If anyone is considering getting a parrot, please, please, PLEASE consider adoption. Parrots are one of the most abandoned pets because of their specialized care. This is especially terrible for birds because they need constant socialization and to have a steady home as they form very close bonds with their human flock (which can’t happen if they keep moving from place to place.) The average parrot will live in THREE different homes throughout their lifetime

nevaeh peanut That’s good, adoption is always the best option! But, cockatiels require a lot of attention 1-2 hours daily minimum. However, if you think you still have time with all your pets to take care of one then good luck convincing your dad! (Also, if one of your pets is a cat or other predatory animal with free roam I wouldn’t recommend a bird because you can never be to sure they won’t get the bird. Dogs are an exception in my opinion though. You can train them to leave the bird alone, but you should never leave them together without supervision regardless). :)

Maybe you could try to meet some people who have parrots near you, and become someone who can become a backup caregiver for them (like for if they go out of town)? Then you can have a parrot in your life without the commitment, and also help a parrot owner out!

You are completely right! I adopted a Scarlet Macaw named Tootsie about two years ago and he was in very bad shape at first from the situation he was put through...I ended up adopting Tootsie through a family friend that told me that her aunt passed away and she had a bird that needed to go before they sold the house. Personally at that point Ive never owned any other pet besides marine life such as big salt water tanks but I decided to take a day off work and drive up to her aunts house to see this bird. The first time I saw Tootsie I was heart broken, he was caged in a small ass cage where he could only turn around on his perch and 85% of his feathers were plucked..at first I couldnt get close to the cage cause he would scream bloody murder like a child having a tantrum. My family friend told me that they werent able to take him out so this poor bird was stuck in this cage for 6 weeks straight and the only interaction hes had was when her aunts son would come in and feed him but the screaming got so bad that the son would bang on the cage to get Tootsie to stop screaming. I knew personally I was taking on a big responsibility with adopting Tootsie and having no beforehand training or guidance with how to take care of this type of animal but I couldnt leave him and took him home that night. He is my whole life now, I take him everywhere with me, when I do errands and when I go on hikes and walks. I want him to see the world like I do! Two years later he is 100% better, my vet has absolutely loved and adored him and he has stopped his screaming completely..though he does have some screaming fits when he doesnt get his way sometimes lol! He now has a whole room to himself that I have decked out with everything you could imagine and everything to stimulate his mind. The only one issue he has is with males around me when he on my shoulder or if he is perched on my arm, He will go into popcorn mode and fluff up but he will be fine when he is perched on my dad or brothers shoulder and be calm. Ive changed my life around for Tootsie and I dont regret it one bit

After reading your comment I just had to reply. The transformation of your Macaw is amazing! Glad to hear that Tootsie made a full recovery. I’m sure Tootsie really appreciates everything that you did for him. I have always thought that birds make cool pets but the reality for me is that I can never have one for the reasons stated in this video. I wish you well!

Tootsie sounds so cool! I want this type of relationship with a bird, and I'm trying to adopt one soon but I wanna research a lot first to make sure I can treat the cutie right. Also I think its so cool you can take Tootsie out on hikes with you without them trying to fly away! That's crazy goals

Katie Kat I’m rescuing two agapornis’s next month! My ex classmate had them poor birds for a year in a bad condition (without handling at all, there’s no human interaction, they never ket the birds out of their cage and they don’t have a proper diet) and I’m finally rescuing after my parents said i could. Also I can’t wait to form a bond if it would be possible bc they’re in pair it will be much harder. Also i will have to name them since they haven’t been named lol

I want a bird, not a parrot I don’t want to end up dying before my pet(I won’t get any pet until I’m older, so it’s more likely). And I saw a parrot once who was 60 years old, and his owner was dead and it was grumpy(screamed at you), its feathers were pulled out, and the only thing that calmed it down and made it calm down was the song “My Bonny”, and it would dance. It was so sad.
Also, even if I did want a parrot, I’d get an easier and smaller bird first(as an inexperienced bird person, I want to be able know what I’m doing and not get hurt or be scared of my own feathered child). I remember there was a pet store in my town that had the owner’s pet parrot chillin there, and it hated kids, and would scream as loud as it could and literally laugh if they jumped or cried, it also likes to try to bite. I don’t want it to end up like that, no thanks.

Everytime someone meets any of my parrots and says they want one (I take them to market with me on harness, one at a time, so that happens often) I inform them of the care required. Some still want a parrot, but with most, you can see the desire in their eyes die when they realise that it is a lot of work, and they're too lazy to be bothered with it.

    • @skyeiron5872
      @skyeiron5872 5 років тому

@@squidneythesquid2487 A Bourkes Parakeet would probably suit you well, so long as you are willing to leave it fully flighted and to have some fly time outside of their cage (which should be horizontal rather than vertical). They tend to be very passive, quiet birds, (odd for a parrot). Their vocalisations sound rather mouse-like. They are not given to screaming. They are small birds. Live 15 years on average. Mostly entertain themselves and do not enjoy playing with most parrot toys. They do like preening toys though. They're generally aviary birds so you will most likely have to tame one down. They're not as interactive as other parrots, but they do tend to be sweethearts.

I feel like this can apply to many animals people get too. Before i got my first rabbit i didnt know they lived as long as they do. I also had water frogs (i think their real name was african dart frog? I cant remember i was about 7 when we got them) when i was a kid and back then no one really looked up how long animals live for... i had these damn frogs for almost 9 years before my brother accidentally knocked the tank over and didnt tell anyone.( they die really quickly if they are exposed to air for too long and thats what happened bc my little brother had no ides what to do when he broke the tank) My mom was like WTF lol they were just happy little frogs for so long. We thought they would live for maybe 3-4 years tops.I take into consideration how long pets live now as an adult and i always try and tell people to remember these things bc i have seen many many people buy animals and a few years later get rid of them because they just dont want to or cant take care of them any longer. Its really sad.

In fairness to some pet owners, life is.. tricky sometimes. You might be a hundred percent willing to commit to taking care of the animal, but later down the road, you end up with a room mate or partner who doesn't like dealing with that animal, you may end up in financial straits, etc.
It's not always possible to predict those kinds of things, or avoid them completely.
Don't get me wrong, I do know MOST first time pet buyers are misinformed on the animal they're considering, but there's also cases where unforeseen events force an owner to part with an animal they otherwise wouldn't, so it can't always be avoided, unfortunately. And in that scenario, it's just as sad for the owner, as the animal.
I actually did some volunteer work for an animal shelter, and there were a few times where, around the time I was signing out, was when our office was opening to the public, and we'd get people coming in to leave their animals with us. This one guy, and his wife, had really bad mobility issues, so they couldn't really keep up with walking their dog, as much as they loved her. He was even crying when he was trying to part with her, and the best we could do was reassure him that she'd go to a good home.

I still can't hold him because he gets anxious and aggressive, but hopefully in time we can get there. I never expected to have a bird and am so happy that Georgie is in my life. He was given to my mom to take care of for a period but that turned into a year and a half, and eventually my mom didn't have the time so she asked me to take care of him, and now he's been with me for 3 years I believe.

I'm actually happy I didn't know what I got myself into because if I did know, I wouldn't have bought her and then I wouldn't have my best friends here today. I did teach her to kind of say "Shut up Shrek", and her friend Rio to "Hai hai".

THANK YOU!!! A friend of mine has an Eclectus parrot, he said his parents got it before he was born. He’s currently 18 years old and told me they’ve NEVER taken it out of its cage. It’s in a “large” parakeet cage. I told him it was messed up, that they need to be let out every once in a while and he told me “Well, we’ve never taken her out and she seems just fine so 🤷🏼‍♂️” and I literally wanted to smack the shit out of him. Like it’s in a cage way smaller than even the pet shops would recommend, and doesn’t get the exercise that it needs being locked in the cage all day. I’m ranting here because I sent him this video and he said the same thing. So yea. I’m gonna go scream into my pillow until my head explodes. 😤

My grandma has an African Grey and our yards connect, but our houses are not connected to each other, and we can hear him screeching at our house. Also, we had a Goffin/Tanimbar cockatoo and she had self mutilated before we got her because she was kept in an empty bedroom all alone so she didn’t get any attention. She was feather-less when we got her. She passed away suddenly. I am very educated in animals and the care of them. My life revolves around animals. It’s sad when people get an animal just because they think they want it, and then aren’t prepared for their care.

This just disappoints me further in that my parents decided to get my brother and I two parakeets as our first pets. Their names were Lemonade and Lime.
I was like four at the time, my brother being seven. We weren’t allowed to take the birds out of the cage since my mom didn’t want them flying around ever. The cage was bigger than most people might get their cages, but still they were stuck in there all the time with few toys or things to do.
To make it worse, my mom moved them to a smaller, more decorative cage later because it was shaped like a castle and was painted gold so therefore she liked it more.
I’m pretty sure the first one just died out of stress. The second followed soon after. During this time they lived in the same area as our washer and dryer. A room we only entered to do laundry.
My family is really big on giving ‘present’ pets to each other and they never do research beforehand. At this point, I’m the sole person who does research on their pets and tells them how to actually take care of them. Then they realize it’s difficult and just give the pets away. Don’t ever buy a pet without figuring out how to take care of it. Never give somebody a pet as a present unless you know they want it, can care for it, understand how much time and effort they’ll be giving the animal, and already have an enclosure for it to live in. Most importantly, don’t buy a pet for your kid unless you’re willing to actually take care of it yourself. Especially if your kid’s below the age of ten, you’ll pretty much be doing everything and you have to have the time to give the pet attention.
I hope to get some of the smaller varieties of parrots again someday and take much better care of them than my family ever could.

I've dealt with my brother and sister. I think mess is the least of my problems. The most worrying is the fact that I know I'm allergic to birds because I was really bad around the parakeets we used to have.
They murdered each other. I think they were trying to mate, I don't really know. But I'm okay with long time commitments since I plan on getting a sulcata turtle anyway. They don't require a lot of attention, just enough to make sure they don't push over the fridge or run through a wall.
I do still need to do a lot of research to narrow down the species for a potential bird friend though.

That’s why adoption is always the best option. I wish there were no pet birds and that they were free to fly but sadly it’s not the case. It’s our responsibility to take care of the ones we’ve taken into our homes to our best ability and not support breeders (no matter how amazing they are) or pet stores because they’re bringing more birds into the world where more people who don’t know how to care for them can mistreat them. I love parrots so much and my sun conure has made me realize that I want to get a degree in ornithology but I still believe they should be purely wild (or at the very least just for specialists or sanctuaries).

Between my GCC and Grey, my Grey is the quieter bird. I do go to work so my Grey has a large cage with plenty of chew toys in it. Once I'm home, my Grey is out of its cage. It can work for people who are away from home 8-hours. You just need to be creative and think of ways to keep them occupied. Create a play gym for them made of PVC pipes or bird safe branches. Birds being birds, they love hopping from branch to branch.

My parrotlet knows when I'm home by the sound of my footsteps, so as soon as I walk in the house he starts to call for me. He likes to groom people and he loves when I have big flowers out in my room because he'll fly from his perch or my shoulder to the plants. He also sings with me when I play my ukelele or piano. He likes to be read to. And he talks back when I go to turn the lights off and cover him up for the night.

it’s 100% true that all birds make noise lol. I adopted my green cheek thinking they’re known for being “quiet birds” but what I misunderstood is that to bird people, “quiet” means “not as loud as a sun or a cockatoo”. my GCC vocalizes fairly infrequently, but when he does, it’s loud! I still consider him a pretty quiet bird, because he isn’t *noisy*, he just screams a few times in the morning and evening. But I definitely went into getting him with different expectations

We have been away from them overnight two times since we got them over 9 months ago (after making sure they had plenty of food and water and that a timer was set for the lights to go out at the right time for the night etc). Also when considering getting a bird, depending on the species it's a good idea to consider getting a pair or even a small flock of 4. This can be more difficult to accomplish with a rescue of course, because they might not be used to other birds, but it might be worth a try depending on the bird. Long term the birds will benefit from constantly having company, because they aren't completely dependent on human interaction all the time since they can bond with each other. Of course this will mean you'll need more space and that there will be more noise, but I think that's worth it to make the bird/s happy.

Man I got to tell you I look at videos on UA-cam a lot because of things that spark me Interest and there are so many things that spark that everything from arm wrestling to aliens to pizzagate Flat Earth social issues guns Mysteries whatever. For some reason tonight I thought that I might like to get a parrot, and it was only because I love pets but can't really have a dog where I'm at and don't really want a cat can't have one anyway and I was really intrigued by the idea of a parrot out living me and me sending it up and passing it on to someone that would take care of it so on and so forth. After watching your video I have to say that you accomplished your goal because you informed me that I have no business getting a bird. I think they're awesome and maybe someday I would do it. With that said I would have to tell you that of all the things I've looked into on a whim, this video that you made that I came across impresses me very very much. I noticed that your birds have a few dowel rod perches in their cages, and I don't mean this to be rude, but I'd recommend swapping them out for natural wood perches; they're pretty easy to make if you have bird safe wood around you, and it's a lot better for their feet.
