Built in 1220, Dunstaffnage Castle 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 was long owned by the Scottish King Robert the Bruce. According to tradition, an older complex once stood here in which the Stone of Scone was kept until the 9th century.

    -----
Dunstaffnage Castle was built around 1220 for the McDougall clan and is considered one of the most powerful fortresses in the west of Scotland from that time.
From here, the sea routes through the Firth of Lorne and the land route along Loch Etive and the River Awe were controlled.
The castle stands on a rocky pedestal 6 to 9 meters high. The choice of this location made it impossible for attackers to dig under the walls. It also made it difficult to destroy them, as they could not be easily reached with siege equipment.
The fortress, which is still very impressive today, has an unusual ground plan due to the place of its construction, which forms an irregular trapezoid. It has three round towers, of which the northern one is much more massive. Probably this one originally served as a residential tower. In the fourth corner there is the gate. However, this was built only in the 16th century. Previously, there was also a round tower in this place, in which the castle entrance was located.
Inside the castle walls there are remains of residential buildings from the 16th and 18th centuries. In them can be discovered several fireplaces and hearths from that period.
In the courtyard there is also a well shaft, which was cut deep into the rock.
According to tradition, there was an older fortification on the site of the present castle. In this, before the 9th century, the Stone of Scone is said to have been kept, which played a role in the coronation ritual of the Picts and later the Scots and the British.
At the beginning of the 14th century, Robert the Bruce conquered Dunstaffnage Castle after the Battle of Brander. The castle remained in royal possession for a long time. In 1469 the Duke of Argyll became the lord of the fortress. Thus, the castle came into the hands of the Clan Campbell.
The clan used Dunstaffnage militarily until the Jacobite uprisings. In 1746 Flora MacDonald, who had helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after the Battle of Culloden, was imprisoned here for a short time. After that she was taken to London.
After the castle was damaged in the fire of the gatehouse in 1810, it stood empty for several decades. It was not until 1904 that the gatehouse was restored. It is still inhabited today.
The rest of the castle and the ruins of Dunstaffnage Chapel, whose story we tell in another video, are open to the public. The site is managed by Historic Scotland.

An was das wohl liegen mag ?

So kanns gehen. Nun gibts also einen weiteren Schauwert. :)
