian-Korean and she is Canadian. Thank you so much for your recipes!! ( brings more Korean food to the table)!!! We have tried other of my favorites and sooooooo good!
Maangchi, I'm so happy you posted this recipe! I lived in Korea for 2 years. The best dish of ALL I've eaten there was 약식. I went to my best Korean friend's house and his mother served it for an afternoon snack/early dinner. I can still remember how homemade 약식 tasted ^_^ Thank you!
Oh yeaaaah!!! my korean friend ajhumma used to make this when we were studying chinese and they were amazing!!!!! I need to try make them!!!! By the way, your food not only looks tasty but also is so beautiful!! And you always made me hungry when you talk about the good smell. I love your channel!
My boyfriend is American, but his adoptive mother was Korean. My highscool crush❤✌🙏 I can now watch and cook and it brings back such wonderful memories. Thank you❤🙏✌
thank you for being my savior. we are about to make full course Korean cuisines as our finals and this is our dessert. we can now finally do it. thank you so much.
Maangchi u know your ingredients are not available in India so cant make what u r cooking but still i have seen so many videos. I just love the way you tell recipes.
I bet if I bake it the second time instead of steaming, this would make a great energy rice cake for bicycle training. Baking would maybe make it stick together better. Tasty and nutritious with enough energy to pedal for another hour. Something to look forward to on a long ride. Thanks Maangchi!
I just made this tonight for dessert after having jajang myeon for dinner. only tip I have is if you only want your yaksik to be slightly salty only use 1 tbsp soy sauce. that's how much I used and it came out perfect. another thing: I used cranberries, raisins and walnuts and it came out delicious! Even my boyfriend who is kinda super traditional american boy, tried jajangmyeon and yaksik. he loved both. thanks maangchi
I bought jujubes at the farmers market today, I'm planning to make yaksig this week. I can't wait to try it. A Korean friend of mine told me "I don't like yaksig, it's too healthy." Haha. But I have faith in Maangchi that this will be delicious.
Hello there! I love you so much you are great cook and loving personality. I love watching your video because of your cleanliness and descriptive information while cooking and not to forget your cute accent!💙💙💙
I love glutinous rice so much and I don't need rice when I have glutinous rice and eat everything with it. This dish almost the same with one of traditional food of Malay tradition call as Wajik just the different this one got dried fruit and nut. the similarity is both sweet and use glutinous rice. Great recipe maangchi love it. gonna try it later.
In tamilnadu we call this as Pongal, and ofcourse with some changes in the way we prepare and also the ingredients..we also used to eat this as breakfast or snacks..

Nice recipe Maangchi! We make something called Bao Zhong in Chinese which is the same glutinous rice, wrapped with bamboo leaves and steamed for several hours. Inside are chesnuts, salty yolk of an egg and pork belly!
Hi Maangchi! This is now in my top 15 of favorite videos from your channel. I love sweet and savory combinations. The steamed sticky rice looked awesome, so beautifully cooked. The finished dish looked gorgeous alongside your cup of freshly brewed flower tea. I'm sure that my niece will be asking me to make this with her, soon =) Kamsahamnida

Scott J glutinous rice holds its shape pretty well once its completely cooled, so it'd make a nice chewy snack even if you don't bake it :)
Scott J I thought of "Korean granola bars" as I watched the recipe :)
expialidocious I was thinking of that too
I wouldn't recommend baking it...yaksik is softer. The only semblance that it bears to granola bars is that they're in bars.
Angela C. There is much more resemblance than that - a whole grain (rice vs oats) packed with fruit and nuts + sugar and spice ^^
I think that the YAKSIK will be an healthier and easy to eat diet complement.
Thanks for sharing.
After all these years, I've finally made these! They just came out of my oven (I didn't have a steamer so I improvised 🙂). They smell so good!!!
Thank you!!! Maangchi.

I bought a jujube tree 2 years ago, This Sept I as they started to dry and still mostly green, I used them as apples in an apple pie since they have a mild apple flavor. Tried making this the cheats way in a pressure cooker and found the rice to be undercooked and some a little burnt on the bottom.
So will try doing it the traditional way. I am sure it will turn out better! Stick to tradition and you can’t fail 😁
