    Good review. Did I miss someway to attach it to the body? And I don't mean a carabiner so it sways and thumps with every set. There is so much missing from this kit. I would spend at least another $60 in upgrades like food procurement at least another ten water tabs a water purifier a few food bars etc etc yes space blankets are handy but fragile and noisy bulky when refolded just to name a few issues. I tell my students take them if you have the space but for down and dirty survival use an SOL bivy. Instant shelter when you're losing the light you're exhausted and the weather is bad. Find natural shelter crawl in and get as much sleep as you can. Save your energy. That said it's a good start and in someone like our hands it's doable as is. Earplugs are good in mosquito zones or if you or your partner/friend have issues with wind or thunder.

    Always the emphasis on fire. Fire fire fire. If you’re injured, cold, wet, tired and it’s getting dark, you need immediate insulation and reliable shelter. A warm sleeping bag and a mat and a lightweight tent, even one that relies on trees for support, is much more reliable than fire and saves time and energy.
    Keeping a fire going all night, even with dry wood, means waking up every hour, preventing decent sleep. An all night fire needs very big logs that are hard to cut. Unless you’re in bear country a fire is an unnecessary extra problem.
    Decent medical gear, good navigation practise and trail marking and a realistic understanding of time, distance and ability will often prevent the need for an unplanned camp out.

    Not to bad. I think a premade kit can be a good foundation to build on provided the container is good and the contents useful. The outer bag looks pretty decent and the Alocksaks are great. The contents are a bit spare but of decent quality. You could easily bulk it up a bit yourself, as you say to save a few bucks. I did a similar project using a UST Survival Kit 1.0 from my local REI. The contents of that kit are also spartan but decent and I liked the nylon pouch (good quality and room to add more stuff).

    I like your practical viewpoint. Too many put down others for relying on gear rather than skill. That's an assumption too many people make and use as a criticism. Knowledge, skills, experience and gear are all elements of survival. When we tell ourselves that survival is difficult and requires years of training we defeat ourselves. Everyday we engage in behaviors or tasks that sustain us. We learn as live. It would be great if we could all walk into the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on our bodies and survive, but it's easier with a few useful items than trying to "make" things in the field. Lost people want to stay alive till rescue, not rebuild society.
    The kit seems like a good start. I had similar items in a waist pack (Fanny pack) and it was easy to carry, but held a lot of basic survival items except for a tarp, food or water.

    Great video and nothing against you but all the stuff in these GATA (over priced) "survival kits" is things that can all be purchased at your local Walmart for a whole lot less.

    Thanks for the comprehensive review. I'd use the ear plugs for fishing bobbers/floats. That may have been the thought behind including them in this kit.

      EverydayTacticalVids Just press your hook into the flat side and out through the rounded end and it will remain buoyant. You can also group several for heavier bait as well. Try it out!

    I have replaced the 550 paracord I carry with Titan Survivorcord. Yeah it costs/weighs a bit more than 550 (a 100 foot hank will run you about $25-$30), but it's multi-use and I like that! I have my survival truck/car kits in small day backpacks, so I'm not super concerned with keeping it small/light as possible necessarily. I like their kits though, definitely a great place to start at least, and they seem to always put good, practical and useful stuff in them.

    when are people going to start making "Survival Kits" that keep you from getting into a survival situation in the first place? Throw out that mini compass and put in a full sized one. Small kits like this one are items I carry every day. I stash the items in an around my regular edc. If you need a "Survival Kit" then you need a solid shelter, a good compass and more means of fire. It all doesn't have to be expensive either. Keep the gear on you and learn how to use it effectively in a daily situation and you won't end up paddling up a creek.

    Okay then, I see a fairly useful kit eazy to locate in low light conditions and with practice would be a big help, not something to buy a d throw on a shelf and say I got it I will surely survive.

    Are we just going to pretend that was not total crap at 3:53? I’d rather go on Amazon and get a $12.00 Mora, a real whistle, Bic lighter, cotton balls, have it delivered by 8pm same day all while saving $10.00 than any of this tat.

    At the end you mentioned carrying a lighter. Do you have any experience or have you reviewed those plasma lighters? I recently saw them and wondered if they were any good?

    • @roberthutchins1507
      @roberthutchins1507 5 років тому

      I have 2 of them. One I got in a Survival Box subscription, it's about the size of a road flare and is hollow for storing small items. The other has a long neck for lighting candles, stoves, and even fires. The problem is that they slowly discharge during storage, and need to be recharged every couple of months. For long term storage, I bought 2 little peanut sized lighters that use zippo fuel, and seal air and water tight for long term storage.

    • @EverydayTacticalVids
      @EverydayTacticalVids  5 років тому

      I agree with Robert. They’re cool to carry around if you can charge them up but I’ll take matches and a fire steel and a good old fashion bic lighter over them in any kind of emergency kit

      Although I use big lighters a lot (who doesn't), I prefer sealed Zippo fuel lighters for my emergency kit. I feel there is less of a chance of fuel leaking by accidental valve operation or damage to the case.@@EverydayTacticalVids
