Mr. Kaulfers, thank you for sharing your journey with us. My wife and first started watching you on your excellent JMT video and I hope you get a chance to return to the PCT during a year with less snow. We are doing the same stretch of the JMT later this year and your video provided valuable insight. Thanks for your contribution to the hiking community and we hope to someday run into you out on a California trail. The journey will continue!
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful journey and personal background. Good luck in the South Bay! Wish I could afford to move back. Mile Marker Follower out!
Hello Milemarker, Two of your quotes have become a part of my thought process, " There is nothing to be gained by being miserable" and " I am out here to have FUN" Maybe not exact but close. I have enjoyed followed your travels from the start of the souther pct section. I think you have made a very thoughtful and prudent decision to cease your hike where you did. Too much snow and one cannot begin to appreciate the beauty of California while walking the PCT with this years snow fall. I live in Sacramento and have enjoyed watching your videos of the Mt Tam area. Have hiked most of those trails and they are really special. Matt Davis and The Dipsea are outstanding hiking areas. Hope that you keep posting becasue I and many other people will be looking for you. Very Best!!
Thanks for the note!!! Coincidentally I was looking through some old pictures of mine when I was in Afghanistan and I had a white board in my office with quotes, one of my favorites was from Paul Galanti, he was a POW for over 6 years, (he had written me a note), it was “There's no such thing as a bad day when you have a doorknob on the inside of the door.” Puts things in perspective, and yes, the Bay Area has awesome hikes…the Dipsea is my favorite, what is your favorite in the Sacramento area?
@@Milemarker123 In Sacramento you have to have favorite walks. As you probably know Sacramento is flat so if you want a hill you have to go to a freeway over pass or to a multi-level parking garage. My wife and I enjoy hiking at Point Reyes Natl Seashore. Most of the hikes are outstanding, especially Palomarin Trail and the Estero hike. The Tomales penninsula with Elk sitings is also a wonderful out and back hike. The hikes in the Marin Headlands are all in the top tier category. I will look forward to more videos as you post in the months ahead.
@@RKitowskiahh!!! I have been all over the Marin headlands and done Tomalas Point to see the elk, I did hike in Cronan Ranch yesterday near the American River, nice place, and no snow!!!
@@Milemarker123 Yes on Cronan Ranch. My wife and I were hiking on the trails of Cronan Ranch and Magnolia Ranch about a month ago. Made several trips to the area as it is an easy one hour drive from Sacramento. Great views of the South Fork of the American River. A nice feature of the area is that the trails from Magnolia and Cronan are interconnected. Richard Kitowski
That was a great 75 days much mahalo for sharing your hike. one day I’ll hike sections of the pct like you did. Happy Memorial Day weekend mile maker . Aloha
Mile Marker, my husband and I have loved following your adventure! You were about a week ahead of our kids on the trail. You helped us know what was ahead for them, until they flipped up to Walker Pass. We texted them last week and said we were gonna miss one of the hikers that we had been following ever since March 17. They, of course, asked who, and we said mile marker, to which they exclaimed, we met him!!! They were going southbound, and you were going northbound. “The Lathers Outside.” They said you were such a nice guy to which my husband and I agree! Your decision makes so much sense. I hope the new job goes well! Thank you for your service to our country. We look forward to when your back in trail, wherever it is!
Snow 1, Mile Marker 0, but will state that discretion is the better part of valor. I wanted to have fun, and did just that!!! I knew going in that this epic snow year would likely keep me from going all the way. I am now a section hiker, which I am good with!!! So glad that you joined me and glad to have crossed paths with ‘the Lathers’ who I now subscribe to on UA-cam, looks like they are almost at KMS. I start my new job on Wednesday, I need to decide what to wear…having a uniform made things simple…Mile Marker
Thanks for bringing us along on your journey, and for providing insight and "a voice of reason" for some of us older folks who also long for the trail. Enjoyed every mile! And, thank you for your service sir. Hope to follow you on your next adventure.
Thank you, my goal was to have fun, just not Type III fun…there are some very capable folks out there with a high tolerance for risk that will get through, again, my goal is to have fun…I will share future adventures. My pleasure to serve.
Exceptionally difficult year for hiking the PCT due to the extreme winter snowstorms. I had hoped the PCTA would use some common sense and loosen up their "only 50 hikers per day" limit so that hikers wouldn't be forced to start in March. If they'd given it any thought they would have realized they were putting people in harm's way, not to mention that it was predictable that 90% of the early hikers would be forced to quit because of impossible and dangerous hiking conditions. But the PCTA was inflexible and prioritized not "overwhelming trail town resources" over hiker safety. You gave it your best shot. Kudos. There's always next year, on an low-average snow year you would have a blast on the PCT.
PCTA isn't responsible for hiker safety. That's the hiker's own responsibility. PCTA manages over-use of the trail, and even 50 people a day is way too much.
I was thinking that if I did this last year, I would be close to Sonora pass, but this year’s conditions offered some opportunities to do things out of order and cross paths with others multiple times…plus, I got good at figuring out public transportation in SoCal.
Say it ain't so! Enjoyed your vids. I was supposed to start 3/22 so we probably would have crossed paths at some point. Had a big life change pop up and the snowpack made the decision to cancel easier. Props to you for getting out there and giving it a go in the face of long odds...it's a testament to your character. I hope to be out there next year, maybe I'll see you.
Youi did a great job. I am doing a car camp trip to CA in and around the Eastern Sierras. Plan on lots of bugs. Enjoyed watching your videos. Many Blessings to you.
Through hiking thousands of miles in one summer is ridiculous in my opinion but if that's a feather you want in your hat better to wait for the right summer. @@Milemarker123
Epic hike and THANKS for taking me/us along with you. I look forward to the next chapter. PERSONALLY, I think you should have taken this as destiny to divert to the AT for this year, but hey - I don't have your bills to pay or your wonderful wife to tolerate adventures this long. In August, I'll be in the Golden Trout Wilderness Area. I'll pm you beforehand to see where you are. Happy trails!
The AT was certainly considered, but I wanted to do as much of the PCT as possible, and yeah, the CA membership dues are expensive, so heading to work.
nice view up there near Shasta. That's great you have a job lined up. It seems like in a couple months much more snow will clear...but I guess you won't be back this year if you're working.
David, thank you for taking all of us along on this 2023 PCT adventure. I can see where the year 2023 on the PCT will have a large asterisk * behind it because of the very heavy snows. I believe the southern sierras may be nearly 250 % of a normal snow season. Up the coast into Oregon and Washington there is more snow than normal. We were at Crater lake NP maybe 10 years ago in late June nearing July. There was still heavy snow all around the coldura of the volcano even down hundreds of feet below. I know how much snow is in the sierras. However, I may take my backpack to the Whitney portal parking at the end of the closed roadway backpacking to the portal campground setting up my tent camping for 1 or 2 nights. I will bring my 2 1/2 year old american field labrador to hike and camp with me. She is very strong from constant hiking and running. She will have no issues with the snow with lots of food along. I just want to go up the trail with my ice ax and crampons for a day before they clear the roadway to the portal. Later in the summer I will do the North to South lake hike up from Bishop, CA. It is a very famous about 55 to 60 mile hike up from North lake over Piute pass and down to the JMT across Evolution creek, Evolution valley, Muir pass, down to Le Conte meadows, up into Dusy basin, over Bishop pass, down and out at South lake. It is one of the most spectacular high sierra hikes. It can be done in 6 days and 5 nights or 5 days and 4 nights. You don't want to go through too fast Evolution valley is spectacular especially at sunrise or sunset. The huge obsticle on the North to South lake hike is crossing the lower Evolution creek. We crossed about 10 years ago in august. It was about 100 feet wide and still knee high in places. That was August in a lighter snow year That stream crossing is at the bottom of that huge Evolution basin that is a huge funnel concentrating all of the snow melt water from above. There is no bridge and worse are several water falls less than about 1,000 feet downstream. Now and for the next few months it will be a very dangerous swollen stream crossing I believe you made the right decision avoiding the very heavy snow and swollen streams of the high sierras into the summer of 2023.
Wow, you have a couple of nice trips planned!!! I hope conditions are favorable when you hike…I have crossed evolution creek twice, once at the trail in 2013 and upstream in 2018. Thanks so much for watching my videos and attention to what I was doing…I think posting in real time (when feasible) was helpful to me, as I may get comments that would be good tips to upcoming sections.
Totally understandable decision. Nice close with the snow depth report. Once the snow leaves, its going to be an epic year for mosquitos. Last year it was dry and still thru-hikers in OR and WA did little but hike or shelter in their tents. Did not seem like a lot of fun. Thanks for documenting your trip and recording your observations. I learned a lot.
Glad you came along with me, I learned a lot about the state of California and the people…mostly for the good, but walking thru so many burnt areas of Forrest reinforced the need to address how forests are managed
Agreed…just saw a FB post of some folks that went over Forrester….they had a clip of a snow bridge collapsing and some high consequence terrain in the approach to Forrester…this person got off at Bishop and will flip north…
