I had to fast forward because I never could have believed that the broad, dripping beginning strokes could ever turn out to be a beautiful, finished image. But it did! Good work.
This is one of the best tutorials I've seen. Thank you, thank you, for sharing. I really enjoyed it. I love the large fluid brush strokes, something I haven't been able to accomplish yet. And your explanation of the highlights on the cornea are invaluable.
I love this approach also. It feels very natural a little bit like being a sculpture with light and dark, cool and warm light. Very. Inspiring tutorial as always
Wow, interesting to see how a picture evolves, from blotches that in the end end up in a grreat . Well done. I cam no good painting or drawing people, I cannot do proportions right, so I stick to landscapes or flowers. But I admire someone who can. So well done again!
Magical genuis artist ,you have a true master's hand and observation and more ,I am a professional artist also but portrait can be Titus but I see Rembrandt and great imposto of great master's in your work thank you for your time and consideration to share your mastery.
Sergey; that's a beautiful painting. Like many Russian painters, there is often a lot of soul in their works, as is your peice. In Utah there is a museum in Springville that houses the largest body of the Soviet Era paintings in the world outside of Russia. The Russian paintings there are just astonishing, the finest peices in that wonderful museum in my opinion.
Its a very painterly approach using the oil colour in rich strokes, very precisely forming the face with the movements of your brush strokes in a very tactile way. Very beautifull
Thank you Sergey, I’ve watched in detail every step, it’s really helpful. I’m starting my portrait tomorrow and will be following your method every step of the way. I think as you emphasised I will try and keep it as loose as possible until the detailing at the end. My problem has always been getting into detail too quickly.
Nice:) Some people don't understand that the point of the video wasn't about making a 1:1 copy or super precised painting, but to show the process. I personally love your style and will try oils, as for now I use only acrilic, but I think oils are different world:) Поздравляю из Болгарии
Some alternative colors to the cadmiums that are a bit cheaper, but also just as archival: Instead of Cadmium Lemon, use Nickel Yellow Titanate (py53). Similar to yellow ochre in tint strength, it's a much weaker color than cad lemon which would take some adjustment, but the negative could be a positive as weak colors can be more forgiving in mixes. Also a pigment that could be used as an extender pigment for your cad lemon. Instead of Cad Red Medium, use Pyrrole Red (pr254). This modern pigment is the same used on Ferrari's. It is opaque to semi opaque so it's covering power is only slightly less than cad red, but despite this it won't lose chroma in mixes as quickly as cad reds do. A very strong color, it may be worthwhile to use it's opposite, a blue green like thalo turquoise, to "kill" it's intensity. Very useful red and marginally more archival than cad red.
Thanks for demoing this fantastic technique. I've always been "scared" to paint like that because I feel like an acrobat without a net. I need the safety of a good basic drawing. But I'm gonna try this at my next live model. Cheers
very helpful, thanks Sergey, I have a quation, I need to covert the backside of the canvas can you tell me what can I use for that, texel, paper or wood, or what ever, ? THANK YOU
Its a wonderfull portrait with a beautifull texture of eyes, skin and hair and I totally agree with your last remark that it is very important to stop in the right moment and leave it when it is still a bit sketchy .... and totally lively
Thank you for sharing your videos! They're fun and inspiring, and I count myself lucky that you offer them in English. Could you explain why the shadows necessarily have to be warm when the light source is cold? Is it just a handy rule of thumb to make things aesthetically pleasing? Is it some kind of visual perception phenomenon, that we will always see something warmer relative to an area that looks colder? Do you always then use cold shadows to accompany a warm light source? I guess I'm also wondering how all of that works when you have the two different light sources - a daylight one on the right, and an incandescent one on the left. What happens in the middle, where those two color systems (warm light source+cold shadows//cold light source+warm shadows) meet?? . . . or are there any situations you can think of where you would depict only cold light AND cold shadows (or only warm light areas w/warm shadows)? Would you say, find a situation like that in reality but override that for a richer look? Just trying to wrap my mind around a logical approach and how to employ it.
Your painting is so beautiful. it brings tears to my eyes to watch. Are you using acrylics or oil? Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful gift you have.
A beautiful painting, but I am bothered by the placement of the eye on the left; it seems to me that it should be higher than the eye on the right as we look at the model. It also seems ever so slightly too close to the eye on the right. I do love the freshness and looseness of the portrait.
Hi, i am an ex pro portrait painter. I had absolutely no faith in the outcome at first but you got her, a few things i see a lot of blu on thr left and the pale flesh down the left cheek you have done yellow are yougoing to go flesh i am wondering the left cardiganis viilet blue willyou change it, you have done decentjob though alll in all. I watch other artist to learn
You certainly deserve the title of Master, If your work wasn't of the standard i could see an argument against it, but its not the case. Beautiful work.
По цвету интересно, но в конце по-моему немного испортили добавлением синего на щеку слева, что-то неживое получилось. И рот, конечно, немного перекошен. В целом неплохо, смело по цвету.
It is a beautifully rendered portrait, however her left eye is just a smidgen too high, maybe as much as a 1/16 of an inch. I have done this several times, myself, so it may be why I see it.
Es bueno el parecido, aunque el lado derecho de la cara esta un poco caído. El ojo, la nariz y la boca están mas bajos. Te hago una corrección constructiva bajo mi punto de vista. Un saludo.

How did it come out?
Very good video showing how to use a traditional limited palette of the kind that is typical of portrait painting.

This is more like magic than painting. Creating accurate beauty out of a sloppy mess.

Your painting is so beautiful. it brings tears to my eyes to watch. Are you using acrylics or oil? Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful gift you have.
Very nice demo. How long did it take you in real time from start to finish, and did you do it in one sitting or over days?
