+Luca Car Mods a friend of mine a f-250 that has an aftermarket turbo that sounds like a jet engine but much more define than this duramax even at idle it squeals like a jet
If I were you, I would do the lift and tires next and then see if you still want to do the engine mods with the new driving dynamic that the truck has.
Coming from a guy who has an LLY and knows numerous other Duramax owners and performance shop mechanics and owners, I'd say yea do your wheels and tires for looks, but for performance, do the turbo mouth piece because the stock one is extremely restrictive (I'd recommend and s&b or a LBZ). Don't get sucked into thinking you need a cold air intake, they really don't help that much, not worth it in the long run. then do your deletes like egr and pcv, and then do your down pipe. Down pipe is something that gets over looked a lot but is very restrictive. It will also add a very nice sound to go with your 5" exhaust. Now everyone will say go buy a tuner, well first of all don't just get a tuner, get EFI Live, but before you do that, I HIGHLY recommend getting your transmission built. It will save you the headache later. One last thing I forgot to mention, get a lift pump. Doesn't have to be an expensive one, as long as you don't want to go over the top you'd be fine with a simple raptor.
the 5" also lowered velocity though so may not be the power gains a 4" would offer. low bp + high velocity = better power. but, when he puts a tune on it + whatever else he wants it'll probably be best. it's gonna sound great, look good and off road well.
+Kevin Kanzler Exhaust velocity doesn't make a difference post turbo . You want as little restriction as possible after turbo . Just because you want maximum pressure difference to get the exhaust turbine spinning as quick as possible
I purchased an 05 lly crew cab in silver birch back in August. I already did a 4" MBRP exhaust, egr delete and the lbz intake mouthpiece, all of which were very straightforward. This spring I'm looking at American eagle alloy 20x9 wheels, cognito leveling kit and kory tunes from ppei with the edge cts2 to monitor.
Loving the build so far. I would recommend the lift/wheel tire install before the tuning and intake just to make sure everything is tuned perfectly for the truck. Exhaust sounds amazing as well. Can't wait to see what you decide to go with in terms of wheels and tires. I'm running Fuel Kranks on Terra Grapplers at the moment, but would love to switch to American Forces in the future. Keep up the awesome work.
Don't need to pull the crossmember to get the cat pipe out. Remove the hanger that's bolted to trans (2 13mm) and it'll come right out towards the front of the truck.
I have the same system on my LB7 but I cut the tail pipe short to make it an axle dump. The echo of the exhaust off the ground makes it so much louder.
I go to the desert with one of my good friends and he has this exact truck and he put a 5 inch straight pipe. I've never been so turned on in my life when I heard the thing xD
Very nice exhaust! If you want a suggestion for tires, I would suggest Patriot Tires. Awesome tread pattern, and has a lot of ply layers that will last for a long time!
MBRP down pipe is a must on these trucks. You will notice far bigger gains from the down pipe then the exhaust. Not to bad on the install and youll see better Egts and Mpgs.
Truck sounds amazing man! I have a 2003 ( lb7 engine ) and I love mine! I have EFI Live by Kory Willis and I really recommend him for tuning! EFI Live is the best programmer you can get for these trucks! I also have a 5 inch mbrp straight pipe to a 7 inch tip and I couldn't believe the difference. Good luck on the build man!
PCV re-route is cheap and easy. After you get the egr bypass put in it wont matter but you might as well do it. Also look at the pump rub kits for the transfer case. The best part about older trucks is other people have already found all the gremlins.
Looks/sounds good! I like how you chose to cut the end of the exhaust back to get the tip tucked up under the truck. I see some around with the tip sticking way out past the bed side and it looks ridiculous.
Thanks. Its kinda a low mileage/nice find like yours. Ive owned it since 2010 and only has about 58k miles. Originally from Alabama/old man driven and I've done my best to keep it out of the Ohio salt here. Still all black and rust free underneath. Did some subtle mods and replaced a lot of swap parts and maintenance and it stays in the garage a lot as a spare/annoy the wife vehicle when I buy stuff for it. Lol.
Nice job! The turbo whistling comes much more to live now! How is it in US - can you do just any degree of loudness without getting trouble? Here everything is really strict. But your exhaust would be probably still ok in Germany. It's good to have someone with experience in you reach! And it's awesome to get someone recommended, who knows!
am I seeing this correctly that this thing only has thirteen thousand some odd mileage?!?! thing sounds amazing, I absolutely love this body style, probably one of my all time favorite body styles.. can't beat the sound of a duramax when it comes to diesel trucks imo
Gotta give you some good advice, if you plan on doing a lift sometime, DEFINITELY go with McGaughy's 7 inch lift and 36 inch tires, 20x14 Fuel Maverick wheels would look SICK on that truck. Cool video, and Love the Dmax
i have a 2004.5 lly iv had for about 6 years efi live and all that bullshit i did alot of work to it years ago ...I made a custom 4 inch strait pipe for her that comes out in front of the right rear tire for about $40 bucks and sounds better than any full run exhaust plus I think it looks cooler ....wish i would of said somthing about it before im sure you would Dig it > Nice Job thou Mike
Down pipe clamps are always a bitch! Even on my bmw it was a pain. Good updates dude. You're slowly making me desire a duramax and I don't even own a truck!
Might be a dumb question but once you drop the catalytic converter, doesn't that make the truck not meet emissions? I might just be dumb but I thought that would make it fail inspection.
+brandon armstrong no you are wrong the only trucks except from emissions if they are 25 years old if gas. Diesels don't have to take emission test if they are >2010
i did mine 4in straight pipe by myself in 4 hours 2 hours of getting pissed of and 2 hours after i stopped and though about how to do it hang it then tighten it. by the way it dose give it better bottom end power just for the fact the motor can breath better
5 inch pipes allow the vehicle to breath better. giving better are flow and passably even better millage. bigger pips will effect sound making the vehicle louder but honestly to me thats is a good thing lol.
So I guess since your truck is pre-dpf, there are no tune issues when you remove the cat? What tune are you planning on doing? Next question: are you still going with 35's, and if so, do you need to lift it or are you just doing a levelling kit? Sorry for all the questions just curious how mods on a GM compare to other trucks.
You should upgrade the down pipe off of the turbo because it can increase flow which causes faster turbo spool and thus more power. Also, it can lower your EGT levels.
Egr delete and efi live👌🏿 tuning is better done sooner than later cause at any time it can throw that engine code and put the engine in limp mode but seriously nice truck sounds good can't wait to see how it turns out
Sounds awesome. Not that it matters, but you'll lose a little bit of low end power by increasing the diameter of the exhaust (reduces exhaust gas velocity which reduces the scavenging effect).
I did it on my lly with it just up enough for the tires to hang 😅 it took a whole Saturday with a buddy. but I got diamond eye and it was only 340$ with a 5 to 8 inch tip for 55$ black :) it's in a axle dump setup with my 20x10 wheels and 33x12.50r20 nitto mt tires. I would do a lift wheels and tires before engine work since it's the most noticeable difference. mine is only leveled with 33's but with the exhaust it gets down on power. efi live tuner coming in 2 weeks
+Drews Tech And Reviews Sounds like our build goals are pretty close haha, upload a video when she's all done! I have truck update coming again in a few days :D
Yeah it seems that way!! I just had a little head start to since I got mine a little before. Do you have a instagram , I can send some pics on the Dm part if you want
The turbo whistle is amazing.
watching this a year later because I finally got a Duramax. I think exhaust is my first mod
I like that it almost sounds like a jet engine with the straight pipe exhaust! 👌
+Luca Car Mods a friend of mine a f-250 that has an aftermarket turbo that sounds like a jet engine but much more define than this duramax even at idle it squeals like a jet
Fix Or Replace Daily
FORD
+LAD Fan ik I hate ford but his truck is awesome
Real good choice in exhaust for all the "off-roading" you'll be doing. Lots of ground clearance.
The power you are feeling is the catless downpipe! Great work, exciting build! Keep it up, Mike!
I love the rumble at low RPM and the higher RPM sound is amazing! The turbo whistle is fantastic! Well Done Mike!
If I were you, I would do the lift and tires next and then see if you still want to do the engine mods with the new driving dynamic that the truck has.
+Curtis Hickerson if I were you.. I'd do the tune first then do the tires/lift if you still want to with the new driving dynamic lol.
no. re gearing the axles
+lamar jamar *no one without a kiddie brain
Would love to see this truck fixed up, lowered with 20x12s, and making 1000hp. Racing urus’s
I don't why but I enjoy these truck videos more than your Hellcat videos and I LOVE the hellcat..keep up the amazing content bro!
+Shehryar Ehtesham haha thanks man!
I can tell this truck has a ton of potential and will look really good when its finished. A great truck to build/
I've never been so happy to see another update video for your truck lol
Have been watching this channel for about a year love your work man keep it up 👍🏻
I loved the corvette, and love the hellcat but the truck videos have me wanting more! Keep it up man!
Love how you're documenting the mods! Brother was thinking about getting an exhaust for his 05 LLY and this might encourage him to do it
+Mark Schaefer thanks man! have him follow my build haha I'm hoping it becomes a good guide for people once it's all done!
+Street Speed 717 Do you notice very much more in-cab noise over stock?
Coming from a guy who has an LLY and knows numerous other Duramax owners and performance shop mechanics and owners, I'd say yea do your wheels and tires for looks, but for performance, do the turbo mouth piece because the stock one is extremely restrictive (I'd recommend and s&b or a LBZ). Forgot to mention head studs. But that isn't a cheap bill, so might as well built the whole motor while the cab is off 😂
This... Tuned by kory Willis or Idaho rob
+Derrick Howard Thank you for being the first person on here to actually know what they're talking about. I've got an 04.5.
+Derrick Howard You're gonna love my next update video coming in a few days :)
It's not your mind playing tricks. You just free'd up a bunch of back pressure in the truck which in turn helps the turbo spool up faster.
the 5" also lowered velocity though so may not be the power gains a 4" would offer. low bp + high velocity = better power.
but, when he puts a tune on it + whatever else he wants it'll probably be best. it's gonna sound great, look good and off road well.
+Kevin Kanzler The 4 or 5 will not make a single difference. The turbo has a very restricted down pipe on the Duramaxs. Only difference is sound.
+Kevin Kanzler Exhaust velocity doesn't make a difference post turbo . You want as little restriction as possible after turbo . Just because you want maximum pressure difference to get the exhaust turbine spinning as quick as possible
Changed a lot in a year
cant beat the sound of the VVT turbos on the 04.5+ duramaxes
The Duramax sounds great with the new setup! I am new to the channel, and your videos are great!
The content, production quality and editing in your videos are really improving! Great video!
I purchased an 05 lly crew cab in silver birch back in August. I already did a 4" MBRP exhaust, egr delete and the lbz intake mouthpiece, all of which were very straightforward. Crazy that I now have a lly and have been looking for exhaust clips for a 5 inch and I remember watching the video when it came out lol
I got the same exact system on my cummins without the tip and I feel more power than before! It's Badass!
+Anthony Johnson Nice! Buddy just got the same for his 04 5.9 I hope to have a video for s sound comparison soon!
+Street Speed 717 That's gonna be bad ass!
+Street Speed 717 Mines a 01 5.9 24v, the older ones sound great up until the 4th gen with the emissions bs.
Loving the build so far. I would recommend the lift/wheel tire install before the tuning and intake just to make sure everything is tuned perfectly for the truck. Exhaust sounds amazing as well. Don't need to pull the crossmember to get the cat pipe out. Remove the hanger that's bolted to trans (2 13mm) and it'll come right out towards the front of the truck.
Man that's a clean looking truck on the underside, I have a 01' same config but with the 6.0 and I wish she was as that free as yours!
+nathan harland benefit of only 13k original miles :)
+Street Speed 717 Ohh my goodness! I bought the truck new in 03 and right now she has over 350k miles, still whoops most trucks out there
I met Martin Barkey (owner of mbrp) at a imsa race once. He drives a really cool Camaro and it sounds amazing
I have the same system on my LB7 but I cut the tail pipe short to make it an axle dump. The echo of the exhaust off the ground makes it so much louder.
Intake exhaust tuning. Makes the truck a lot more fun.
No efi live makes it more fun lol
glad to see man you've reached 45 k subs keep up the hard work
"I don't like when you see a gigant tip sticking out" Said the man with the 7" tip :)
I think a grill would look great on your truck!
Finally. ;)
Thinking about making a youtube channel for my f150 ecoboost.
if it is not a raptor no one will care
+Swaff Corps (Theswaff699) I might care...
+tstraw48 Boom. 1 Sub. haha.
Oh too bad you didn't buy a a 5.0 or 6.2 v8
Dodge 318 Cummins Didn't want one.
I did race a raptor though. Not as fast as my eco lol
If you haven't yet you should look at a cognito lift with bmf wheels wrapped with toyo mt's 35 12.50 R20 that would look awesome!
Man that sounds awesome almost makes me want to get a diesel
Best Mod, definitely doing that on my 2002 Duramax !!

If you take the passenger side wheel well out the clamp is right there takes 5 mins 😂
+Ryan Driedger Yep noticed that afterwards lol
This truck sounds amazing

I still cant get over it only has 13k miles on it!! One hell of a find!!
I know right. I'm so jellyyyy. But I can't wait to see what he does. I like his taste in vehicles.
If you're considering doing an undercoating, I'd recommend some mud flaps as a much better value and better functioning vehicle condition protector.
I approve of the exhaust choice
lol it went from sounding like a school bus to a garbage truck 😂. sounds awesome though
+ninecool11 Like a fast garbage truck ;)
+Street Speed 717 are you ever going to tune the truck
+Merica lover Patterson He said he would.
Nice video Mike. I love all your videos!!! Keep it up!
Exhaust will boost performance in a diesel be chase of the fact you can more more air and and the temp runs cooler
I think the truck looks great just the way it is! But what do I know, I'm a keep it stock and simple king of guy.
I think this set up with a slight 100hp tune will be perfect for my black bison 🤞🏾🤔🦬🦬
Nice job! The turbo whistling comes much more to live now! How is it in US - can you do just any degree of loudness without getting trouble? Here everything is really strict. another great video keep the truck updates coming !
I have that same set-up on my LBZ with a 6" stainless tip. You should also see a 1-2 mpg increase on the highway.
I can't find a 5" straight pipe from the down pipe back for my lbz it's an 06 deleted but you can't find a kit for no cats for that year
Awesome man loving the truck so far! This is really random but is there any way you can make more videos on investing?
am I seeing this correctly that this thing only has thirteen thousand some odd mileage?!?! thing sounds amazing, I absolutely love this body style, probably one of my all time favorite body styles.. can't beat the sound of a duramax when it comes to diesel trucks imo
+Alex Diel yep! It was a pretty rare find haha
Nice dude it sounds good. getting the MBRP system for my 15 colorado next week.
+snooplikesbacon Nice upload a video of it I'd love to hear what they sound like!
You can get a short bed single cab duramax the fishing club near me has for for plowing roads on the ice
+George Sprangers hmm did not know that!
SS717 the type of guy to buy a Bugatti and trade it back in a month later.
And get his hellcat back from the Bugatti place
+Preciƨe Vids Maybe someday ;)
Bugatti is an ugly car
Man thats a clean under body.
Gotta give you some good advice, if you plan on doing a lift sometime, DEFINITELY go with McGaughy's 7 inch lift and 36 inch tires, 20x14 Fuel Maverick wheels would look SICK on that truck. Cool video, and Love the Dmax
+LeveledLariat Update on wheels and tires has been posted :)
Very nice choice! Going to look awesome
i have a 2004.5 lly iv had for about 6 years efi live and all that bullshit i did alot of work to it years ago ...I made a custom 4 inch strait pipe for her that comes out in front of the right rear tire for about $40 bucks and sounds better than any full run exhaust plus I think it looks cooler ....wish i would of said somthing about it before im sure you would Dig it > Nice Job thou Mike
Just found your channel - glad I did, great content! Look forward to your future videos (:
+Dominic Bradley Thank you kind sir!
Down pipe clamps are always a bitch! Even on my bmw it was a pain. Good updates dude. You're slowly making me desire a duramax and I don't even own a truck!
+Brandon B Glad to hear it haha you'd have fun!
definitely like the new kit sounds awesome
+chris lucy Thanks!
How to take your truck to the garage and explain what they done to it. Awesome
The turbo/engine is breathing better. Less restricting
Might be a dumb question but once you drop the catalytic converter, doesn't that make the truck not meet emissions? I might just be dumb but I thought that would make it fail inspection.
***** I live in PA lol. I've just never owned a truck and put an aftermarket exhaust on it so I wouldn't know.
+Ryan Lynch medium duty trucks in the states of delaware and pennsylvania do not require a catalytic converter.
+brandon armstrong no you are wrong the only trucks except from emissions if they are 25 years old if gas. Diesels don't have to take emission test if they are >2010
+Dodge 318 Cummins ok.
+TheXenon get lost
the reason it has more power is because on diesels because of the turbo the more open the flow it the better performance you will get.
i did mine 4in straight pipe by myself in 4 hours 2 hours of getting pissed of and 2 hours after i stopped and though about how to do it hang it then tighten it. by the way it dose give it better bottom end power just for the fact the motor can breath better
How could a 5 inch exhaust fit into/onto a 3 and a half inch turbo down pipe
Haven't watched it yet but damn thats gonna be loud. Will it fit on my Miata? lol
+Gingium were gunna need a built vs bought on this...
Bubba Junior LOL I should do a built or bought with a truck!
+Gingium lol 5 inch pipe on a miata would look perfect!
Street Speed 717 I can guarantee it wont fit lol, but a 5 in tip might actually be decent?
Get a ranch hand front bumper/grill combo and a ranch hand rear bumper. Make it look hella. Or get an Iron Cross, Iron Cross is ORGASMIC
5 inch pipes allow the vehicle to breath better. giving better are flow and passably even better millage. bigger pips will effect sound making the vehicle louder but honestly to me thats is a good thing lol.
Another great video, you might want to considering the license plates of the vehicles when you film..
Also, it can lower your EGT levels.
it would be so sick if you did a video on that subaru he built!!
+dr.braydez hoping to soon!
Sounds like a beast
freaking love these videos
Egr delete and efi live👌🏿 tuning is better done sooner than later cause at any time it can throw that engine code and put the engine in limp mode but seriously nice truck sounds good can't wait to see how it turns out
+Braden Moye yep I actually had it checked, there is an egr code and a turbo underboost code in there, so tuning will be happening very soon haha
Should get EFI live installed next on it, that would be your best tune for a duramax
Kool man, can't wait till the next update 👍😆
3 inch downpipe will increase whistle and spool up, you NEED the LBZ mouth piece, those 2 things should be bin on your list
+Kevin Rogers video coming soon ;)
Street Speed 717 why did you get rid of the exhaust?? Or why did you cut it off underneath the truck? Did you do a video on it? I may have missed it.
Looking and sounding good man!!
this model chevy duramax is definetly my favorite trucks, but in my opinion theres nothing that sounds better then a straight 6 cummins.
Sounds awesome. Not that it matters, but you'll lose a little bit of low end power by increasing the diameter of the exhaust (reduces exhaust gas velocity which reduces the scavenging effect).
Sounds great!
+AimlessMoto Thanks!
+Street Speed 717 when u gonna roll coal
7 inch tip! Holy shiz! Careful the bulldogs don't get stuck in there!
Hey what do u do with straight pipes cars when u bring it in to inspection in pa?
You should get the 3" mbrp downpipe
It sounds even louder now than this video, is it still the same exhaust or has there been more changes since?
Cheers from Shippensburg.
Won't taking the cross members off like that affect the structural trueness of the frame??
+Alex Huan They went back in after of course! lol
Straight pipes on diesels is night and day difference
Was the truck tuned before the install of this exhaust kit
Are you going to put on the LBZ inlet horn and Y bridge? There a must have on a LLY
+Paul Driver Driver Property Services LLC update tmrw!
