What a lot of sense Bill talks. Excellent interview and his experience in government is clearly evidenced. I do hope that the new inexperienced cabinet ministers can turn to Bill for advice and words of wisdom.

This is an excellent, insightful interview of an ex-Prime Ministry, Sir Bill, on how a coalition could work. It's such a shame he is no longer involved in NZ politics.
A small point Geoffrey, he is still involved, but in a different way - he has recently been brought in to present to National MPs on how Govt works, how to get things done, how to overcome roadblocks etc etc.
Both him and Joyce. I think it can only be a good thing.

@@61zoom61I'm still a supporter and member of the New Zealand Labour Party. Though I disagree with a lot that happened under the Labour Government of 2020, I focus more on the amount of good achieved by the Labour Party since its formation. In saying that, I'm probably extremely biased as my family have been members for nearly a century. Many of my family have also been members of parliament, most recently Adrian Rurawhe who was the Speaker of the House before Gerry Brownlee. I too hope to become an MP one day

What could have been.
Exactly! We had years of surpluses forecast, and a Prime Minister in Sir Bill English who shepherded those surpluses into being/earned the right to spend them, and was committed to actually delivering better outcomes both for people in need of support and for the whole country, for the long term.

This is it in a nutshell!! Bring him back into the fold. Luxton needs to have a trusted and experienced ear he can bounce idea's off and use to vet the books. Everyone under Luxton's first priority is job preservation - Bill's wouldn't be. Lux would get the good oil and possibly a serious alternate view.
Such a loss to the Public. One would hope that the new Government brings such practical knowledge into the tent so we get positive outcomes for all.
All yeah right National only give a damn about the center every three years they are a party by the wealthy for the wealthy and if you think they care about the rest you are dreaming.

Loved this interview. Very informative and great to see and hear Bill's fantastic advice for the new coalition government.
I was disappointed the Labour government did away with his social investment approach to solving some of our societal issues - it seemed like it was just a politics-driven decision, rather than using a tool that could deliver better outcomes for people

Not to take away from Sir Bill English, but I found Nicola Willis really impressive, in the shadow role. Always knows what she is talking about, and I can't wait to see her in action in the new coalition government.

Pity we had no one like this in government for the last six years.
bill English nailed it, less talking and more action. but we don't need another tax .we are not a communist country, so don't punish people who have worked hard and saved their pennies. we just need to be smart with money and not waste it. at the end of the day when it's all said and done you need to take responsibility for your own actions. don't blame someone else if the cookie jar is empty.

Probably the best interview I've heard for years. I dispair of how the previous government wound down the whole country to widespread inefficiency in the name of progressive ideology. Socialism has always been ineffective- when will voters learn?

Very good. Still think a lot of the house price issue is related to the mass immigration policies of the last few govts.. I'd like to see some statistical analysis of the relationship between these two things.
Yeah I would say certainly, basic supply and demand. But they want prices high since most of them own multiple houses.

Have National and ACT, along with farmers, read the book " Main Divide" they farmers in the South Island . They show how to increase value to their produce and be carbon positive.

National needs to lift the foreign buyers ban to implement tax cuts which is inflationary and keeping the cost of living higher making house prices even more unaffordable for first home buyers but Winston is oppose to that which is why Luxon didn't want to do a coalition deal.
I don't see why they need to lift the foreign buyers ban to pay for tax cuts just reduce gov spending. We get taxed to all shit on everything, they don't need that much tax. Look at the budget and see how much money they waste. Gov spending should be capped at a % of GDP.
Immunisation rates have fallen because of all the misinformation during the pandemic. Same as over here in Australia. Too many people have gone down the rabbit hole. Be interesting to see if they can lift immunisation rates and evangelicals are a big problem to carrying out the delivery
Its not only the land availability, its the cost brought about by insane regulations and an Orwellian use of power over people's will and desire to be human.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Specifically what?
Well to start with, design and plans. Not that many years ago building plans could be done by the home owner or a builder. Now you need to have the equivalent of a masters degree to get plans through the council. You need to have a LBP (architect version) before you can even submit a plan and thousands of dollars expense to the cost of the house when in the past the expense was minimal. The Government has regulated out of existence, the Kiwi DIY mentality which we where know around the world for having. The cost of council permits is astronomical. Example 10 years ago a 380sqm house permit cost $3000. Today a Kit farm shed permit cost $3500 !! thats 3 inspections only. The plans for the 380sqm house 10 years ago cost $500 for a set of CAD drawings (10 A3 pages). The farm shed had roughly 40 A3 pages and around 80 A4 pages. Thats not including the plans that are now required for a sewerage tank. Lets go there. For 100 years, kiwis had septic tanks which would do a pretty good job of filtering and biodegrading waste ..especially out on a rural setting. These tanks cost $3K ish ! Now you need a "treatment plant" Massive things with pumps and aerators. The pumps only last a couple of years at $1K each and use a good amount of power as there cycle on and off. Septic tanks don't have any pumps or power connection so no cost. The treatment plants are sized by the number of bedrooms in the house but the smallest one is for a 3 bedroom home. These things run in at $22000 minimum by the time they are installed. Cost for regulations that where not around 10 12 years ago. Remember .. the effluent field is now spread out over about 600sqm of land that stock can't graze. This treated (good enough to drink apparently .. is being distributed under ground to be environmentally friendly .. when my neibour can have 100 head of cattle in a paddock across the fence excreting waste, ar la natural by the 20 litre bucketloads full several times a day each. So you know .. the 20K additional cost for a treatment plant over a septic IS in fact a regulator cost inflicted upon people. These is getting long and I haven't even really started. I'll tell you though that this same insanity is applied across every single step in building in this country. It is why the 380sqm house was done for under $1k per sqm and would in todays regulatory market cost $5k per sqm. Do the sums. Government regulation is to blame for exorbitant building costs. @@banjopete

Sounds an awful lot like "mandates".....
We just need to educate the pros and cons of immunisations, particularly why they are a thing. By reducing the time and expense demands of basic preventable sicknesses the public system can use their resources for providing treatment for injuries, mental health and non preventable sickness. The line for a basic face to face doctor’s appt is so long that many miss out.

So 60% additional health budget has been wasted on falling immunisation rates ? What about other health initiatives eg screening programs, mental health which your government ignored after chch earthquakes, what about the fact that we are adding 100k people a year needing health services .
