- Play performed by Dave Grohl from The Benefit Concert Volume 20.
Warren Haynes Presents: The Benefit Concert Volume 20 is out on December 8th and available here: lnk.to/warrenhaynes
This video will premiere Friday Dec 1st @ 10AM EST / 4PM CET, make sure to set your reminder for the premiere.
The upcoming release of 'The Benefit Concert Volume 20' by Warren Haynes includes a spectacular highlight: the first-ever--and only to date--performance of Dave Grohl’s 23-minute instrumental epic, "Play," which extends to an extraordinary 36 minutes in its live rendition. This live performance is now available, offering fans the opportunity to witness “Play” being brought to life on that unforgettable evening.
Originally composed and performed entirely by Grohl on every instrument, “Play” is an expansive journey through Grohl's musical prowess and creativity. The video release captures the energy and intensity of “Play” as rendered by Grohl and a veritable murderers row of musical accomplices including Greg Kurstin (keys), guitarists Jason Falkner, Alain Johannes and Barrett Jones, Chris Chaney (bass) and Drew Hester (percussion). The performance's distinctiveness was further elevated by the rhythmic artistry of Abby the Spoon Lady, a prominent Asheville-based busker and advocate for street performance, whose unique spoon-playing skill brought an unexpected and captivating dimension to “Play.” Delivering a blend of visual and auditory artistry, this one and only live version of “Play” is a key highlight of 'The Benefit Concert Volume 20'.
Musicians:
Greg Kurstin - Keyboards
Jason Falkner - Guitar
Alain Johannes - Guitar
Barrett Jones - Guitar
Chris Chaney - Bass
Drew Hester - Percussion
As much as I think Dave Grohl is a brilliant frontman with the foos, I find it so fulfilling and wholesome watching him playing the drums in his later years. Its like hes back where he belongs in a way
And to think he shattered his leg
Agree..
more accomplished on drums than ever..
there is a touch of Hawkins in his drum patterns..
Amen❤
He made Nirvana what it was just as much if not more than anyone else in the band. Look at who is still here. Dave wasn't the problem in Nirvana. He was the glue. The straw that stirs the drink.
I've been hooked on Dave since the first FF album. When I found out he played every instrument that set him apart from a lot of musicians I like. Being a musician myself.
Dave is "good" if not great at everything musical. And his vision of how others would play his music is clear and appealing obviously. Unique tunings....it's formula that has remained since day one. It's his/ their sound. It's been done before and copied and nothing new but Dave is a great song writer and because he is a multi instrument player he can emulate what he hears in his head. But the production is always top notch. Not many out there in the music world to get behind a kit, sing lead, play guitar and bass the step behind the keys and kill all of it.

Like Travis Barker in Blink 182
I wanted a live version of Play so bad! Here we are, Dave and Alain are the best ❤
Alain is like the musical secret ingredient-he's just out here making stuff so much more awesome 🖤 🖤 🖤
If this is the closest I can get to Them Crooked Vultures second album, I'll take it. FRESH POTS!!!
Hahaha Fresh Pots! Well played lol.
Imagine TCV with AJ actually involved in the writing as well... it'd be immense!
I imagine Dave as a Music Professor...it is like he is teaching us a lot of the time.
This is by far the best early Christmas present this year.
Watching Dave drum is Heaven.
Especially like this.
Having Alain Johannes in your band always makes things better, tbh
Dave really is the gift that keeps on giving.
Holy crap they did this LIVE?!?!
amaziing
Yes, like in the old days when music was real. This is the kind of hard rock, prog rock that showed true talent like in the 70s, early 80s
First time played.
Alain is hands down the most “underrated” guitarist of today relative to how many people should actually know him. People that know are well aware how insanely good he is, few guys really stand out far Dereck trucks being an obvious one, Alain is on that level and has been for a long long time
Dave seems like one of those guys that can not practice but still come out and melt a kit whenever he wants
Never expected to see this done live. Just like the official video, the time just flies. No dragging on at all.
That snare sound is perfection
Kick drum ain't too shabby either
All of it is
If you would have told me Dave Grohl has an 18 minute progressive-rock opus, I would have thought you crazy. Turns out he does, and this band turns it into 36. Incredible jam!!
Progressive? This is Far from complex progressive pieces of music
@@82manginicmon man. No need to be a WANKER
@@82manginiVery prog. Need to re-evaluate your music terms. 😂
@@mikeclifford9366this is The worst Prog music ever. Poor and simple rock like foo fighters shit music
@@82manginiHow would you define progressive-rock music?
I know that a hell of a lot of work and some serious rehearsal went into making this happen. What a composition. It’s downright an orchestral score. The riffs are so Dave.
…there’s no orchestra.
Words mean things.
@@AaronAbernethy
Yes, words mean things. But Orchestral and Orchestra mean two entirely different things.
This is first semester music school shit.
@@patton303Damn, you obliterated his ass into the abyss
The only thing is,, this song is too short,, I can listen to this all day. ! So awesome !
Crazy think Grohl wrote all the parts on every instrument for this song!!!🤯🤯🤯
This man is the reason I've been playing drums for over 25 years now. I hope I can stay as passionate about music like he is down the road. Rock 'n Grohl 🤘🏽
But this man not only play drum 😅
Beautiful. Thank heavens for Dave Grohl.
Side note: The “I Should Have Known” / “Something from Nothing” melodic interlude always makes me a little teary after Taylor’s passing.
Dave is still amazing and always will be the best drummer in this world…
he wrote this song, he played all of this intruments, and guest what? now he play it live aaaaanddd without ear monitor as a drummer!! what a crazy dude!!!! \m/
Dave...whatever he does behind the kit, it's always amazing🙂
Alain man.... fkn legend.
I'm 28 and I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone actually play the spoons
Abby the spoon lady, check her out
Check out 'Spoonman' by Soundgarden
*Steve n' Seagulls* has a spoon player. They do amazing blue grass covers of rock songs. Check out Thunderstruck.
I have stopped breathing while watching, Dave is multitallented genius. I even bought bass guitar just to be able to jam with Foos. This is masterpiece of top rock. Thank you form Norway.
This has to be the best jam he's played.. They should do a full tour.
Dave Grohl aside, it's hard to go wrong with Jason Falkner and Alain Johannes on the same stage together. What a band.
Dave really does play drums beautifully. You go back and see the early videos of him at 16: his voice was already there. Now it has more vocabulary and experience.
Wow, this is awesome! Really wanted to see Dave play this song in live. Love that Chaney in the house.
This is one of the most amazing live performances I have ever heard.
Serious Pink Floyd vibes going down here, this is pure genius stuff.
Greg Kurstin's solo is nothing short of magic!
Amazing performance all around
These fellas should form a supergroup!
Who knew that behind that drum kit back in the early nineties was this absolute monster of a musician. So proud of you Dave!
What a magnificent journey. Everything about this performance is excellent. From musicians to light show. Every moment was exactly how it was supposed to be.
Thank you for the upload!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
GROHL IS AVERAGE AT BEST. STOP ALREADY. GO WATCH SONNY EMORY.
@@rctubs3593 what do you mean stop already? Is people appreciating Dave Grohl causing you distress? Have you heard the original of this song? He wrote all the parts AND recorded all instruments. A gigantic 30 minutes song. If you don’t think that’s incredible you can always go listen to Sonny Emory. And I say this with all due respect.
It’s not a competition. It’s just music.
I’m sure Sonny can appreciate how awesome this is.
How Absolutely wonderful ❤️! I love that Dave took his own 7 piece instrumental of 23 minutes and rocked it out with some Amazing musicians! It's nothing short of incredible to watch him at his Best!!! Much Aloha from Hawaii ❣️🙏🌺
the years will pass away and we wouldn't understand how magic is this job. Dave is a fucking legend.
Grohl is a beast on the drums 🤘
No words.. A masterpiece!! And Abby the spoonlady.. OMG!!!❤
Dave is a superhuman musician and a fabulous bloke , this sends chills down my spine to think he played every part and put this together himself is amazing what a talent.
Dave Grohl always plays the right thing and blends so well and always has
I listen to 'Play' all the time, such awesome riffs and instrumentation
huge play fan! and to see dave's genius come to life like this was the F*CKING sickest treat EVER!! 🤘🏻
The bloke is a living legend and deserves every credit he is given and more! A true rock star and deserves to be cast in stone somewhere for all of us to remember him.
He does not need any of that to be Himself , enjoying his musical dreams . Leave that crap for the actors and Top of the shelf Hype musicians . He is way more humble than most out there
Dave's best instrumentals outfit is so kick ass!!!
The look on Grohl's face after that finger-picked guitar solo was the embodiment of Animal from the Muppets. I don't really care what anyone has to say, Dave Grohl is on my top 5 list of the best drummers on the planet. I love this arrangement and Grohl put it all together! The dude doesn't even read music! He doesn't even know which notes he's playing, or why, which is why he's been a huge musical influence for well over 30 years. When you know what you're doing, but you don't know why, that's art. Travel light, Taylor Hawkins...we miss you!
You've said it all, except for one thing. Dave actually knows every single note he's playing. I have no doubt that when he wrote this song it was the same way, he knew exactly where he wanted each note to be
Finally a live version,thanks Dave 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Greg Kurstin going to Herbie land is my favorite! All around outstanding performance by all involved. Well orchestrated, Dr. G!
Layne Staley on spoons was awesome
Too soon bruh
He's such an amazing drummer .. I love dave❤
Also gotta recognise the presence of Barret Jones... I mean he only produced the first FF album... Played on it, helped Dave write and record the darn thing... I mean he's rockin it up there, 🤘
🤘🏼🤘🏼
I didnt know he played a such a big part in the making of the first album. I only knew that he produced the Late! Pocketwatch demos (if i remember correctly)
@@beatmeouttame if you watch the Sonic Highways, Seattle episode outtake. Whith Barret and Dave going through the old songs, there songs off the first album.
I imagine, as producer, and as his friend of a few years at that point, he had input on things, ideas ro pass on to Dave, and (even though not mentioned anywhere) there was only really those 2 on the project. So it wouldn't surprise me if Barret whacked a bass or guitar line or two on it.
Oh my god. This was magnificent! Such beauty! Did the audience know what they were in for? Dave is the man, but hail the band for playing the entire song practically flawlessly! So amazing!
How the hell can the crowd not go crazy at 2:45 😱
Wow. This is awesome. What an absolute jam!
Alain Johannes Ladies and Gents! Playing with the same guitar he used to record Euphoria Mourning! There's so much talent in this 35 min of jam!! And as many people are saying, seeing Dave on drums hits differently!
Those hi hats sizzle soooooo nice
Dave is a fucking madman for doing this live, and I love it.
Dave is amazing his punch on the drums..
Epic! I hope Dave does more instrumentals like this, what an absolute sonic joy to listen to.
Sound engineer level God!)) And Dave with that musicians so f... ig great)))
Jason Falkner shredding tastefully. Great sounding mix. Amazing performances allround. Thanks for sharing.
Bad shreddong
@@82mangini haters goona hate. Players gonna get it.
Simply brilliant. Hearing Dave on drums does the mind and soul so much good... that distinct sound only he has
I was there!!! One of THE best sets I've seen at the Christmas Jam!
Sound and lights were incredible. Plus there was a Hell of a snow storm brewing outside.
I'll never forget this night!!!
Damn I just discovered that there is a live version of this, amazing
What’s really wholesome is the fact that he’s using Taylor’s signature sticks as well..RIP Taylor and that’s the ultimate thing for me, powerful performance, very moving in fact!! Love it!!
One day we all go (get) back home.
This is pure.
My older brother was a drummer, sorry, he is still A drummer.
I've learned what lays on your shoulders by being a dtummer.
Everything.
You are the starting point and the "result" as well.
Mr. Grohl.
Thank You.
U R BOTH.
Dave Grohl is a ok drummer for rock music
@@82mangini... and a frontman, and a song-writer, and a showman, and and and....
@@rekettye01yes, he is average in ALL
Love the keys addition
ALAIN, WE LOVE YOU MAN!
Both of my kids were there! I remember when these shows first started back in the early 90’s and the cost of admission was canned food or a toy. I was supposed to play the last few songs with Warren and the power blew, twice. Just wasn’t to be and look at it now. I’m proud of Warren and also for what he’s done all of these years for Habitat.
Absolutely the best example of talent. The composition then collaboration! Just wow. Like rock should be.
Always that amazing energy when Dave plays drums!
I love instrumentals. This is a treat.
Love this song, love warren haynes and love dave grohl.... this was incredible and i shared it.
This Video was a little early Christmas present for me.
It gives me strength to live.
He paints a picture of life with his rock drums.
Dave, you're my drum god.
Dave is still a freakin beast!
amazingly so , like Chad Smith , going into their 60's
Far from The best but ok for rock music
Alain Johannes is amazing!!
Dave Grohl is just amazing!!
Shout out to him and all the musicians who did this with him too, this is just FANTASTIC!!
I always love watching Dave on the drums, he’s an animal and looks like ANIMAAAAAALLLL 😃
Long live Dave Grohl and may Kurt and Taylor and his mom be watching over him #RIP 🌹🌹
This is my “Go to” song while I run .. I get a solid 2 1/2 miles out of it
Dave 'Kill a groove (and mate) Grohl!!!
This essencial sound of the Grunge. I feel soo than good remembered this times. ❤
Every time I see Dave playing on any instrument in any band, it’s always jaw dropping. This rendition of Play with these talented musicians is beyond stellar.
Dave is a bad ass and how awesome to see Abby the Spoon Lady playing with them!
@7:45 I can’t believe that Dave talked Geddy Lee into performing this for a live audience!!!!
You know, some people were born to play the drums...
What aa blessing to see a brilliant piece of rock music finally performed live.
I want to live in the time line where Dave stayed on as Queens of the Stone Age main drummer and relegated the Foos to be a side project or passed on the good songs to Josh Homme.
I had no idea how layered the original piece was, that was a lot for one man to play plus achieving a certain level of proficiency to get it on there while doing it.
Okay, I did get the chills a few times watching this. 👍
Wow this is Art in real Amazing Rock&Roll……
Can’t imagine how long and strenuous rehearsals must’ve been lol. Wild Dave’s playing without monitors in (that I can see). So bonahm
Wow! This is such a great display of everyone's talents! Loved seeing Grohl back into his beginning elements!❤❤❤❤
Abby the spoon lady killin it
Obviously Dave Grohl needs a creative outlet that The Foos just doesn’t give him!
And we are grateful for that 🙏
MAGNUM OPUS di Dave Grohl! As the Missa Solemnis of Beethoven. I believe that Play is also a tribute to many other historic bands. I hear references to Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Faith No More, Soundgarden, and many others. This live version and the original studio version are also nicely different sometimes in a Led Zeppelin way, appreciate that.
A treat for sure! Back to classic whole side of an album.
Dave keeping it so tight! I can't recall him playing like this when he was younger
Can you believe he wrote that song on his own? Fuckin genius
Drumming and guitar parts is not complex.. only a long rock music
@@82mangini how many songs have you wrote like this?
@@aperezto there' s other bands that wrote much better songs than this, much more complex and beautifull melodys, much better riffs. This song is only long simple rock music
I love seeing that man behind the drums my God such an amazing icon and musician all the way around can play anything can sing behind the drums is no doubt comfort zone
This guy is a living legend. His talents are endless.
I needed this! During this hard time in this cruel world…. Sometimes words get in the way of music. ❤
This is so refreshing, Thanks Dave❤
Phenomenal No Quarter vibe in mid-section.
