The 'Dreaded' Bay Of Biscay - P&O Arvia Transatlantic Crossing

- Onboard the P&O Arvia on its Transatlantic journey and we hit a bit of rough weather in the ‘dreaded’ Bay of Biscay.
Arvia is heading south, cruising across the Bay of Biscay and beyond to the Canary Islands.
Three sea days before docking at the Port of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
What will it be like onboard the ship as the captain announces that the wind is gusting 50 knots and the swell is 5 metres plus? Most of the outside areas and the promenade deck of the Arvia are closed.
When will the warm weather arrive and will we get a chance to get in the ship’s hot tubs?

Trust you enjoyed your birthday, Marcus🎉. Cheers!
Yes I did, thanks 👍
Hi Marcus, awesome live video of the ship and ocean. How are you doing? I'm doing well. Have a great day see you next video 😊
We're doing well, thanks.
I did a few crossing’s going from Liverpool to Isle of Man in the 70s with my grandparents-Some of them was scary 😁
Those small ferries can be rough.
Boy imagine little boat caught in wrestling with that for eight hours 😮meals being very narrative on this one😮competition marcus safe travels to you both .😊looks like you sitting in the ocean after a storm😮hope you had a wonderful birthday Marcus .😊
Yep, wouldn't like being on a little boat in that weather.
Excellent i really enjoyed watching this. Glad you are having a great time.
We're back home in the wind and rain.
When on Royal Caribbean they rarely stopped you going on deck. Even when really rough. Got some great videos. Recently on PO though they stopped you going on deck in a brisk wind.
I’ve been on rough crossings on the Irish Ferries Ulysses Cruise Ferry, between Holyhead and Dublin in the Club Class Lounge at the bow of the ship, both summer and winter, daytime and overnight crossings and it’s not been too bad, you just have to remain seated during rough weather on the Irish Sea
We've never done that crossing but heard the Irish Sea can be rough. Luckily these ships are so much more stable than the ferries.
Just home from Transatlantic Rome to Miami on Explorer of the Seas was totally calm the whole way just fab and the weather was great in fact got sunburn middle of trip 13 days
It was calm with us once we got south to the Canaries. Sounds like you had a good time 👍
You both have made us want to investigate sailing from Southampton! (never did it before), you made it look easy, and this Bournemouth thing I am amazed, never knew about flights etc, although it is way to far south for us to fly & drive back, maybe a hotel stay and parking in Southampton, I don't now yet, anyway great stiff to ponder over.
They do offer transfers to and from Southampton from a few airports before and after the cruise.
The ship looks fab 🫡 and it’s getting warmer. 😆
Yep as we got towards the Canary Islands it suddenly got much warmer.
I have travelled through the Bay of Biscay a few times. On one occasion the bow of the ship would kneel into the sea, we were enjoying 😮 a gale force 10. I was on the 5th deck looking over the rail and was soaked with seawater. I like to think I have sea legs but I couldn't eat for 2 days. Looking inside some of the eateries not many diners were there. Though enjoyed all the cruises I have been on.
I wouldn't fancy that, luckily the ship was quite large and stable compared to some of the smaller ones we passed.
Rough, didn,t see any rolling or slamming. Been from Holyhead numerous times in rougher weather in a far smaller ship, and wasn’t bad.
You don't get the movements like you do on a small ship but you still get the rise and fall. The wind was force 10 with 5 - 6 metre swell.
Haha you survived the bay of Biscay hope you had plain sailing after that 😊 enjoying your videos
Yes, we did. The weather was much better.
I did the opposite in July traveling from Lisbon to Dover. The seas were much calmer but there were a couple of ports that we were unable to dock due to high winds and needing to tender. Jersey was one andSt. Ives another. Hopefully you will get some better weather in the Caribbean.
Yes, by the third sea day the weather was much better and the sea much calmer.
Once upon a time, my Dad and I took the ferry from Porthcawl to Ilfracombe.
I thought we weren't going to make it back to Porthcawl 😬😬😬😬😬😬
The Waverley, that is a rough crossing.
Cabin 9.123 again - yes it was a little rough and your video shows that heaving sea ! But, yes, it was not as bad as we feared it might be so we were able to enjoy the experience if that is the correct term. We met with a couple whose cabin was up on Deck 17 later in the trip and she had been seasick throughout the trip even after we had arrived at the Caribbean so being higher up clearly has an effect. Mind you she had only got a wristband rather than tablets so maybe it was not as effective.
Incidentally, one minor thing that I was not so keen on was the high glass plating all around the Promenade deck above the handrails. This meant that you could not rest your arms on the hand rail and peer down at the sea which I like to do and kind of 'cages you in'. Only a minor point...someone told me it was not so much to prevent people from possibly falling but streamlining the ship which makes sense I suppose but you lose some of the thrill of being out on the open deck.
Yes, we went up to the Crows Nest bar and you could really feel the motion up there. Pleased that the tablets did work and we didn't miss out on anything (both of us are bad travellers).
Love the video😂
Cheers 👍
@@flydriveexplore where are you now
Rough ? That’s calm to what I have seen and experienced over many years at sea .
Yes, but you're probably used to it and not a landlubber like us.
Thank goodness you don’t say “hi guys” that in itself made me want to subscribe.
Great video !
Interesting.
I went on a Fred Olsen cruise and it was awful
So thanks for this video 👍
Thanks for watching. We've only tried P&O so far as we only started cruising in May.
@@flydriveexplore I’ve only done Fred Olsen and it’s put me off cruising for life
Brilliant video, esp as we're doing this next year.
One (slightly), off topic conversation question but ... Please can you tell me where you get your shirts from? Every time my fiancee watches your videos she says "what a nice shirt"!
Thanks, you'll have a great time.
Mrs W buys most of my shirts the one I'm wearing is by Weird Fish
Thank you!
Hi guys done the repositioning cruise a few times and then stayed on to do the next one.I’ve been in Biscay in a lot worse than that doing the same cruise on Azura a few years ago we had weather far worse than that until Madeira. One consultation was we were one of the few in the dining room and the service was tremendous.Several passengers were complaining about the “deck slap” caused by the waves. Is Paul Brown the captain?
It was our first crossing, although it was rough, it wasn't as bad as some of those horrific journeys like you mention. Yes, Paul Brown was the captain.
Could you let me know how long from Southampton to reach the bay of biscay
It's about a day.
Just curious as to what it feels like on the elevators, when the ship is swaying?
We didn't use them that much but they all continued to work normally. The swaying is quite slow, it's not a sudden movement.
They felt ok the lift although they didn’t have many in use, didn’t like the bay of Biscay I might get to like it next or not, going on Iona then
I enjoyed watching your video, did you feel this ships movement side to side ie swaying or was it more up and down? Thank you
It was gentle but a few times during the roughest time you felt a bigger sway.
Call that rough ,should try in south Atlantic in the middle of winter than you will know what rough id
I think we'll leave that offer for now 🤮
Hi Marcus me and my wife was on that cruise the bus at can get a bit rough
Despite the first couple of days of rough sea, we enjoyed the cruise .
@@flydriveexplore so did we the weather and seas got better when we got to the canaries
@@nickyg4776 Very nice weather and calm from Gran Canaria onwards
Hi haven’t seen your video yet, didn’t venture out on the bay of biscay when I was same time as you and your wife.I did see you both but didn’t know about your videos until today. I had been watching Ben and David, I did get to speak to them. I was very glad the rest of the Atlantic trip was much calmer to Tortola.when you press button to subscribe is there a fee to watch anymore videos
We had a storm and they were hundreds being 🤢 sick i was feeling sick but my mum she was in bed 🛏️ lol...if we can avoid it next time we will.
