This design of thrust reverser also has sort of an air brake effect too. So you’re not only getting reversed thrust but two times the amount of air brake.
Man love the old 200s. Smoked like a chimney, loud as hell, burned fuel, but spooled up quick and hauled ass!!! Our pilots use to love them on the short hauls.
It never fails to amaze me every time I travel by air. I would like a window seat, just to look at the flaps deployed, retracted etc. during takeoff and landing.
I remembered a long time ago in 1970. I was young. I rode the same seat there. I watched when it arrived. I never saw that for the first time in my life. It Sounds so LOUD! Great video! Thumbs up! Cheers!
Once, I was seated next to a first-time flyer in that exact row, she had the window. She told me she was VERY worried, so I said I would explain every noise and everything happening on the wing, and reassure her that it was all completely normal. So I did, but she was still nervous as heck. I didn’t think to tell her about the thrust reverser being about to open, ahead of time... oops... when it happened, she practically shit her pants...
Compared to newer 737 models, maintenance costs are very high. But a big advantage is that You`re able to land almost everywhere with the slim engines, even on a meadow. One reason that some of them are still flying, for instance in Canada ( Nolinor Aviation ).
YES, this was the old thrust reverser on aircraft, called the clam shell. The reverser was deployed at the back of the engine. Today the thrust reverser is at the front of the engine. The first time I saw this was on Frontier Airlines 737-100 in the late 60's when we flew from Denver, CO -> Scottsbluff, NE -> Grand Island, NE -> Lincoln, NE and finally Omaha, NE - COOLEST THING EVER. They also did what they called a POWER BACK. Most Airlines utilized this all the time in RURAL airports, where there were no ground support equipment, e.g. Scottsbluff, Grand Island Nebraska.
well thanks for the nice comment Im always learning something new reafing your comments. This really helps the community and viewers who are more interested in the technical aspects of the video. Greetings from patrick :)
@@AirClipscom you are welcome Patrick and I am so glad you have shared this video, many people either do not know or forgot about clamshell thrust reverser. BTW, I forwarded your video with several people, hope they go here :-) Bobby
OH MAN, that was my first experience on a FRONTIER AIRLINES 737-100 out of DEN Stapleton. My Father Robert Estey worked for Frontier both 60's and 70's.
Everything belonging to 70s is stunning! the aircrafts, the home decoration, the style of life, everything! I wish that the time return back to the 70s!
I flew Piedmont Airlines in 1982. First time I ever got in a plane. LaGuardia, New York to Asheville, North Carolina. I remember watching the clamshell thrust reverser/ speed brake deploy. Great memory.
Brings back memories of my first flight on the 200 series around 1970ish Britannia Airways . One things for sure the 737 was the back bone of most airlines. Great aircraft and a few still flying around .
I just travelled back in time 30 years... I am 6 years old, flying from Inuvik NWT to Edmonton Alberta, so I can see a diabetic specialist. I've been playing Tetris on my (first generation) Game Boy for 4+ consecutive hours, and watching the engines unfold, as the plane lands, is the ultimate high point of the trip (even cooler than romping through West Edmonton Mall with 1/2 a years worth of allowance in my fist). X3 -thx for the trip.
That is the exact view that got me into aviation, along with the noise. B737-300 Birmingham (BHX) to Tenerife South (TFS) on board a Britannia Airways machine when I was just 9 years old. From that day, I was hooked, and I still am. I have to say, if I ever win big on the lottery, I'm gonna have a hunt around for a decent B732 and have it as a biz jet, and then I'll buy a 727-200 aswell!
I still remember that...2nd time I ever flew on an airplane was with a -200 (1st time was on a -300). The -200 always looked (and sounded) better in my book.
Wow the first plane I ever flew on was this model from PHL to PIT in 1995 on USAIR. I still remember it to this day. I was 10 years old. That sound is epic, you dont hear those anymore or see the great smokies.. This was great, childhood memories.
It brings back so good memories from my childhood when I used to take these Varig's 737 200 visit my grandparents. So many things have changed since but those good times will always be alive in my mind.
I remember sitting at the viewing area by SFO as a little kid. I loved seeing the 737 pulling up!! They were some of the loudest and smokiest of the time!!! Such cool old planes to watch!! The newer one are still very cool too but they dont have the same character of the older ones... thanks for sharing this!!
Excellent! I miss seeing those -200's. And the noise. I love how the piece of engine pylon fairing is attached to one of the clamshells -- comes along for the ride!
Use to love boarding in Butte years ago. Down from the outdoor balcony, across the tarmac, & up the stair truck into the 737-200, with less then 30 people on board.
HA! Best seat in the house, next to the cockpit itself. I've always loved watching the wings do their thing, but the added bonus is the thrust reverse on older aircraft like that 737.
737-200 first ever airplane I went on when I was a child and in the rear seats. Wow it made some noise on take off and landing. Felt and sounded like an earthquake. Beautiful airplane!
No FMC to program, no waiting for the IRS to stand up. Just start up and go. Hand flying the 200 is a dream. Very little pitch change with thrust. Flys like a Piper warrior and just as easy to land. Boeing should have retired the design long before the 800 and definitely before the Max.
Lovely footage. BTW, I thought the logo light on the wingtip was an exclusive design feature that started with the B737-300 and newer aircraft. One never goes to bed without learning something new.
Great airplane. Rode it many times back in the day. Considering all the issues Boeing is dealing with the Max and NG series 737's they should go back to the 200's.
Takes me back to 1997. Going to Colorado with my best bud to vacation @ Durango & Silverton + some other railroads. I always sat over or just behind the left wing.
Remember, I was younger. That jet engine was loud, until replaced new B737-300 much less noise and more passenger was improved and until farewell in 47 years of B737 services, we replaced new AirBus 32x-xxx from since 2015. Later years, we heard that B737-Max were crashed in twice, that sadly. However we're lucky that no longer B737 at last.
My first ever jet flight was on a 737-200. In those days if you got to the airport early to check in you could ask for a window seat IIRC I got seat 4A, written on the boarding pass/ticket with a felt pen! Anyway, it was a great experience. First of many flights on the 737s.
Val-d’Or is actually where I live. I was looking for thrust reverser videos, and i got recommended this video. I’m guessing this is a Nolinor Aviation 737? I think they’re the only 737’s landing here in Val-D’or.
Delta once had quite a number of 737-200’s in service. I used to love watching those clamshell reversers in action. Options are limited now for fans of the mighty JT8D. DC-9’s are gone from first-world airline fleets and MD-80’s are on the way out.
It may have been a stubby guppy, but the 737-200 was a joy to fly! It flew like an airplane, (not a truck, like the 737-300), and those P&W JT8D engines were pretty much indestructible! I remember getting my type ride in an old Continental 737-100 model. We're sitting at the gate, after midnight in OK City and someone asks, 'Who is going to push us back from the gate?' The reply from the observer/check airman was, 'Oh, nobody, we'll just power back.' No problem, those were the days...
Surprised an airline is still using the 200 series 37!! Old school! I remember flying one from Gainesville to Greensboro back in the very early 90s when Piedmont still flew!
What's the Airline which is still operating this classical aircraft? I thought that this aircraft is no longer operated and all of them are scraped.....
A little help here please... It seems to me that watching these older planes redirecting the thrust by moving a Cowell in to place to slow to stop the plane have less wear and tear on the new engines that are traveling at great speeds only to reverse the trust internally like example throwing car in reverse (just a laymens thoughts of how it has to reverse thrust instead of redirection there for much more maintainance required
2:19
THAT right there is the noise I love so much from those old JT8Ds. Such a sweet melodic down spooling. *BEAUTIFUL!*
You don't normally realize how fast these jets go until touchdown. Beautiful
2:24 - Best reverse thrust maneuver ever!
Best seat in the house on that old bird.
I remembered a long time ago in 1970. I was young. I rode the same seat there. I watched when it arrived. I never saw that for the first time in my life. It Sounds so LOUD! Great video! Thumbs up! Cheers!
Oh how nice you had the opportunity to watch it live. I was stunned about this engines the loud and old sound is awesome
Once, I was seated next to a first-time flyer in that exact row, she had the window. She told me she was VERY worried, so I said I would explain every noise and everything happening on the wing, and reassure her that it was all completely normal.

Lol..the first time I sat on that seat and saw the reverse trust opening i got scared ..thinking it was falling apart..hahaha..some 30 years ago ...

even on a meadow. One reason that some of them are still flying, for instance in Canada ( Nolinor Aviation ).
safer than the 737 Max lol
Might be the noisiest seat but the nicest view of the plane mecanic
I remember flying a 200 series on MetroJet back in the day. Good times.

Yeah. I've seen that done before. Using the engines and the reverse thrusters to back away from the building.
That's my favorite model of the 737. I remember riding in one flying out of Denver Stapleton Airport when I was a kid. Good times!
OH MAN, that was my first experience on a FRONTIER AIRLINES 737-100 out of DEN Stapleton. My Father Robert Estey worked for Frontier both 60's and 70's.
These were the first engines I started to build during my apprenticeship back in 2000. Still great to see them operating✈️👌🏻🤓
Either you have a super steady hand or your camera was attached to a tripod that was fastened to something solid. Great footage!!!
Everything belonging to 70s is stunning! the aircrafts, the home decoration, the style of life, everything! I wish that the time return back to the 70s!
I always love the beautiful sound those old P&W JT-8D turbojet engines made!
I flew Piedmont Airlines in 1982. First time I ever got in a plane. LaGuardia, New York to Asheville, North Carolina. I remember watching the clamshell thrust reverser/ speed brake deploy. Great memory.

-thx for the trip.
No better sounding jet engine than the old JT-8s.
Just like landing in Sacramento when I flew on Air California 737s on their 25 minute flights between San Jose and Sacramento back in the 1970s.
:)

I love how on modern planes, the wing is always bending, but here, it's completely straight.

Miss the old cigar engines & clamshell buckets. What great sound they make.
Always my favourite seat on a -200 and the well-known reverser bucket clang 😎
My goodness, such a calm approach, hardly a twitch from roll equipment.Loveely touchdown, and, those reverse thrusters, magic!
Excellent! I miss seeing those -200's. And the noise.
I love how the piece of engine pylon fairing is attached to one of the clamshells -- comes along for the ride!
That landing was BUTTER
I love classic planes than today❤️
I’ve overhauled a ton of parts for these over the last couple years. Surprisingly there are some old workhorses out there.
Use to love boarding in Butte years ago. Down from the outdoor balcony, across the tarmac, & up the stair truck into the 737-200, with less then 30 people on board.
Ahh...the old "clam shell" reverser. Work on those in the late 70's.
Almost cried watching this. Awesome. Miss the -200
HA! Best seat in the house, next to the cockpit itself. I've always loved watching the wings do their thing, but the added bonus is the thrust reverse on older aircraft like that 737.
I love the high pitched whine of the JT-8!
I love this aircraft with this engines!!!!! Old School baby!
Ahh! Cool vacuum cleaner style old sound!
More of a drag brake than a thrust reverser...Nice calm air on the approach...
When I was a kid remember the first time seeing this, and I was like wtf!! I thought the engine was falling apart! Lol 😝
Too cool, I am really impressed with that how aerodynamic works
No gonna talk about that butter landing
These old birds had character... even if they were noisy as hell :)
737-200 first ever airplane I went on when I was a child and in the rear seats. Wow it made some noise on take off and landing. Felt and sounded like an earthquake. Beautiful airplane!
Love the low bypass engine
Wow! That's a sight I have not seen in 30-years! From there, it was the CFM6 engines with no where near the thrust reverse excitement.
No FMC to program, no waiting for the IRS to stand up. Just start up and go. Hand flying the 200 is a dream. Very little pitch change with thrust. Flys like a Piper warrior and just as easy to land. Boeing should have retired the design long before the 800 and definitely before the Max.
That was a really nice smooth landing
I think the DC-9’s had a similar engine with similar thrust reverser
Wow that pilot did a great job flew that in smooth and made a really smooth landing to top it off
Ah the memories. The best part about the plane is you can gather up your money and hop off the back stairs!
Cool bit of kit older planes better than new ones
That’s cool to watch. I’ve always wondered all the different high pitched sounds.
737-200 flights on Western, Delta, America West, Southwest many times thru the 80's/90's for me.
it remind me of old days , no 200 flying in india , smooth touchdown
Lovely footage. BTW, I thought the logo light on the wingtip was an exclusive design feature that started with the B737-300 and newer aircraft. One never goes to bed without learning something new.
Great airplane. Rode it many times back in the day. Considering all the issues Boeing is dealing with the Max and NG series 737's they should go back to the 200's.
One of the best section to seat when in a plane.
Takes me back to 1997. Going to Colorado with my best bud to vacation @ Durango & Silverton + some other railroads. I always sat over or just behind the left wing.
Thats musi in my ears. Live to fy the B737-100 and 737-200 in X-Plane. All time my favourite plane-nothing to compare with the Plasticbusses

A nice piece of museum still flying....amazing!!!

Anyway, it was a great experience. First of many flights on the 737s.
When I saw the thumbnail I got scared that it is falling apart xd
I can’t believe your steady hand while landing man. Priceless! 👌🏼
Very nice touchdown...thankyou for this video
This guy got airplane WiFi. He must be Rich Rich 😂
Very Good pilot, perfect flight & landing
Good old clamshell reverse thrusters Boeing 727 Boeing 737, now that's flying!
Val-d’Or is actually where I live. I was looking for thrust reverser videos, and i got recommended this video. I’m guessing this is a Nolinor Aviation 737? I think they’re the only 737’s landing here in Val-D’or.
That’s right!

Oh man, that brings back memories.
How did you get such stable footage? Tripod of some kind? Whatever it was, great video!
It may have been a stubby guppy, but the 737-200 was a joy to fly! It flew like an airplane, (not a truck, like the 737-300), and those P&W JT8D engines were pretty much indestructible! I've always liked working on those clam shells
Que bello diseño de ingieneria y garan habilidad de los pilotos👍👍
Thats a smooth butter
Washed and buffed a few of those JT8D’s back in the day lol
The new ge-90-114 has a faster spool rate, which is crazy considering it’s the diameter of a 737 fuselage
What's the Airline which is still operating this classical aircraft? I thought that this aircraft is no longer operated and all of them are scraped.....
Good old classic ... still going strong 👍
Landing 10/10
Excelente Pilot. Kinda surprised wing very clean I was once on an Eastern L1011 in 1990 the wing was very old and dirty.
Now THIS was the winning horse, the 737 that made the series so great. Not the BS version (i e 737 MAX)
Wow amazing, Is Boeing 737-200 still flying now?
A little help here please... 10 months later UA-cam recomends me this video
Beautiful landing Boeing should go back with the old version so they keep up with the good quality aircraft
I thought that part broke off from the thruster, wow nice landing 🛬
if it use reverse thrustuer from takingoff, can it fly backward??
