Building a MASTERPIECE For MY Wife

- This table is worth $6000 or more, but I'm giving it to my family. Is a glass river table better than epoxy? I'll show you how to build this live edge river dining table with glass inlay for my wife. I could sell this table easily for $6000, but I'm keeping this one. I made this dining table out of two cottonwood live edge slabs with a blue tinted glass inlay and a welded steel mid century modern style table base. I built this live edge glass river dining table for my wife to have in our formal dining room. This live edge glass river dining table was built over the course of 8 months.

I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.
This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.
I’ve never seen your videos or work before, but after watching, it’s no wonder you are sponsored by Home Depot. You, sir are a master of both metal and wood. Truly beautiful craftsmanship. Can’t wait to check out more of your vids. Subscribed.
Thank you 🙏
Stunningly beautiful....natural yet contemporary. A modern, timeless classic to come.
Love the table! Love the wenge bow ties. Everytime I go pick up lumber I always tend to grab a couple of those imports that just are great accent pieces like that!
I’m just dreading when foods and drink falls into that crack.
Wow, what a project! Love the base especially. Wouldn’t have ever thought of using cottonwood. Well done.
Beautiful table built with great love and hardwork
Awesome table, totally worth all the hours! and her reaction made it worth every second of it for you i am sure
The fist video of yours I’ve watched was the one where you made your wife the cheese board. Thought I was super sweet and turned out beautiful. Say this video next and love these kinds io in depth videos for this type of table. Then I freaked out when you mentioned OKC, because that’s where I live too. I love finding and supporting UA-camrs from Oklahoma. Keep up the good work!!
What a great job you have done! I love the complete imagination about it. Very, very nice. And the bow ties, I learnt something here!
Awesome table, love the kind of wood you picked, and also the special unique designs or patterns, makes it a personal touch, keep doing what you do and God Bless You and Your Family
There is no god.
Wow ! Love this! The work, craftsmanship, artistry, the knowledge n skill that goes into this table is just, WOW!
Your wife gets her own dining table? Thats a brillant idea. Now she dosent disturb you and the kids while she is in the cellar.
Nice! I've built both epoxy and glass river tables. Both had their challenges but turned out great and I learned a LOT. I need to try Odie's finish. I've used Rubio Moncoat and Osmo's oil as well. Possibilities are endless aren't they?
Awesome table. I really like how the glass looks, gives it a totally different look compared to resin.
Chatoyce
Beautiful job!
Saw the bark on the slabs and immediately went wait is someone finally using cottonwood?! Awesome I use that all the time as it is real common where I am in Montana. If you are looking at more of it be careful for thickness of the bark. The thicker it is the more "wind checked" the wood is. This causes a bunch of micro cracking weakening the wood and normally for how fast they grow that is why they come down within about 30ish years
Great info, thanks!
Epic games sponcerd this
That's good info. Thanks
Chatoyance. Beautiful table and beautifully done. You should be really proud of yourself, considering what a ghastly year it has been. I love the bow ties and honestly, if people have an issue with it then they are watching the wrong channel. I hope you have many, many happy family meals around that gorgeous table. x
Turned out so good !!! Your right that cotton wood looks epic. Thanks for making my decision easy. Keep crushing it
I’ve never seen a River Table made with glass for the river accent. Always Epoxy of some sort. It looks really good.
The glass ones are beautiful. Look up Greg Klassen, he is the originator of the 'River Table' and his are all made with glass.
Great, professional and well done job my friend, it’s not just a dining table it’s a peace of art..
Okay....this table is absolutely gorgeous!!! It is fit for a very fine home. I am also very pleasantly amazed with the many skills that this artisan has, including his excellent use of the English language - in describing the details of his work. Wonderful job!!
The most beautiful thing is to see you present your wife with the work of your hands! 💙
Wow man that is a beautiful piece, thank you for sharing. Awesome job and something to be proud of for many many years. Keep on building
it is incredible how much you love your wife, hope all husbands like you
Table is gorgeous, really love the look and color of the wood. Great job, you should be proud.
What a cool mixture of materials with the resin, wood, metal and glass. Another stunner from your shop, Jonny. Thank you!
Thanks y’all!!!
As always, loved the process, didn't expect the entire process was 8 months in the making. The finished table especially the stands/legs of the table is beautifully crafted.
Thanks for the great video. Beautiful table, and I appreciate the description of using Obie’s oil and the router templates.
Chatoyance!
I feel like Stan Lee when he uses his catchphrase, “Excelsior!”
I would like to see this with a plate bridging the gap underneath and then the gap filled with varnished river stones under the glass. I'm not sure about seeng the
metal support through the glass. But what an enjoyable video with the process of the glass cutting and bow tie fitting. Quite a stunning table.
I’d also be paranoid nervous about breaking that flimsy piece of glass.
@@mikemcdonald4813 The glass would be tempered I guess. Another thought would be again a plate underneath then a ribbon of LED lights and then a layer of the broken glass you'd get from a car windscreen. It could look all sparkly and undulating if the light had some movement with it. Wish I had a workshop, I'm so jealous of this man.
That glass tho...i hope it doesn't break in the future. The base looks good and the finish of the wood is nice
Awesome table. Your wife showed be happy for years to come.
This is so creative and well executed. Absolutely LOVE it!! Well worth the 8 month wait for your wife :)
Just thinking about how durable that glass is. Hope the thickness is enough to suppott an accidental or intentional placement of a pot full of food on it or an utensil drop 😅
@@deanvanluven6813 and I'm sure I'm alowed to wonder
Plus were he put the bow ties why leave it with the gap in it ? And at the ends of the table nothing underneath the glass it looks unfinished..hope they soften up the edges cause it will leave it sharp edge and could cut someone
@BoldservantofJesustheChrist if you weren't sure, Jesus never existed. He's made up.
@BoldservantofJesustheChrist then*
@@anonymouscommenter7689 he is made up. Just like Greek mythology.
I built my first computer desk for my daughter with 2 x 6’s but ordered the legs online. Pretty much the first thing I’ve built from scratch with wood it looks great and better still my daughter had tears when I took it down to her room and installed it. That was worth it’s weight in gold, now I see her using it everyday to draw on and do her school work for college. Nothing makes me happier than to see her using it everyday 👍👍👍 awesome table build and I agree 2020 was a stinker and 2021 wasn’t much better here’s a toast to 2022 being a good recovery for everyone!!!!!
chatoyance! brilliant idea and its awesome having meals on your own creation. I do it as well. Great video.
Love the table. Absolutely amazing. Quick question, why didn't you want to fill in the long crack with epoxy and bow ties?? just curious.
That cotton wood looks really good! Next on my wish list: welding-skills and tools!
Your choice of color for the glass is perfect. It looks like flowing water. All good wishes!
It's a beautiful table! Great project, nice shop! I would have made the table with separate supports for each slab that are linked laterally mid-height underneath, so that no part of the bottom support would be visible under the slabs and the glass. Also, does Glazing Concept bend glass 90 degrees? I think the table would look more finished if the two ends of the glass were bent 90 degrees down to the thickness of the slabs. Hence, the corner edges would have to be rounded to conform with the small radius of the bent glass, instead of chamfering.
Yes I agree with you to would look better but also it would look better if he used epoxy
Terrific! Sometimes I feel like the epoxy is a little “too much” for certain spaces. This is a great medium with a similar, maybe even more sophisticated look. Great job, great video.
Absolutely
Completely awesome. I aspire to make a memorable “legacy table” at our new house, but I do not have your skillz. I will look for projects that allow me to use the space and tools I have to make a memorable table. Thank you for inspiration!
Superb Job,,😊👍👌
Very nice table. Love your idea. Next video i want you try to make a table with epoxy. Respect!
I just watched that from start to finish! I’m a fan of using the cottonwood slabs, because most people just consider that a “trash tree.” You were able to prove that the build quality has more to do with the treatment of the material, than simply using the most expensive wood. Then multiple materials were combined (soft wood, hard wood, glass, and metal) in such a cohesive design. Amazing work!
I've looked at Cottonwood before, but I've always steered away because it's so soft. I went with epoxy over the custom glass, ~$140 for epoxy, my quote here in Ohio was $550 for a similar blue glass cut on a CNC.
CHATOYANCE. I was expecting a resin poured river table, but, this is much more beautiful and unique. Thank you.
Really handsome table and base…love the glass detail opposed to a river flow epoxy finish….Well done…be safe…
Learned a new term today: Chatoyance. ;-) The legs in steel are nice riff on the Japanese designer you were emulating. A beautiful job, but your wife's approval is the only one that truly matters.
Looks cool.... And I not really a fan of light wood finishes.
I really like the bowties, give it a really nice effect.
Great job 👍👍
An absolutely beautiful piece of art. Bon appetite with a healthy helping of happy memories.
Jonny, amazing craftsmanship bro! Bloody attention to detail is outstanding.
Jonny, that table turned out beautiful man. I love what you were able to do with it. Cottonwood is such an underrated species. The smell is horrible when working with it, but the final product turns out great. That base was awesome too, so cool. I will say though, your videos always give us a peek into your life and I love that it felt like we got to be a part of the ride giving your wife the table. Love feeling like we went on the journey with you. Your videos and voiceover stories just keep getting better. Can't wait to see the next project.
Thanks brother 🙏.
No boo jjj
What a fantastic piece of work, unbelievable what you can make with reclaimed wood. Keep up the amazing work. Chris from the UK 🇬🇧
Love the table and a lot less messy than using a full epoxy centre. Well done 👍
Absolutely beautiful build Jonny! I'm a big fan of the glass river tables vs. the epoxy (personal preference) and this definitely delivered, especially with the wider part at the one end...that made it feel even more organic! And of course...Chatoyance...definitely had to pause to get the spelling right on that one haha
Thanks bud!

Omg, I haven't seen or heard mention of the Husky for years! Woah that brings back nostalgic memories of when I used to live right next to the Husky like 6 years ago
Really like the light blue glass insert. That you have made the 'feet' yourself - fantastic
Chatoyance. That is a beautiful table. I really like the wenge wood bow ties , I recently just got a new pool cue made out of from wenge.
Man you just told your story, the same way I want to tell mine. You definitely inspired me. Thank You for sharing your story. I hope I can sit in front of you one of these days and tell you Thank You! GodBless man!
I have a similar table. Picked glass because it's much more scratch resistant.
Fantastic work, Jonny! Beautiful table! 😃
And you know what they say... Happier wife, happier husband. 😉
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I'm new to your channel, but am very impressed with your skills in wood as well as metal. That table frame looks really good! I wish I had your talent. By the way congrats on having 3 shops - I have one and can't afford to keep it open...oh well you'll have to share your secrets with me sometime. Great video Jonny and congrats on the work of art. chatoyance.
WOW!!! What a process. You are a master at what you do. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This table is SO DOPE! Excellent work, Jonny!
Thanks 🙏
Looks amazing. I don’t know why but I thought you were going to do an epoxy table when I started watching. I was pleasantly surprised. Nice work.👍
Great project. You have a lot more courage than me in tackling such a project. Well done.
I have a suggestion for all you guys working with these large slabs of wood. How about a small crane added to the ceiling in your garage or workshop???
The chatoyance in that table is magnificent!
Beautiful table, love it. Love your dachshunds even more!!
You need to invest in a jack plane and a joiner plane. They are bigger than the block plane and the blade is angled for working along the grain. A block plane is designed for easy working on end grain. The joiner plane is a long thing that makes it much easier to make wood very straight
Brilliant project and great attention to detail. Great end project although I'm not a fan of glass tops because of the noise they makes. Thank you so much for sharing.
Jonny, perfect. The video story really added to the charm of your masterpiece.
🙏
Super sweet table mate! Love the mix of metal working, woodworking and glass. I was thinking you were going to epoxy the river, and couldn't work out why you were getting the glass cut, but I think the end result looks tops!
Chatoyance! I learned something new today that resin is not the only way to do river table design. Great job!
Great looking table. Happy wife, happy life!!
Beautiful table and base. Have you thought about how difficult it might be to get food out from between the edges of the glass and the table. Might want to seal up the gap with something.
Nice work! Love the Chatoyance in the cottonwood. Only thing I would change is have keyed in offcuts under the ends of the glass to support them a bit more, Overkill probably, but I'm like that...
That table is awesome! Chatoyance is now my new favorite word. Good luck in your endeavors. We’re all right here with you.
Your video-making skills are equal to your craftsman skills. Excellent!
Sir i admire how you build a table & funiture, hope someday i make also a furniture like what you did, thanks & more power to your channel/vlog…God Bless…
This is super dope. If it had a little darker finish it would fit perfectly in my dining room.
Great work! I’ve seen so many videos with epoxy rivers. I was a bit thrown by the glass but the end result is amazing. Chatoyance!
Love the table, the base, the inlays are stunning. But I really don't like the glass. I feel that if you used the same wood for the middle as you used for the inlays it would be nicer. But overall amazing work.
Or tinted black glass.
Second that.
P
Long time no see, probably busy with the new house, hope it all is to your satisfaction.
Good to see you again, thanks for sharing the video.
🙏🙏
Another great build, and oh jeez how I love your fur babies 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍
Chatoyance! That’s some skill you’ve got there fella! Love it.
Wow! It came out so beautiful! Those bow ties! So good!
Ok the bow ties is way to much of different color..but it still leaves a crack that's not filled plus at the ends of the table the glass just sits in a groove looks like it's little below the surface plus the ends the glass may be to sharp might cut someone if not tapered some
Lovely table. Some furniture finishers add a bit of matching paint to the clear sealer to avoid that cloudy look. Next time you might try iy
Nice job on the table bro! You’re excellent! I actually thought that you were going to have glass cut that would look like a pretty blue river flowing down a stream. 👍🏾
I just learned what chatoyance means!!! Great build Johnny!!! Cottonwood really is a nice wood to build with.
This is a very good TV show and we love it !
Lovely filming and editing on this. It never felt rushed. Great result and a credit to you. New sub on this. 👌
🙏🙏
That's a beautiful table. Lots of work went into it.
Outstanding !! Simply beautiful !!
Chatoyance and thank you for the share here, a great inspiration for me to think about and apply to my projects
Great job! I've seen lot's of the epoxy tables - this turned out really terrific.
Chatoyance! I love the glass instead of an epoxy for the river. That looks really awesome
Great work with a fair amount of dealing with the unknowns, that takes a lot of confidence in ones ability. Cheers!
Is the glass toughened after waterjet cut?
awesome product.
I think you have created Art,
young Man.
