- You need to move to Omaha. No joke.
Nebraska’s motto was once - Nebraska, it’s not for everyone. Technically that is true.
I’m sure a lot of the people who live here would say it’s not for everyone. Like - stay away if you have shitty political ideas, shitty dispositions, and a shitty attitude.
It was day 5 of my heartland adventure, and for the first time ever, I was arriving into Omaha. I’d be here for two whole days, which I thought might seem like FOREVER. But as I discovered, there’s a whole lotta Omaha to like. I might just say it’s maybe my next favorite city.
Omaha is a fairly big city - they’ve been flirting with a half million people here for a while now. It’s growing really fast even though it’s way out in the middle of nowhere right on the Iowa border. I had begun my trip way down here in Kansas City, and spent a couple days there. Along the way here I stopped in a BUNCH of small towns. There’s hardly any people in most of this state.
So why are people coming to Omaha?
I mean Nebraska might not seem like a very interesting place, and many of you don’t even know exactly where it is on a map. But this state has a lot going for it. It ranks as one of the best states in the country to live in when you measure things like schools, quality of life, affordability and safety. For the most part, you can go anywhere in Nebraska. Day or night.

Nick, please do a tour of affluent black neighborhoods in the US. A lot of people don't know they exist but they do, in places like Prince George County in Maryland, Atlanta, and Windsor Hills, California. It would be refreshing - for everyone, I hope - to see a majority black neighborhood that isn't poverty and crime stricken.
Well that was refreshing to see... no tents, boarded up houses, no trash blowing in the streets. Nice to see... keep it up Omaha for the future.

I live in South Omaha across from where I live are homeless shelters and even the tweakers are polite there was a tent in the entrance of a highway and the police immediately started to tear it down

Nebraska and Omaha is one of the most genuine place I’ve been in the U.S. The culture values the important things in life people, community, giving back, and caring for one another. Some call it boring but it’s simple with core values are carried with pride.
I live in Africa and I know I'll never go to the US. I'm curious about the parts which are mostly not on tv. Thanks Nick for the free road trips

I relocated to Omaha from the East Coast in November 2021. I have been surprised by the scale of the urban renewal here, and by how dynamic the city is: new parks, new riverfront in 2023, new performing arts center, refurbished historic districts, a streetcar line in 2026... There are even talks of covering part of Interstate 480, which cuts right through the city! Lots of business money supporting these projects as well: Berkshire, Union Pacific, Mutual of Omaha, Kiewit...
I heard about then putting a lid over 480! cant wait to see it.
Im from DC and I dont miss it one bit. Even my family are a bunch of uppity know it alls. Cant stand the fact that im armed. Im not welcomed there anymore. LOL and Im serious. I do wish Omahah had a subway system though. Over and under are the best train rides in the world.

Where did you get your information from on Omaha. There are black people out west and northwest. We do have homeless people here.

Omaha was such a delight to visit! It's clean, traffic is non-existent, it's safe and the best part? Everyone we met was so friendly and chatty and welcoming! Plus we got to experience great food and drink. I visited on a whim with a friend and by the end of our trip, we named it our favorite US city. Thank you, Omaha!
I'm 41 and only been to Omaha once on our family's way to the Black Hills when I was a kid back in the 90's, but I remember the place being really nice. We stopped in Omaha for some chicken.
That and Lincoln, NE. We were there during a invasion of locusts.

Is traffic non existent a relative statement? I’m coming from California the LA/San Diego I5 hectic bumper to bumper traffic all day everyday. This traffic drives me crazy can’t wait to get out of it.

Let me tell you. Im from SC born and raised and i came to Omaha because of military back in 2018 and i love this place. Currently stay in Papillion and i love it! Never thought id ever say that but i do! People are way more friendly than the south, foods great, and its just a vibe. Glad to call Omaha/Papillion my second home. GBR!!!

I'm from Omaha. This was a pretty accurate review. I think we do take the safety and security for granted. The young people always wanna move because we think it's boring but also almost everyone I know who leaves for a big place moved back
I think many move because of the perceived boredom, but end up doing the same things in their new city as they did in Omaha, except the cost of living is higher and its less safe, which is why so many move back.
As soon as those people have familys priorities change. Crime, schools, cost of living become tops in the list for wgat they look for

Yeah I moved away. Got older, ready to have a family. Houses are 1/2 the cost back in Omaha. Guess I will be moving back.
I've always thought of Nebraska as the American dream. I like midwestern culture as they tend to keep ahold of traditional values like building families and having good worth ethic.
You probably won’t make it but end of July in Burwell, up north, they hold Nebraska’s Big Rodeo. If you enjoy the midwestern ideals Burwell is definitely that.

I have family that lives in the Omaha area. For a good-sized city, it is pretty nice. Medical services are very good there, too. The biggest downer for Omaha and Nebraska is, surprisingly, high taxes. Property and income taxes are pretty high. Aside from that, Nebraska is a great place, as is neighboring Kansas--some of the best people to be found anywhere. By the way, "Aksarben" is Nebraska spelled backwards.

@@KuromixLara lol that's not true at all. Florida low taxes, Texas low taxes, Utah low taxes, Idaho, washington etc all low tax burden states where everyone is moving. Meanwhile California, new York, Hawaii, Illinois etc all have high taxes and the middle class is leaving.

@@aaronkamakaze2967 California voters forced a referendum in the 1970s to lower property taxes. That underfunded already underfunded public schools and put them on a path to where they're at.
I moved to Omaha from Minneapolis. Omaha is a nicer city. I noticed the friendliness of the people right away. The only thing I miss are the winter sports and the lakes. Oh well.

I grew up an hour north of Omaha in a really small town and the rest of the state thinks Omaha is a bunch of snooty assholes. I think Omaha has their fair share but generally good Midwestern people.

I am just the opposite. I couldn't wait to get out of there. No big trees, no clear running streams, no mountains, nowhere to hike for miles and miles without seeing other people. I moved back for a few years and had several bad experiences. Stolen car, fights in a restaurant over nothing, high taxes compared to where I had lived before, and a few other stories I won't go into. The day Omaha was in my rearview mirror was a good day. Glad you're happy there. You must live in West Omaha.

I know I'm a Nebraska and very biased. But, like you I've been all over the country and it truly is an amazing place, and amazing people.

Omaha and Nebraska as a whole is one of the best states in the nation! People just know I-80 and the flat corn fields.

Omaha is cool I was born and raised in Lincoln lived in Nebraska for 21 years but I decided to move to Charlotte North Carolina but I do plan to one day move back and live in Omaha I’m just waiting for the city to grow its entertainment
I'm from Florida and my wife is from Oregon. We met in 1988 when I was in the Air Force and she had just graduated from Creighton nursing school and worked at UNMC. We now live in Papillion. This is a good place to live and raise a family. Big enough for shopping, entertainment, but doesn't have the problems of a big city. For a good time, come here during the College World Series.

I was in Omaha the other month for the Berkshire AGM. I was positively surprised how lively the city is. You have nice areas with cool bars and lots of young people in downtown. And looking at the housing prices compared to my country (Germany) it is absolutely reasonable. If you live in a economic successful area such as Munich, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, you pay around 1 million dollars for just a 4 room apartment. In Omaha you get quite a lot more for your money.

Wow! This was an INCREDIBLE profile of Omaha. It's amazing that you put together such an accurate and thorough report after only a 2 day stay. I've lived here my whole life (age 31). I definitely realize how fortunate I am to live here. I was the same as the woman you interviewed in high school- couldn't wait to get out of here. But as I became an adult, I started to love Omaha. Every year I love it more. It's almost sad to hear that you think Omaha is in its perfect stage of growth right now because that makes me feel like it's just going to get more problematic from here.

I moved out of Omaha when I was 25 and 20 years later came back and lived for a few years. I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there both times. If all you like to do is work and go out to eat it's a good place. Great restaurants
Great video! I have traveled extensively for work over the last 20 years and will say that Omaha truly is my favorite city after New Orleans (omg the food!!). Have lived here for 16 years and one thing you didn’t mention is the restaurant and food scene here are amazing for a relatively small town. That being said, both of my oldest have moved away to big cities in the last year (1 moved back already😂)
Here is one area that people forget, Omaha and Nebraska in general invests plenty in education, and is one of the top states with good education. Nebraska, along with Iowa and other neighboring northern midwestern states, have among the highest general IQ, compared to the South, except Texas.
Omaha has a crime program called Omaha360, which has been effective in reducing crime and other cities are looking at Omaha for inspiration, including Kansas City.
Mayor Jean Stothert has vowed to increase the wages and salary of police officers, so that they do a better job and get the respect they deserve to do their jobs.
As long as Nebraska and Iowa, keep their familial values high, invest in education, support their law enforcement. We won't have crime.
Also, we are entering in a period of correction across the country, many people have seen how poorly some places are being run and why; and which places have been doing a good job running their cities and states.
P.S. I can't wait for the full Riverfront to open on Aug 18 of this year, it will be nice to have Heartland of America and Lewis and Clark Landing open, along with the Gene Leahy Mall.
I moved to Omaha 7 years ago. My company is one of the tech boom... or as we call it corporate welfare. Nebraska made a deal with companies to come in and build their business here tax-free for the next 10 plus years depending on how the agreement is. My company's coming to the end of our text free agreement and we are now downgrading and selling our building. There will be layoffs soon and I will move on with my family to the next state or wherever my job takes me. When I moved here, a lot of people tells me that I'm crazy to move into the state while they are looking to move out. Then again most of the people I interact with are in their 20s and 30s who said that. When I move out next year in the spring or summer. Omaha will have a special place in my heart. Will I move back? no but I will visit when I passed through. Thanks for doing an episode on Omaha.
Just moved away from Omaha to phoenix after living there for 6 years. I miss it a lot and it’s such a great city. I’m so glad to see people finally appreciating the city and how amazing it is. Thanks for showing people how great this city really is.

@@obriantomlinson2776Hi! My son is an active duty Air Force flyer so I visit often. I’m a retired Air Force NCO. I love it in Omaha, in fact I’m moving from Texas to Omaha this spring. The Air Force base (Offut AFB) has everything one would need and the VA hospital and care are said to be exceptional. Hope that helps!

I live in Omaha, it gets hot in the summer but gets cold in the winter lol. We have every season and it’s pretty nice.
Omaha is my dream city. As a foreigner, who has never been in U.S but knowing American culture - humbly (Phd in American Studies) I'd say Middle East is something special. Interesting fact. Up until the 1980s South Omaha was largely a Czech and Polish enclave. The packing houses encouraged large scale emigration. Czechs and Poles, blacks from the South, and then Hispanics. They were always looking for relatively cheap labor, but they also encouraged the displacement of people.
There have been movements to once again unionize the packing houses. Some companies do not treat their workers well. Some of the racial tensions in Omaha have links to the packing industry and how they treated people.
Meth use and drug abuse do exist in Omaha, Lincoln, and many small towns.
Still, Omaha has many wonderful people from all over the world! However, I miss the days when Lincoln was a sleepy college and railroad town. I grew up in Lincoln. My dad’s parents came from Czechoslovakia to South Omaha around 1900, and he grew up in South Omaha.

@@jgrysiak6566 the Eastern Europeans have been pretty well dispersed. There are small Eastern European enclaves remaining in the state.
Crete, Nebraska had a sizable Czech-American community. More diverse now. Wilber, Nebraska still has a sizable Czech-American community. Prague, Clarkson, and Verdigre all have Czech-American communities.
Omaha is pretty diverse and cosmopolitan nowadays. Check it out!

Thankfully it’s only about 4 1/2 to 5 hours drive from my area of southeast Iowa! You definitely covered the city thoroughly! That’s th “Midwest” that I know and love! Here in Wichita, $1,200 will get you a fancy downtown loft or a nice three bedroom apartment. Studios are still $400 here in Wichita, one bedrooms $500-$700. Then again, why would anyone want to live here to begin with.

I can’t find the link, but Omaha has one of the best commute times for its size, something like ~20 minutes anywhere in the city.
I live outside of the US and grew up as a kid with a certain romantic image of it in my head. Reality over the years growing up, even with east coast visits, has unfortunately been a rude awakening but parts of Omaha do look a lot like I once imagined the USA as a whole would be.
It does give some hope then.

Hey brother, awesome video. Its great to see people give a spotlight to this city. I've been here for about 4 years now, here for school, and I work at the base just south of Omaha in Bellvue. I came from St. Louis and I can tell you that the crime here is almost non-existent compared to St. Louis. It is still there but in STL I would never walk around downtown at 3 in the morning alone and I'd be worried about where I parked my car. In Omaha(I go downtown a lot and stay out till 3 consistently) the worst I've witnessed is a small fight between 2 people and about 3 cop cars were on it under 30 seconds because a ton of cops hang out downtown. I love Omaha and this is where I intend to stay and start a family.

I was born in Papillion. I've lived in Omaha most of my life. Fun fact, Bellevue is the oldest city in Nebraska. The waterway park is amazing. The Storm Chasers used to be right next to the Henry Doorley Zoo, then the zoo bought the property and they tore down the stadium. They actually have some of the old posts up in the parking lot. Worth checking out if you come back.

Thanks Nick for a great report. I've said for a long time that Omaha was one of the best-kept secrets in the country. I was born there and lived there til around age 11, when we had to move to a warmer climate for my dad's health (ended up in Hemet). Omaha has come lightyears since my childhood, when it was mostly a big cow town. Amazed at what it has become and understand the concern among locals that all the growth could start to attract the wrong element. Hopefully not, fingers crossed.

I've stayed in Omaha for 40 years before relocating to another state. This place has a lot of gems to to discover. My former pastor and I we're very effective in what is labeled "The Hood," in North Omaha. No matter how Omaha is viewed, you can yet raise a family in Omaha, enjoy family events, receive the proper education for your children, etc... Knowing a mass part of it's history, Omaha is one of the best places to reside.
Nick, you're a funny dude. I loved your review of Omaha, seemed like you did your homework. As a long time, Nebraskan and Omaha resident, I do share many of your views on the city. I think this city really benefits from having a cold season, it seems to keep the homeless off the streets, that and the police won't tolerate it. Hopefully the city government learns from the mess in California and adjusts laws and services to keep the city in the great condition it is in for a long time to come. Thanks for the video!!

I found this fascinating! Due to difficult circumstances I had to move away from Omaha 20 years ago, I miss it, and when you were driving around downtown I didn't even recognize it! My it looks like it has changed for the better! By the way when you cross over the Missouri River from Iowa, it has a sign, Nebraska, the good life!

If you ever come back, here are some recommendations for unique things to do (some of which you will likely think are incredibly weird):
x Alpine Inn - Go at night so you can eat at the same time as the raccoons, it is a wilderness restaurant.
x Squirrel Cage Jail - In Council Bluffs, some used to think it was haunted.
x Hummel Park - Scary Park with a lot of legends about it (don't go at night)
x Vala's Pumpkin Patch - Near Gretna, it is an entire Halloween theme park, it is THE BOMB.
Vala's Pumpkin Patch is like being in heaven during the fall....
I once bought a season pass and went there probably 15 times during their two-month season!
Moved out of Omaha when I was 25. Went back 20 years later because my parents needed somebody to take care of them. It was horrible, and I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there and did as soon as possible.

What a great video Nick.I absolutely enjoyed your documentary about life in the Midwest, too bad Illinois couldn't have stayed as Midwestern &innocent as it was, while I was growing up. I’m in Iowa, about an hour from Omaha. You did a nice job depicting what the city is like. And though you only briefly touched on Council Bluffs, you’re right about that, too. Folks around here call it Counciltucky…

Nick Johnson, you should check out the pan handle of Nebraska. Scottsbluff, Chadron, and Crawford areas are some of the most scenic parts of the state. Toadstool park, Scottsbluff National Monument where Oregon trails is and Fort Robinson near Crawford.

Have lived in Omaha for over 10 years. Moved from Phoenix and don’t regret at all. For a mid-sized city Omaha has great restaurants, music scene, and college sports (Creighton, UNO). Where we’re at (Aksarben/Elmwood Park) it feels kind of like a big small town.
My company's headquarters is in Omaha. I was sent there for a week last month. I was pretty impressed. I didn't think I'd like Omaha, but I did. I don't think I'd ever move there because this East Coast girl needs her beaches, but I enjoyed my visit and am looking forward to going back.

Thank you for the good review! I was born and raised here, but moved away and came back every time. We are more than steak and corn… The people that say we are just a flyover state are a bit ignorant. Yes we have one of the best zoos and Warren Buffet is a very nice and approachable guy! I’m a born and bread Nebraskan who lived other places and this is the place that I will and be here forever!!!

Well, I've been to Omaha a few times and you made it sound more exciting - never thought I'd watch a video about Omaha in a thousand million years so props to you. You're a helluva lot more interesting to listen to than the 'Oracle of Omaha,' Warren Buffet. I think Omaha WAS more interesting and cooler because you were there. As someone who just moved here (from south western Virginia) this city is actually really nice. I've been told by people who have lived here that "there's nothing to do here" but there's loads to do honestly. I'm comi g from a place where you'd have an hour drive before you got to a movie theater with more than 10 screens. Really I like it here a lot

Aussie Here. First thing that comes to mind when I think of Omaha is its Hospital. The University of Nebraska Medical Centre is internationally known.
Also at 11:15 I see PALMS !? Surely Omaha is too cold for palms and those are in pots, but I don't see pots?

@@NickJohnson They were either side of the entrance to the house. Anyway, they were probably outdoor Summer only palms and live inside during the winter.
What a great review... I took a look on Zillow and quickly realized Property Taxes look kinda high... 500K home is taxed at 8K a year. My big find in a great place to live is Grand Junction CO.... growing University town, low taxes, 4 seasons, vinyards, snow skiing, national monument and BLM public land for hiking and off roading...plus two rivers merge right in town...with float trips and fishing.... its really a cool place... home prices have nearly doubled in the last 10 years...but still affordable.

I love states like Nebraska because I forget they exist for a while then I see something like this and I'm so excited because it's like discovering a new state.
Aksarben used to be a fairground and horse track (Nebraska spelled backwards). Grew up in Bellevue in the 70's. Such a great place. South Dakota had a track called Adokad.
I grew up in Omaha and Council Bluffs from the late 90s and 2000s back when we had a Buckys and a drive in Theatre that Google bought
I love living in Bellevue, what I hate is the cold weather...lol..
