Planetary alignment: Venus, Jupiter, Saturn in the evening sky December 2021. Nikon P1000 super zoom

  • In December 2021, three bright planets can be seen with the naked eye in the evening sky: Venus, Saturn and Jupiter. It is a beautiful planetary spectacle, especially as the planets are lined up. Fairly bright Saturn is located between very bright Jupiter and super bright Venus.
Let's see how these planets looks in the high magnification of Nikon Coolpix P1000 camera with incredible optical zoom 125x + 4x digital zoom.
On the day I was shooting this film, the weather conditions were very bad - high humidity and fog. This effectively downgraded the picture. Unfortunately, in December in Poland, ideal conditions for sky observations are rare.

I will never forget the first time I looked at Jupiter through a regular bird telescope. There it was, with it's 4 largest moon. And not only that: it's so obviously there even without the telescope. My mind just couldn't comprehend. I think it's the most humbling experience I have ever had. Then it also struck me, the reason I see Jupiter, is because the sun is shining on it, with some light reflecting towards me. >Eight Hundred Million< kilometers away from me - the sun's light is still strong enough for Jupiter to reflect parts of it so that I may see it clearly with my naked eyes. I don't even have words for that.

The first time I set up my motorized telescope, I picked a random visible object to test it out. I was entirely unprepared for it to be Saturn. I mean, I know Saturn is there and I know what it looks like but to actually see it is absolutely incredible. Highly recommend checking it out with a nice telescope. This digital zoom gets real close up, but it’s never going to be as clear as a real scope. Better still is getting a telescope mount for a DSLR but that’s another level of budget entirely.

I took my sons, 20 years ago, to a planetarium which had a 2.5 or 3 metre telescope. It was focused on the moon , which looked like it was just across the road. Truly amazing. This is fantastic seeing Venus , Jupiter and Saturn.

  • @19midnightsun87

The fact that Venus is so incredibly bright despite only showing a relatively small crescent is just mind blowing.
Yesterday, shortly after sunset as I drove from the motorway to my village through some kilometers of just fields left and right of the roads I saw Venus just majestically hanging there between the dark blue of the coming night and the fiery orange of the sunset and as I looked the other way, the moon just crept up over the treeline, fat and orange. I had to concentrate so hard not to drive off the road, haha.

The only problem with a camera like that is once you do this a couple of times, the novelty of it really wears off. Super zooming sounds good on paper, but does not have much else for practical use. Even a 70-200mm is generally more then enough for most zoom applications, outside of wildlife that is.
