Cant wait for a followup on this one! I have a very similar gollum and it needs pruning but I get scared of cutting so much of it! This is a great video and makes me a little braver😊 Thank you 🥰
I too have a "finger jade" forest and I have 1 that died from not being watered. But from that one i got 10 cuttings. Theres another one that needs a root pruning it's been in a pot for 3 years but I suppose I'll wait until spring. Tomorrow I believe I'll just give it a hard pruning like you did. Many of the plants I have have been because I've seen them on your channel. You inspire me to do these hard prunes Nigel. Of course your a huge inspiration for my collection and pride I put into my bonsai. Thank you as always.
Thanks, It makes me happy to hear you enjoying the hobby and your trees! They really got a hard prune yesterday, I'll have to keep them in a warm sunny spot for recovery!
That was a perfect video Nigel.....instructional, educational, and clear reasoned explanations. I love when you cut a branch, you zoom in, then you explain WHY you're cutting it! This is what we need to know - so many youTubers go to time-lapse and in 30-seconds the whole tree is de-foliated with no explanation of their reasoning or thought process. Outstanding work and my favorite bonsai teacher! √√√

Excellent tutorial. Really an excellent job pruning the jades and the explanation of why you are doing it. This should give people an incentive to make a jade bonsai. Thumbs up.
Wow! There was a thing I read on Facebook that made me giggle.... If you walk into a forest and cut down a tree, but the tree doesn't understand why you cut it down, do you think it's Stumped?
Wow! Really drastic pruning Nigel Sir.But it still looks good without the leaves and you are a master at pruning trees. Can’t wait to see it grow new leaves....

Thanks Jonathon, excellent idea! I just tried Strawberry mint for the first time yesterday, it was really good! Have a great holiday season Jonathon, I'll see you in the new year!
Thank you so much Mr. Nigel for sharing the watering needs of the jade trees. You should share more such information about every tree you work on in your videos, anything pertaining to basic bonsai horticulture. It has helped me out a lot. By the way this is Ujjawal Roy here from India, hope you remember me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on soil mixes for a climate like mine during the meeting. I will try to inculcate all the tips that you suggested for my trees 😊
I kind of want to grow an oak forest. I have three white oak saplings from acorns I collected in October growing in a 7” round pot. I just hope that’s manageable in a pot of that size. Oaks get big. I suppose in a few years, I could try to move them together to a bigger pot. Is there a minimum distance the trees need to be apart when they share a pot?
I agree that some objects like animals or buildings can limit the imagination or even ruin the whole bonsai effect. Less is more. I really enjoy this video! Nice pruning! Cheers!
Goshh, you shrunk them so little in freezing winter time, will they survive & regrow from this? Someimes i feel pity on them 😒😒😒 ~Aniket Regards from India 🙏🙏🙏
Wow I didn't think you would take that much off. This make me was to start with this plant as my first attempt at a Bonsai since it looks hard to mess up.
Hello, thanks for showing us how to prune the lovely Jade plants, my question is : it's winter time now , many plants gone dormant,is it better to prune them when spring comes?
Yes, it's a little too deep, but the extra depth gives the soil good drainage. I'm hoping as the trees develop larger trunks, the pot will eventually look just right! It may take a lot of years.
How long has this been a planting together, and how old is the main tree? Those cuts are a bit horrifying as you say, but I'm sure it'll bounce back quite nicely and look lovely in the future.
Hi Nigel. Great video as always. Question: Is is possible to do this exact operation on a much older jade? I recently took a very old jade into my house that was getting neglected. It's doing much better now but the plant is very leggy. It only has foliage in the very tips of all the branches. Still I like this plant very much because it's so old and has grown into a clump style over the years. However it is very rootbound because it has been sitting in the same pot for over ten years. Any growth I get is very very slow. So it definitely needs a repot and a hard prune to sort out the structure. Would you say to repot first and let it recover before doing a hard prune like this? Or would you make different plans? My goal is to make it look kind of like your schefflera clump style. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with all the hard work. Greetings from The Netherlands.
I think you are OK to hard prune and repot together as long as conditions are good for recovery. I like to do this early summer if possible when the tree is outside and is adapted to sunlight. If the tree is indoors and has a nice warm sunny window, it can be done in winter too. You do have to keep the soil quite dry and just mist the tree until it begins to grow well.
@@marcogiuberto4570 At first I had the same problem, but after first pruning I saw how fast everything grew back and I didnt hesitate anymore. You can even leave it with 0 leaves
Mine had that problem. Soaked the plant with soap water spray twice. Hat gave the jade growth back... and yes they need lots of sun light and very less water.
Sorry i don't fully agree with the comments. I have about 30 Jades (some varieties) in my collection. Everthing from small cuttings to pretty old and massive jades (about 40-50 years old). As long as you use coarse soil that drains well (i only use about 20 % coarse cocofibers at maximum, the rest mineral components) you can achieve everything everywhere (frost excluded). Some grow the whole year on the northside (dark side) on the windows benches inside the house. Some on the south side and in summer in full sun. They all grow well. The only difference is the leave colour. Less sun darker green, full sun light green and red colours. In summer i water the Jades outside everyday just like my other Bonsai. Due to the substrate they never get overwatered and grow like crazy. In winter (inside the house) they get water every week, and they also grow like crazy. Even when i prune or rootprune them I water them as usual. Sure they don't grow like an acer (you can never expect that). But for Jades it is amazing. So never use blacksoil. It stays too wet. It's all about the substrate. When you want healthy and vigorous trees, Jades or any other species, it's all about the substrate. Bonsai is so easy if you understand that one thing. Just my two cents.
Nicely done! The structure looks great! You are right...have to look past chopping all the green off. Only question is....does it matter that you did it in winter? Wouldn’t February or March have been better when spring growth starts? Isn’t it resting right now? Or doesn’t it matter with grow lights?
They have been kept quite cool in the outdoor greenhouse and should be ready to grow with the warmer indoor temperatures. I'll keep it by the window to give it good light for recovery. Hopefully all will go well!
I have a few that are between 20 and 40+ years old and although they are fairly happy with their location but they've only flowered maybe two that I can remember. Good on him.

I don't believe u just pruned that forest to such an extent, just amazing work 🌳 the jade with flowers is looking suppperb👍

It was a severe pruning, but the trees are really healthy and if I keep them in a sunny warm spot, they should recover quickly!
A severe pruning for sure Chris!

I have experienced that when you hard prune them and they redone leaves, they needs some strong watering?...
The flowers look really cool on the jade.
21F. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Hot tea weather. The sand gives the jade a nice desert type look.
Hi Nigel. We call the variety with the elongated leaves "Shrek's Ears" or "Ogre's Ears" in South africa. Now you will never be able to unsee it 😁
I've heard them called that, they do look like Ogre ears! Thanks!

It has to be kept warm and in a nice bright spot until it recovers. Too much water will kill it!

Thanks Charles, quite a pruning they got!
Wtf where do u live where it’s -6 degrees? The Arctic?
He's in the southern part of Canada, - 6 Celsius so 22 degrees farenheit.
I thought the Ovata variety had the flat round leaves.

Hi Nigel, can you prune jades back to the trunk like that? Won't the tree decide to abandon branches without leaves?
See where the lines are and cut above them to get no die back, but do that in growing season to get best results
Yes, I'll need to keep the Jade stumps in a warm bright location until the new growth begins to come in!
I'm always doubting myself when pruning, as well as root pruning. Need to be braver hahaha.

That crassula looks great. Mine seems to not be growing. Even during the growing season. How can I encourage more growth?
They need a lot of light, if it is too dark they will just remain dormant.

Can I wire jade? One of mine fell while I was away and it started to bend the branches sideways and I don't know how to correct that
Yes, they can be bent a little bit. Wire is useful to position branches slightly, but you can't make radical bends like you can on a Juniper!
Here is a cool way to hold the branches instagram.com/p/CG7O4k0l9vU/
Thanks I grow these a lot.
Hopefully it will recover well, I'll keep my fingers crossed!
