The best channel for camera and lens knowledge. I surfed million different places to make decision, you just make it simple and reasonable. Thanks a Bunch sir! I have been torn apart between Canon and Nikon for the reason of shooting video as well, as I plan to make small little not very hyper professional grade videos with my friends playing/jamming. I have come to realization that getting a Nikon gear and a separate gear for video all together is the way to go. Specially I live in Finland, most part of the year is dark here. High ISO performance is must, which any canon in my range at-least does not offer. In a heart beat I would go for D7100 but the video capabilities are holding me back. I can stretch upto around 1200 dollars/euro for the body. Or is d750 worth the stretch out for, given its video capabilities are good enough. At times I do would like to play and sing and shoot alone also, therefore the af in video is important to me. Would you recommend D7100 and a separate gear for video or any other body. It do would be sweet to have single gear then I won't have to invest for lenses just for videos. I am starting out and mainly I am aiming for landscape, street and dogs/wildlife photography. As I keep travelling to Nepal quiet a lot. I must say Nepal is very sweet and easy place for wildlife photography in terms of Access.
+Theoria Apophasis Thank you! Just spent a 'lens' worth of amount for the liquid fire last night with friends. Winter is round the corner, its either high ISO or vision blurring liquids here :D
David Duong not a thing, however (Despite its lovely LACK of a AA filter) given that a new D750 is SAME price as a D800, id recommend folks snag one as a first camera rather than used without warranty D800 when prices change, recommendations must change too. Love the D800, used to own one :)
Hi From England. First of all may I say many thanks for all the fantastic videos. They are very much appreciated! OK, so here is my thing. I am a amateur photographer who has enjoyed photography all my life. Last year after saving long and hard I decided to purchase my first decent camera, the Nikon D750. As you can imagine I love it. However it is currently in for repair and during this time I have been thinking that maybe I should start thinking about buying a back up camera. Now my problem is what to buy. Any advice? (Oh I shoot anything and everything . . sorry but I just love photography!) Kind regards Adam P.S. It doesn't need to have video recording capabilities.
+Congenic_Images on what budget? shoot everything ehhh...........the best "cheap" deal would be a D3 or D700 ($1000 for D3 and about $600 for D700) best budget DX would be a refurb as new D7100 for $500 USD :)
Many thanks for quick response. I guess my budget would be about £800 (I believe that is around $1100) One of my other concerns was whether to stick with FX or could having a quality DX have its benefits? Thanks
it has its benefits really for birders and wildlife, since there are MORE photosites per square mm on a DX sensor, since birders crop the crap out of their pics and theres more INFO there than on a FX sensor. Otherwise no, not really. ever handled a D3???? drools. Ive got 3 of em :) but hey, its an OLD camera Hahahhahah, i got a great used one a month ago for $50 Fooking hell ehh!!!!! my dad got it......steal of a lifetime $50 damn bucks
Whoa $50! Now that sounds like my kind of deal. (Actually I am sure most people would like that kind of deal Ha Ha) Many thanks once again for taking the time to answer my comment. So since I have read your reply I have been researching further. Not 100% sure yet which one I will go with, but I have decided it will be either the D3 or D700. ;-)
HatsuneMikuCanada i havent used Leicas in ages, and cannot make a logical comment on same. Well, i take that back, i did a few years ago, but that was just a weekend.
Funny that the Z model line when ever they do perfective the models that the DSLR line as prices are coming down, BUT they are still made in JAPAN as the Z models are or will be made in Thailand... Think About it Nikon - There goes your profit sharing program for your Nikon Employees... Should stick to the 35mm Rangefinder line, and Beat Leitz....
Well it's nice to know my last two Nikon bodies have been your top pick. First was the D7100 which is a fantastic camera for the money and can't be beat for sub $1000. Then I stepped up to the D810 as I had the money, and even had my choice to get a D4s and I would not trade my D810 for a D4s. The D810 is just a beast of a camera, and people who bitch about ISO on it, I just shot a play in nearly blacked out theater at 6400 and was able to push them in post to where I got my 10th straight top of the fold newspaper front page. But that's just my opinion as I always shoot my D810 about a 1/3 to a 1/2 under because of how much latitude you have in post.
The Nikon 24-70 is my most used, but I also use the Tamron 70-200 for portraits and events like that play. And then other then that is all my specialties, well actually the 50mm may seem routine but due to the 24-70 being so damn good I only use it for shallow dof so it's in my specialty category, lol
well, my beloved 24 70 2.8 is on my D810 most of the time, but its 50mm cant come close to any of my countless 50s. :) snag a 50mm F1.2 and see that RAZOR THIN DOF ! impossible to handhold a sharp shot. (pretty much)
Theoria Apophasis Ya, fortunately the photographic instructor at the college I am at is a major Nikon repository like yourself and has trust in me to not only borrow gear, but have full access to the entire lab and equipment that the college has even though I'm not a photography student (Art History, going for my MFA). I'm gonna be taking out an old 4x5 here in the next few weeks that the college has had collecting dust, and they have 25 or so Nikon FM's that they loan to students for film purposes which is awesome that they went with Nikon, because like I said they have some choice Nikon gear that nobody but the instructor and myself knows is good. We even found a Minty as you say, Nikon 105mm f/2.5 that I was so stoked over as I knew that the 105mm 5 element Nikon was legendary for it's design and execution.
Also curious AP/Ken the grey market 750 for around 1630.00 or so would you say or guess? how would we know so to speak if we are getting the 750 that now has been re~adjusted? by Nikon
stinger1956 yes, 1600+ there is a serial number on same, and a mark inside the base of the tripod hole ,.....theyre just gray market NEW ones, not "older ones with the design flaw" :)
Hey Bro, Great video. I have been shooting everyday for the last 4 years! I stated with a D200 witch I love. I still use it now. I now use a D300s for work everyday. Now I want to go solo and want to get a full frame camera. I know how to use a Nikon inside and out. My only problem is I don't need 36mpix to much processing I feel like you need a brand new computer to compliment the D810. So I have really been looking at the D750 I love it, BUT Not in love with it. Do you think the D750 is right? I know its a silly question but i just want to buy a camera that's is going to last for at least 3 years. Thanks man!!
Jonathan Burgos The question is also whats your budget and what do you shoot MOST? for $700, the D700 is the absolute best value, but many intro shooters would not consider thinking its "dated", but thats not the case. Im doing a video on the D750 again tonight along with all other best cameras in diff. price categories the MOST for the $$$ is a used D7000 for $360+ minty used :)
Thanks for your many videos, man. But one question goes on: if you have no issue with money and just wants great pictures (don't usually print), would you get the D810 or the D750? Can't check for myself (the #$#@%#%$ country I live in has NO good retail hands-on to test the cameras and no rental either!). After all, do the IQ of the D750 really matches the D810 at low ISO's?
gustavo campos money no issue? D810, there is no contest there. Oh no, the D810 is the winner, but were talking also about $1600 vs. $2600 (lowest cost new D810)
Theoria Apophasis Thanks. I value your opinion... :) I set aside 8.500 euros to buy my new gear, so 1k more or less is not a major problem, but I want something to last at least 4 or 5 years (the camera, of course) before I have to think about upgrading. What about glass? I've been watching many of your videos and surely enough many primes are in my list (one of my issues with my current gear - Sony - is exactly this one: lack of good gear for the money, especially primes - that Zeiss lenses are great, but I think it's way too expensive when you compare it to Nikon's, or Canon's for that matter, equivalent). Although you don't value VR, I shoot a lot inside old churches and buildings where tripods or monopods are not allowed, so my zoon lenses will have to have VR, hence 2 Tamron are in my list (the 15-30mm 2.8 and the 24-70mm 2.8)... Thanks again for your insight.
Ohhh i do value VR for many things, just not to let it be a crutch. Im all for VR really. some people got that impression from me. have you seen my video "if you only had $1500 to spend on ALL your FX lenses" ? hey, ask me anything about any possible lens you might be looking at !
Theoria Apophasis Yep, I've seen that video, yes. Well, since you're offering, I'm taking it! :) I intend to get the Tamron 15-30 2.8 OR the Nikon 16-35 4.0 (less bulky, although a bit slower), a nifty-50 1.8 (I prefer a D over the G), a 85 1.8 and if I get the 16-35 4.0 I'll get the 35 1.8 Nikon or the Sigma 35 1.4; then the 70-200 4.0 Nikon and a Nikon 105 micro or the famous Tokina 100mm for macro work. As a walk around lens, I thinking about the 50mm 1.8 above or the Tamron 24-70 VR 2.8. Good choices? :)
Theoria Apophasis I forgot to mention... will your selection of lenses in the video you mentioned be ok with the d810? Many reviews I've read bash some of those lenses... and since I'm a complete newbee to Nikon, I'm sort of afraid. :) One of the downsides to live in a small, periferical country is that there's not a Craig's list or even Ebay here... I'd have to buy from England and would not be able to test used lenses beforehand...
Got a d810 with a 24-85 non vr version, and the images are not sharp, im doubting the lens cause it's used but im worried that it's the body af, what do you think ken ?
Person 19 www.ebay.com/itm/Lens-Hood-for-Nikon-AF-Nikkor-80-200mm-f-2-8D-ED-Lens-replaces-HB7-HB-7-II-e113-/121626873937?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c5186d051
Thanks I will look out for the tokina and search if someone has a 80-200, because I live in Panama and most of the people that has that lens will never leave it. 👍👍
Hi man I will buy a nikon d7200, and... Im looking for some lenses for weddings; I have already decide to buy the 105mm Mricro vr because of its multipurpose. I think that the 18-140 is still ok for wide angle and midrange. BUTT. what do you think about a telephoto for less than 850 bucks.
Jean Pierre Remón The Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro / Portrait is a BETTER choice at $380 vs. $1000 for the Nikkor 105mm !! (yes, ive owned both, still have 2 of the Tokinas) that saves you $600 right there. 18 140 is not a good lens choice, rather grab the 18-200 however for LESS ($230+ mint used Ebay), the 24-85 VR G Nikkor is a better still choice. for less than $850, EASY ANSWER!!! and it should be called "the wedding lens",...thats the CURRENT 80-200 F2.8 D AF Nikkor.
***** the 105mm Nikkor macro is great, and it has VR, however its construction is weak, and has too much distortion. The Tokina 100mm 2.8 is $600 less, and produces better image and made far far better. Were both pretty much on the same page, no use splitting hairs. :)
Thanks a lot both I've used the Tokina and it's great but I hate that it's not IF. However Amazon has the Nikkor 105 for 800 and in Panama is about 1200, and it's amazing for Macro and portraits in the case of a wedding you won't want to be changing lenses every time. Thanks both for your comments!!!!!
Jean Pierre Remón well, most macro lenses ARENT, so thats no big deal, it also is pure silk to AF, and not a pain like most are. The Nikkor 105 is a most certain "WORST VALUE" Nikkor lens.
Theoria Apophasis Indeed. I purchased a brand new 105 VR and I was utterly disappointed. Sold it. I own Nikon 105 f/2 DC (AF) and Nikon 105 f/2.5 ais. Both are class and stuns you with every picture. In my view the f/2 DC is the best 105 lens made by any brand ever- 105 f/2.5 ais is as good but it is manual and sometimes it is important to have AF.
I would like to point out that the D7000 can be had for $500 or less. Why would anyone buy a D3XXX or D5XXX series camera when a camera that is as versatile as the D7000 is that affordable?
181666579129 does not come up in an ebay search !!! you sure thats it???? I THINK maybe i did sell those, but ive only sold like 4 lenses in the ENTIRE past year!!
i agree, but the 500 is very tempting. but serious question. i have been saving for an upgrade and recently got to where i need to be to buy what i had planed on picking up (the 810) should i wait for the next release? how much longer do you think it will be??
Uh, when I can get a d7200 and a d600 for the same price, I'll take the one that has the bigger sensor for landscapes. In a twisted sense, all the bad copies of the d600 are a blessing for those who get a good one, since it may have adversely affected the perceived value and therefore price of the camera. And please do at least one more "Ken Rockwell is crazy" video, if you're the angry photographer (Ken) , he should be the insane photographer (Ken). Thanks for all the pounds useful info. too.

Dude, I can't believe you are making fun of Kay from DigitalRev yet you are not aware of the new Nikon D5, at least if you are going to make fun of someone have some more insight on what that channel really is. You mocked him up, yet they do say something I've never, ever heard you say on any of your videos: it's more important who's behind the camera than the camera itself. 80-90% of your videos are talking about gear, yet you mock "gear-whores". There's very few videos on your channel or at least recent ones about how to master light in fact, and other relevant topics. It almost feels as if you are not doing what you preach, and you are only focusing on the tech specs, chromatic aberration, barrel distortion, bla bla bla... You say this lens or that lens with this or that body, what beautiful combination, bla bla bla, yet you almost never, ever put an actual photograph taken by you with the gear you recommend. So summing up, yeah, before making fun of other channels you do need to step up your game, do some video editing, it's not that hard, if FroKnows can do it, why don't you?
zethiel I know about the D5, i mentioned same. did you mean Kai? I like his funny videos. however he knows very little about photography Gear? Yes, ....photography? NO. Actually, i have quite a lot of videos on composition, etc, and have about 40+ MORE videos on same to add. Pardon, but Kai's videos on gear are about 95% or higher. No, i say "its all about the SHOT" not the gear. Im my own person, if you like their videos better, then you shouldnt watch mine.
Great advice as always. See Chuck's recent video, like you he speaks the truth and for most the truth hurts. Perhaps we may see an impersonation of Chuck, if appropriate, sock puppet with bandana and all, tastefully done of cause. Don't mean any disrespect. You two are awesome.
John Valatos well, these 2 videos will surely PISS some people off, but its a logical statement, that "hey, in XXXX price range, this is the best bang for your buck" or some people will "read" it wrong, .......
Cloudzard Host Ohhhh now, dont go depressing me!!!!!! heheeh!!! Honestly, dont make me feel like i just stole someones hot apple pie or something!! heheehhhe
*hugs my D3300 tightly* It's ok 3300 I still love you =,( Plus I consider it a way of training my abbilities with lame as limited lens haha (just wait for me D750!! ;O )
Flash forward 8 years to 2023: I just got a D810 for under $600. It has less than 40,000 clicks.
I really enjoy your videos. Will send a donation when I buy my first used prime. Love the thinking. Keep up the good work.
For €400 is a d3 for bacup a good deal?

D750 is the dark master . hugs :P Keep warm and dont drink too much liquid fire!!

HatsuneMikuCanada just remember it called lecia 35mm f1.4 ASPH Summlix-M

get insurance on it after you buy it from your local insurance folks.

d600/d610, oil issues? How come Nikon isn't fixing this?
cheatopher D610 was supposed to fix the issue, but it didnt really do same.
they did "fix" it, they stopped making the D600
I see. I check reviews and saw the same problems is still occurring. I guess d700/d750 instead!
yes, i have no real love for 600 or 610 for many reasons :)
Do you do reviews of images or website of or for beginners?
AdiosKappa yes, but i dont like doing any criticisms of anyones beloved work, ...i dont like doing what my photography professors did to me!! hehehe!!
any good grey market online places in Europe?
+KeithCanisius i dont know about europe
Yess in the Netherlands, its colt Marktplaats.nl
Thanks
I will look out for the tokina and search if someone has a 80-200, because I live in Panama and most of the people that has that lens will never leave it. 👍👍
Awsome!0
Budget is 2,500 -3,000 I do a lot of portraits families, party's. I know want to do wedding and top of the line portraits!
Jonathan Burgos oh hell, easy answer, D750
now the question is DO YOU HAVE enough/ any / many lenses?
thats where all the money flushes away
Yes I also rent a lot of gear
I just want more mega pix and faster focus.
renting gets expensive fast :)
Ya D750 right
Hi man
I will buy a nikon d7200, and...
(yes, ive owned both, still have 2 of the Tokinas)
that saves you $600 right there.
18 140 is not a good lens choice, rather grab the 18-200
however for LESS ($230+ mint used Ebay), the 24-85 VR G Nikkor is a better still choice.
for less than $850, EASY ANSWER!!! and it should be called "the wedding lens",...thats the CURRENT 80-200 F2.8 D AF Nikkor.
***** the 105mm Nikkor macro is great, and it has VR, however its construction is weak, and has too much distortion.
The Tokina 100mm 2.8 is $600 less, and produces better image and made far far better.
Were both pretty much on the same page, no use splitting hairs. :)
Thanks a lot both
I've used the Tokina and it's great but I hate that it's not IF.
Robert Mossack This is TRUE, and i AGREE 100% !!
ill add same to the video,..... winks !
I was just looking through my paypal and saw your name. I bought lenses from you! Didn't know it was you.
***** you did????? ive only sold like 2 lenses , maybe 3 in the past year.
you sure???
well paypal says ken wheeler Your purchase
2 NIKON LENSES -- Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 D AF -- & Nikkor 35-70mm Japan EX++$89.00
Item #181666579129
181666579129 does not come up in an ebay search !!!
you sure thats it???? I THINK maybe i did sell those, but ive only sold like 4 lenses in the ENTIRE past year!!
i put it into google and it comes right up
it dosnt matter just thought it was a weird coincidence.
what if u could walk into a camera store and pick one camera and 5 lenses? as apposed to a $15.000 limit?
D810, 105mm F2 DC nikkor, 24-70 2.8, 70 200 2.8 tamron VC.......etc
i agree, but the 500 is very tempting. but serious question. i have been saving for an upgrade and recently got to where i need to be to buy what i had planed on picking up (the 810) should i wait for the next release? how much longer do you think it will be??
i have 2 D500 nikons now :)

I like his funny videos. however he knows very little about photography
Gear? Yes, ....photography? NO.
Actually, i have quite a lot of videos on composition, etc, and have about 40+ MORE videos on same to add.
Pardon, but Kai's videos on gear are about 95% or higher.
No, i say "its all about the SHOT" not the gear.
Im my own person, if you like their videos better, then you shouldnt watch mine.
Yeah, thanks for the advice; I've proceeded as suggested. GL
Kai is the Jeremy clarkson of camera shows very entertaining smashes and explosions but not a full blown informative like clarkson himself
hes entertaining yes, thats about it.
John Valatos well, these 2 videos will surely PISS some people off, but its a logical statement, that "hey, in XXXX price range, this is the best bang for your buck"
or some people will "read" it wrong, .......
*looks at my D3300 and pets it while sobbing* Oh well... Imma try saving to see if next year I can get a nice D750 xDDDD
Cloudzard Host Ohhhh now, dont go depressing me!!!!!! heheeh!!! Honestly, dont make me feel like i just stole someones hot apple pie or something!!

*hugs my D3300 tightly* It's ok 3300 I still love you =,(
Plus I consider it a way of training my abbilities with lame as limited lens haha (just wait for me D750!! ;O )
