As a former seasonal bagggar handler, THANK YOU. Bikes in bags are so much more convenient than just sending it as is. Hard shells keep your gear safe, havent heard of a claim on broken gear in hard shell. Sending bikes as is, is extremely inconvenient. Bubble wrapped gear is inconvenient for TSA and other security. Bungy wrapped gear is annoying for all baggage handlers. We get it on a belt and then stack everthing onto a cart. That cart then goes to a belt loader where all the bags and gear are then loaded by hand in a cramped and tight space. A lot of airlines DO NOT have a special gear cart for transport/ special area under the plane. So again, thank you for sending normal luggage.
I was thinking of purchasing a Brompton but after looking at the BYB 8 I'll be saving lots of money doing so. I do have a Tern Link d 8 but I love the compact part of the BYB. Thanks for your video and the air tag idea. Good luck on your bike shop.
I LOVE your bike - it's gorgeous! I just bought a second-hand Dahon Mariner D7 yesterday that's in like-new condition. It'll my very first folding bike and I want to see how much I like it and if I'd like to use it for touring vs. my full-sized bikes. If this is something that I really get into, I'll have to look more closely at Tern's Link models!
Bike Friday Makes a trailer attachment to a bike along with the framework for a bike trailer. If I wanted to be completely self contained, I would covert the Airporter suitcase into a trailer using Bike Friday's set up. I would drill just 3 holes into the suitcase and attach the trailer frame and wheels. The trailer parts all come apart. I imagine you can fit the 12 inch wheels into a carry on bag (since they would take up too much space in the Slim Airporter suitcase) and the disassembled trailer metal tubes inside the suitcase with the bike. The trailer parts is a bit pricey but hey, you would have everything you want. .
Hello, we both just bought have Tern Verge S8i, build quality and wheel size absolutely fantastic. Extremely well engineered and made with worldwide Shimano warranted, servicing arrangements - hydraulic disc brakes, 8 speed hub gears and belt drive. NO MORE ARCHAIC BLACK OILY CHAINS! Will these suitcases be suitable for our bikes? PS, Excellent well presented video clip
Great video, unfortunately the Airporter Slim is near impossible to buy now, New or used. Was lucky to find one in Singapore, I'm in NZ, and looking forward to flying my BYB in it
@@BikeShopGirl I tried to order one (via dealer) and Tern importer response was 'after trying to order [Tern are] saying they are not available anymore'
@@BikeShopGirl No, I got my BYB here and most other accessories are available. I suspect shipping cost maybe why but seems odd they (Tern, not importer or shop) didn't even provide a quote and let the customer decide.
Great video, Arleigh! What do you do with the Airporter bag once the bike is assembled? It would be pretty nice to be able to ride away from the airport and not have to take a taxi or public transit…
Good question! 9 times out of 10 I check it at my hotel. The random times this isn't available, I use the Burley Travoy to tow it wherever I'm going to. I take this trailer as a carry on to the plane FYI.
@@MrBaptista No idea on that one! An HSD in general needs a custom rack mount made to attach a Travoy. You may be able to figure something out but the Captain's Chair would probably prevent you from getting to the rack.
@@BikeShopGirl isn't the HSD's rack to low for the Travoy to attach to? I see Travoys attached to seatposts near the saddle all the time. That's why I thought about attaching it to the Captain's Chair. Here's an idea you might want to explore on a future video :)
My husband and own Solorock folding bikes with 20 inch wheels. We have used soft cases to transport our bikes on a recent flight and had the cases destroyed and the bikes damaged. We are looking for a hard case for them to take to New Zealand. Would the Tern Airporter Slim fit our bikes?
What do you do with the trunk when you get to your destination? Seems like you'll need to take a rideshare to get it to hotel room before you can use the bike.
The brake line looks that looks that long because I keep my handlebar so low, also for the fold you want a longer cable bundle. If someone was to ride this and needing a more upright fit then they need all those cables to be that long.
How is the riding experience with this folding bike compared with a regular frame? I keep, hearing about great experiences we have biking trails on the other side of the country or in Canada and really want to try some but transporting my bike across country isn’t an option. The Confederation Trail on Prince Edward Island is one I definitely want to explore.
It’s certainly much different for this super compact setup. But the BYB specifically is such a great riding folder bike. Stiff and responsive. I’ve bombed down some stupid stuff with it. My model only has a 1x8 so some climbing requires me to pretend I’m on a single speed :) What type of trails are you looking to ride?
@@BikeShopGirl Mainly thinking about the trails that have been established on old railroad right of ways. Wanting to get my wife to ride with me so I’m thinking ones that are not too strenuous and go through quaint towns and countryside,

Hello bike girl, is it really essential to buy an expensive tern airporter slim bike suitcase when I have several big hardshell suitcases at home and have no space for another big suitcase? I suppose, if I put a byb in a blister or bubble foil I can easily transport the bike in my normal suitcase. Or am I wrong? I would be very glad to hear your opinion about that isdue. Thank you very much!

Not needed. Google for an engineer's response. However for my Tern Verge it's easier to fit it in the suitcase with that extra inch of clearance and I have a nice Lezyne pump that inflates them quickly at the other end. Your Tires Will Not Explode.
@@ejrosa4792 I have a P10. I take it in a Samsonite suitcase that I got originally for a Bike Friday. I don't know if a Verge will fit in an Airporter Slim. I did get the tern padded packing cloth which is excellent and comes with printed instructions and slots for some parts. On a Verge, you should take a circlip tool and some spare circlips for the central locking pin, because the bike will not fold flat without removing the pin. Also, the discs warped after early trips, so I got a disc removal wrench and I unthread the discs from the wheels. For all these reasons, I'm looking at replacing the Verge with the BYB - fold and go, whereas the Verges really don't fold at all flat.
Are there other tern bikes that will fit in the airporter or airporter slim without a bunch of disassembly? I just recently started looking at folding bikes and thought the verge X11 looked cool but all the videos I see of it being packed most of the bike is being disassembled.
The BYB is so unique in that it doesn't require any disassembly. If you are mechanical, the disassembly of the Verge into an Airporter isn't terrible but it just wasn't something I wanted to deal with while also wrangling my kids on vacation!
I travel with a Verge. The packing is not trivial and involves taking off the stem. The frame joint is stressed when folded so I remove the folding pin which involves a circlip tool. After a bent rotor, I take the rotors off, but I don't know if that's really needed. Tern sells a great padded packing suit which has instructions printed on it. It's a GREAT bike to ride once unpacked though.
I like Tern BYB and I'd like to have an opportunity to try it out. I just wonder if it is better/worse then Brompton or Birdy as an overall ownership experience, not only for flying with it.

They both take long enough to pack and unpack that it's crazy to take them on a less-than-3-day trip and better if you have a week of biking in one place. Both will fit in the back of a rented SUV though partially folded/broken down.
