      my guess for what happened with the weird stain is some oils got spilled on it at some point (maybe when it was cut fresh) and it was so deeply imbedded it just came up. that or natural oils from the pecan wood.

      thanks I hate it. the gold legs with the crystal rock effect is ugly.
      would have been nicer with a more red dye on the legs, and use a blue dye in the epoxy rather than black, its too cloudy and dark

    Love the way you took a deep breath when opening the box to reveal what was essentially very expensive firewood.

    Too high humidity or oil on the surface of the wood could cause the waviness. Since it was so spongey, maybe the oils from your hand stuck around 🤷‍♀️ I can't imagine it being that humid in your shop

    • @hadensnodgrass3472
      @hadensnodgrass3472 Рік тому +14

      My guess was there was bug(s) that dried up and died inside the wood. The high temperature of the epoxy freed the oils, and they floated to the surface.

    I can't say I love that texture in the epoxy. I think you did an awesome job. And it looks like you executed your vision extremely well. But that wood has such interesting visuals already, it seems like the busyness of the epoxy detracts from it.

    I make epoxy floorings for a living. From my experience whenever i had some kinds of wavey textures it was because of moist or greasy surface. 2nd option can also be that the wood is still sucking up the epoxy while in the drying/reacting process. When some areas of the wood are still more denser than rotting parts, it means that different areas suck up more or less epoxy than the healthy denser areas. (Sorry for bad explanation, im not English)

    Pecan pie is wonderful. You might want to explore using thickened epoxy resin to fill small bug holes, etc before the flood coat. Ahron African meat uses it on small turnings if you need a visual.

    Talk about saving a piece of wood fr3om the brink of the burn pile. If ever this applied to a timber slab it is this one. I love the way you jumped right into it & set about salvaging the unsalvagable. I am also very impressed with the 'carving down under'. This was a master stroke & went a long way to producing a TOP CLASS table from nothing. WELL DONE. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

    Looks amazing! I will copy that bubble technic 😀 Ah, and one thing to add: When carving outside of the shop all the dust will be blown into the enviroment and easily stay there for the next 100years (epoxy is extremly durable). I know it's alotta dirt, but doing it inside and then cleaning would be way more friendly to the plant we leave for our kids🤗

    It’s awesome to see what you can do with rotten wood, and it’s great saving it! And this piece looks beautiful and made strong with epoxy. I like carving myself, but I think carving in this particular piece is too much, because it’s already quite “busy” piece of wood with textures and colours. One thing I would definitely change: legs, this shape is not suitable for this style of the table. I would just put black metal elegant legs, that would bring balance with busy top. Overall, very interesting project, I love watching videos when people are not afraid to try something new.
