- Hey everyone, this is a quick video to show you how to set up an RO system using most spigots or 1/4” faucet. This is for those of you who need water for a garden or maybe filling up water jugs for drinking. Under the sink installation is just not needed for some of us! Hope this video helps!
Remember that water is different around the world. You might have great tap water to start. For reference.
My water from the tap is!
450+ PPM / 7.5 Ph
After filtering
1 PPM / 7.0 Ph
For me filtering my water is crucial for soil health.

The Adapter I'm using : www.bulkreefsu...
They do offer a 3/8" adapter as well.
This is the RO System : www.amazon.com...
Simple and quick. Thanks!
Thanks for the lack of mumbo-jumbo....refreshingly to the point.
Very helpful, thank you!
Forgot to comment last time. Had to come back to the video to rebuy the piece my dog just chewed. This is the best thing ever. Fill up all of my 5 gallon jugs for my plants. Best idea ever thanks a lot!
awesome video... we're renting too, and have an alkaline water machine that requires reverse osmosis due to our water softener system here. Excited to get this setup tomorrow on our patio
Water is one of my favorite beverages, excellent explanation of where it comes from
Same here! My family even my pups drink fresh water. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! It is appreciated. :)

Thanks for sharing this, sometimes people need to SEE how a product works to see if it works for them. I kept searching online for what the hell to do with the storage container and sink and i just realized YOU DONT NEEEED it... its included but it just got confusing lol. Thanks for sharing this and allowing me to see I can just get this and use it anywhere if im just filling up a large bucket.
CHEERS
well I think the container is pressurized somehow. And its made to store the water as a reservoir when you want instant access to drink. The reason its pressurized is because RO reacts to air, and if you leave it out long enough the water PH drops from 7 to 4, or something like that. And it becomes acidic. Im currently looking at systems now for my garden im going to start. And trying to figure out how to store the RO water without exposing it to air. Im thinking you might have to put it in some 5 gallon water jug and pump out the air somehow. Im not sure.
Thanks for this ! Mine came with a tank and I was like do I need the tank ?? Thanks again man! Cheers!
wow thanks Im gonna use this to extract pure water and adding a Di tank will even be better ! Appreciate the vid man
Good looking out happy growing🫡🌱✅
thank you so much i needed it for my fish tanks but didn’t want to screw stuff so this worked with my sink
Thank you, straight to the point.
As I watched this you gave me an idea for another non permanent solution that could also work indoors ... get a Y adapter and you can plug it into the washing machine connection!
Thanks for the info about the mur-lok adapters!
Thanks for dropping a comment! Appreciate it, yah the adapter is what made it all work and the part I couldn’t find for awhile lmao. Glad it’s working out for you and hope your project turned out !
Thats how i have my ro buddie setup works great
@ DjScreaM514 - That's exactly what I came up with... just hooked my RO to a "Y" adapter on the washing machine water spigot... super simple and out of the way. Makes it that much easier to pull the system when it comes time to sell one's home or move out of an apartment + there's the added bonus of easier cartridge changes and saving cabinet space!
Las Vegas, NV: Thanks for mentioning this!
Brilliant thanks. Amazing how so little information is out there on how to do this.
Plus the info you do find is typically contradicting. The confusion is intentional. This video was the best I’ve seen. This should bring the tds down enough for cleaning too. Those DI systems are sweet but you’ll burn thru resin without pre filtering it.
No problem! Glad I could help :)
It seems like it’s helped at least a handful. Didn’t think anyone would even see this video.
Thanks for the comment!
2:06 wow i use glass and to avoid bpa and plastics but i never thought of this thanks!
finally someone who knows what i want to do i figured it should be fairly simple compared to inhouse plumbing and all the issues with that.
i need to do this for my 125g reef tho so i'm thinking i will cover my system with a black cloth or something so i don't get since the first time around i will have to run it for a day or so after that i think it should be fine apart from summer season.
i'm thinking of using the "waste" water for my freshwater water changes if the water changes lineup i don't expect to do alot of water changes for reef tank unlike my freshwater tank but i expect to do top off water.
great idea on using bpa free hose i'll add that to my list.
Thanks for the comment and love man. Sounds like a good plan. That’s how I figured it by the way, much simpler in a rented house to do this. I fill five gallon jugs and a drum to water my garden. Works great!
Thanks again! And have fun with your reef!
Exactly what I needed thanks man
Glad it’s still helping people. Thanks for the love. :)
Las Vegas, NV: Thanks so much! We want to use the RO water to fill our 55 gal., long-term water storage drum for emergency use (we keep it in a spare bedroom since it's too hot in the garage or outside). I'll also use the 5 year water preservative but figured we may as well use the RO water from under the kitchen sink. It appears I'll need to find an adapter to go between the RO blue hose to the large-hose adapter since I need it to be a female, not a male like yours because I want to use the hose's female end for an on/off nozzle.
Dude you're awesome. Thanks!
Excellent video, thanks!
Thank you!! I tried to find an outdoor RO set up last year but couldn't find any info. I even asked a retailer that sells RO units, they said it wasn't possible..clearly, it's very simple though! Even better would be to find a way to fill a barrel and using a float valve to stop the flow of water, so you don't have to wait around for it to finish filling.
You can def set this up with a float valve! I just don’t because it doesn’t fit my uses. I may in the future for sure. And thank you for the comment, glad it helped anybody ! I don’t know why there is so little info about it .
@@EtherealoNe1 great video sir! I’m assuming the water flow is very slow. Would this be a good solution for washing my black car or would it be too slow? I’m getting hard water spots all over it so I’m hoping there’s a way to wash my car with a system like this
@@richardnixon9324 So to do this for something like that you would need to fill a reservoir and get a sprayer with a pump. You totally could get 50 gallons of clean water in an afternoon though. Take a look at different RO systems, some are high flow and more suited for what you need. You need to clean a vehicle, it won't need to be 0ppm deionized or anyhting like that. Look for a 2-3 stage, ( hydro logic or aquatic life ) would suit you well. Thanks for stopping by with the love and comment!
@@EtherealoNe1 thanks for your reply sir
@@richardnixon9324 I would check out the in hose filter called Boogie Blue. It filters 35,000 gallons. It was originally for the garden, but many people use it on their cars and it's cheap for that. Easy too. Just twist it on the hose with an adapter and use.
Excellent. Thank-you!
Thanks for the video =)
thanks ima do this
The inlet for the filtration system we are using is 1/2". Any recommendations on where i can find a 1/2 garden hose utility adapter??
I tried to look through the comments and your description but I didn't see this would you please send a link for your water hose? Thank you so much. Blessings. When I looked at Amazon, it shows 5/8 drinking water hose?
Ah I didn’t add a link >.
Thanks, man. This helped a lot.
No problem man, glad to hear it. Thanks for the love.
Thanks
Legend thanks
Glad it helped! Happy holidays 🤙
Have you broken down a cost per gallon not including the initial set up? Is the filter replacement worth the cost? Walmart has 29 cents per gallon in 2023 prices. My use would be for drinking and my gardening. My coffee maker would be most appreciative too.
My water bill barely moved so I never calculated it. For me it’s convenience. I don’t have to go lug 6, 5 gallon jugs back and forth from home to store
Thanks buddy, same here didn’t want to fit under my sink.
in the instructions for the filter there is one hose that goes to the tank and one hose that goes to the faucet.. it looks like you connected your clean water hose to the output hole for the faucet.
I see a little bit of leaking from the output for the tank and I'm wondering if I should've put the clean water hose on the other output hole.
Any thoughts on the minor leaking?
Good, I like MY well water scaley but my plants don't and I needed a solution.
Thanks!! Are you still loving your system?
Hey, thanks for the comment :) I am actually, 2 years later I still use it. I don’t use it as much for drinking water but I do use it for fresh water for the dogs, for humidifiers, pretty much anything that could use clean water. I just don’t stay up on cleaning the jugs so I’ve been buying water from Costco haha but the dogs aren’t as picky as us and the waters still great, the 5 gal bottles get a good rinse here and there. All is good, happy new years to you and yours!
Thanks man!
Thank you for this video, I appreciate it. Plants are happy after that I bet, nice. The set up of an RO system for outside gardening seems relatively simple in contrast to installing to sink. I'm a little interested on what is going inside these "Reverse Osmosis" systems, how is the water filtered and what is used in the tanks. Can installing it improperly be dangerous?
Hey thanks for stopping by and commenting, sorry I didn't notice the comment sooner. Yah the plants love the RO versus the nasty tap and it is indeed way easier then under the sink. I recommend looking up how RO works! In a nutshell inside there are a few stages of filters, not much else going on! :) , if you install it improperly there shouldn't be any dangers involved, you could mess your sink up or it may not work. Happy gardening
@@EtherealoNe1 Thanks, I did do some research and found out that water is pushed through a membrane, effectively filtered through many stages as you noted. It is one of the most effective ways of water filteration in combination with other technology, so you're right.. it's just layers of filteration (effective by design) at a different particle size very small as opposed to ultrafiltration and microfilteration.
Please send me the link for the ( murlock adapter )to join garden hose to tubing THANKYOU , ..is it an bought on Amazon website .THANKYOU
Thank you for this.
Thank you for commenting. Good to know some people find it useful. :)
@@EtherealoNe1 I didnt want to dedicate my sink to filling up water buckets for my reef tank every week so this was perfect. thanks again.
How do you like this system now that you have had it for a bit
Thank you I knew I should have looked this up from the beginning.....I've been scratching my head for weeks my houses sink is connected to my washing machine........ yeah...
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, but why not just connect directly to the water spigot?
awesome thanks!
Thanks!
I don’t see the link for the Mur-loc adapter you used. I searched Mur-loc but haven’t found one that looks like yours. Can you please help me out? Thanks!
www.bulkreefsupply.com/mur-lok-garden-hose-utility-sink-adapter.html , no worries. here’s the link for you! Thanks for checking out the video ^_^
for the love of god THANK YOU. You are right. the information isn't out there.
What did you use the plug the tank line? Or if I dot insert the hose will it be closed off?
I want to say mine came with a plug in it already, if not there was for sure one in the box. It was a small yellow plug.
Question so are you running the water out of the hose for an hour straight ?
Yeah I was. Never had a problem.
Can you do this in the winter??
Great question. I live in a desert environment and the coldest it gets is about 30 at night. I would say it probably won’t work if you live in a climate where you have freezing temps for long amounts of time. What you can do though is quickly disconnect it and keep it inside until needed or get an insulated chest/box to put it in. It connects and disconnects as easy as any hose.
it has a line out for faucet and another for tank so do you just cap one off still confused on how to bypass the tank
The tank line might already be capped off. Too bad I didn’t show the yellow cap in the video, good question though.
Where can I buy one of those ( merlock addapters ,)please send me the link ,thanks
Iv unsubscribe as you don’t reply ,
@@DPW55 no problem on the unsubscribe. I’m not a content creator, I made this just to help people and it’s several years old. I don’t keep up with it much.
The link is in my description, as mentioned in the video. If that link doesn’t work I’m not sure where to get it anymore. Hope that helps! Take care and happy growing.
FUCKING THANK YOU
I got a different system and got it hooked up but no water is coming out of clean line. Just a trickle on the tank line. Do I have to hook tank up
How long did you let it run? If it’s set up right, it can take a few minutes to get the water going. Not you shouldn’t have to hook up the tank line, there should be a plug for it.
im about to get the same setup, with the yellow tube you just cap the other end or what?
Yep exactly, it might already be capped, just pay the yellow tube and tank no mind really. Make sure what your do connect makes sense, flow wise. Best wishes.
@@EtherealoNe1 sounds good thanks
can I use to to fill my 1000 gallons pond? its gonna take month to fill up right?
Lol, probably not a month, but it'll take awhile. this isn't for filling a pool or pond.
Hey if you’re still interested you can get a AquaticLife RO from Amazon for 143 bucks come with all the attachments needed and produces 200 GPD (Gallons Per Day) my experiences it was 168 GPD so it’ll take somewhere between 6-12 days to fill 1000 gallons depending on the water pressure. Hope this helps. :)
Do I need too add trace minerals to the water for my plants? If so what do you recommend
No, you don't need to, I would recommend not adding them, unless you prefer the taste.
I am confused. I read RO water should not be used for drinking, watering plants, etc UNLESS specific nutrients are added back into it like magnesium, calcium, potassium etc; good minerals the body and plants need. Not only does RO water have poor taste, it doesn't remove chlorine or some other things and so you need a carbon filter, too (salesman told me that). RO water is great for cleaning laundry, dishes, etc, but if using it to remove other contaminants, minerals needed to be added back into it. So why not just filter the water without RO?
Plants get nutrients from soil. They don’t get it from water. Minerals in water are trace and mostly added back for flavor. Humans nor plants get nutrients from water. Yes we need electrolytes but we get those from food.
RO is inefficient but that’s about the only down side. I thought I stated in the video but maybe I haven’t, it’s been awhile. Not all water sources are the same. The water in my city is horrible so even with a regular inline filter it’s still heavily contaminated. Around 400ppm. Some people have water that’s great for drinking and watering plants straight from the tap. Depends where you live.
If a salesman told you something he was probably doing his job… trying to sell. Do your own research. RO does indeed remove chlorine if you have the filter for it. There are many different ro setups. 2 stage, 3 stage, 5 stage etc. the RO part is specifically the membrane filter that doesn’t let basically anything through.
A quick reference for you, rain water has 0-5ppm. Plants love rain water. Clean fresh water is what they need. Good luck
How did you bypass the tank ?
You just don’t connect it and route the hoses through. Intake, waste, clean water. For my system there was a plug already in the tank port on the RO system. I just left it in there and hooked everything else up.
Mine didn't come with a plug in it. You think I should buy a shut off valve for it and keep it off?
@@chriswilliams2945yeah, or just something to plug it.
Dude you sound like Ben Affleck. Lol
That’s too funny man, I get that and Matthew McConaughey all the damn time lmao. Hope the vid helped ya out. 🤙
5 gallon an hour.....daaaaamn that slow when I need at least 65 gal
I hear yah, reverse osmosis isn’t fast unfortunately. Cheers!
