  • Economic growth has slowed to the weakest level since the 1990s recession, outside of the pandemic, according to the quarterly GDP data released in December.
The RBA has shifted its tone at its last meeting in 2024, saying it's gaining some confidence that inflation is easing.
But the Reserve Bank board said it did not consider a rate cut.
The latest jobs figures have revealed a tight labour market, taking economists by surprise and highlighting the RBA's difficult task of bringing inflation down to its target.
HSBC Chief Economist Paul Bloxham says the earliest the RBA will be able to cut rates is in mid-2025 but there's a chance the central bank won't get to cut at all in the next 12 months.
That's a troubling prospect for debt-laden households as well as businesses doing it increasingly tough, with hospitality and construction sectors the hardest-hit.
