I was at these shows. Jerry’s voice was shot but he made up for it. The Spectrum was a magical place when the Grateful Dead was in town.

Just listen to how crisp and well-played Jerry's solos are. Bird Song and Dancin' in the Streets are amazing. '85 might have been a crappy year for Jerry's health and voice, but his guitar playing was phenomenal.

Nobody should dislike any live Grateful Dead show, or any show in general. No matter if the show was up to your expectations or not, we must respect, enjoy and love the fact that any live artist is out there doing there best...and fucked or not, the mess ups/accidents/or wrong experimentation that the normal listener thinks is messed up, is really the individual and beautiful things about this band, and live music in general...and what makes us keep listening to the same song1000 times over!! haha

    • @patriceripley3067
      @patriceripley3067 6 років тому +2

Nobody should dislike any live Grateful Dead show, or any show in general. I have a problem with this way of thinking. Please refrain from telling people what to think, thanks. Where does that kind of wrong think process stop? Are you going to tell people how to vote? Are you going to tell people how to process information? Are you going to tell people what they should and should not do because it aligns or does not align with your moral compass? It's essentially authoritarian to make a statement like you did . I personally like this show , however it's up to the listener to decide if they like it or not and if they disliked it strongly enough to click the thumbs down. You are forgetting that the enitre point of dead tour was about FREEDOM . That includes free thought , it was not /is not a groupthink situation.

Fair part of that iconic mid 80's is the plucky percussive tone of Brent's Yamaha GS-1 it could punch out chords, or let single notes chime like a bell. He would move on it 87 I believe to a Kurzweil and Roland sound module. This was a brighter straight chorus piano sound, less Rhodes like.

    I was at this show.
Very memorable for me. But I just realized for the first time that Jerry was reading lyrics for “She Belongs to Me”on the floor to his right. I have never seen him do that. Understandable because they did not perform this song very often. But watching this now I realize that he was reading lyrics. Kind of satisfying to me because I never understood how the fuck Jerry could remember all those lyrics for so many years and so many songs.

Some of the headiest nugs were already making their way on tour along with some of the best hash oil I haveever smoked to date, dabbs included. Opium was profuse. I remember it was during Reagan and Bush and the beginning of the drug war against us in the parking lot with agents going around writing down our license plate numbers. It was the last time I went on tour in my own car. One of the best tours for good ganja and smoking hot numbers rolling off stage.

My first show. Just shy of my 21st birthday. Drove out from Denison with Westy and Beth, stopped at Bucknell for the night and picked up Heidi, had Seder dinner on Saturday with Westy's family in Philly, and went to see the Dead on Easter Sunday. My first sensory impression was walking into the back bowl of the Spectrum on the lower level just as Phil was yelling, "Hiya, hiya, hiya kids... Can you hear me?!" and then they open with Do It In the Road?! Seriously?! Jerry looked and sounded horrible but it was a very memorable show for me. We worked our way down to the floor for the second set, and spent it about 20 feet from Jer. Epic... So grateful to have this video to relive that historic weekend... Cheers, and peace out... DRL

I'd call him up and say the Dead are coming and he say I know you want 4 tix all nights right, up and it was done didn't have to worry about selling out. Man I still only payed 25 or 30 a tix.

They seemed to have a thing going that worked magically in that venue, really showed with Shakedown, Samson too, it’s like the sound was really big and reached far there….I once imagined a UFO hovering above, really awesome aliens listening in, taping the show like we often were…

His vocals, appearance were nothing to write home about but man did he play that night. It was a short and sweet first set but that CC Rider and the way Jerry turned it out. More in 30 years and it seems just like yesterday they said back then the trips war for kids and we sure were now Life Goes On and still the music never stops today's music can't compare to the things and times we did back then when life was definitely easier before and TV and internet still have old tapes from my D6 and shotgun Nakamichi microphones can you say can't live in the past but I sure would like to God bless

.... and I want to comment on the phenomenal skill of Mr. Vince Welnick, just because I have NEVER seen a comment where someone said something nice about the guy. His Heart was bleeding through his hands into that piano, you can tell..... and I like Donna too when she's not doing NFA.

photoslum i was 17 as well. I was a sr in high school. Went on a bus trip that a company in my town used to run. I went w a friend from school but a new teacher caught wind I was going and she wanted to go but my friend wouldn't give up his tix. I was pissed but had a good time. Then many philly and nyc shows to follow. But once Jerry died, they band died in my eyes. Watching the Chicago shows brought back memories but its not the same with Captain Trips

That was my first show too. I was 10 years older than you but was blown away on the 7th.
I traveled with friends from Baton Rouge.
If it wasn't for Brent I may not have gone back in the second night. The BUS stopped right in front of me during the Shakedown.
      I have never gotten off.

My second show. Sadly April 6 isn't on youtube but am so grateful this one is. I travelled from Baton Rouge to Philly with some friends and my hardcore punk ass instantly got on the bus. Saw so many shows after that but I will always be grateful to 'Deadhead Rob' for dragging my ass there.
    Thanks voodoonola for posting this.

It's sad to see how large Jerry became. Still, I love the speedy 85 toy keyboard dot-music jam! She Belongs To Me is always a favorite of mine. My 1st tape was 11-21-85, maybe that's why it's a favorite year of mine. THANKS for the video!

Stephen Dean I love me some 85 too, even though Jerry was visibly declining, his playing didn’t. Attended some of my favorite shows that year. But downhill from there? Surely you jest. What about 87,88,89,90? Great years. I feel the decline started after Brent died. But there were still some great shows to come in the 90’s. Just not as many

I graduated HS in '80 did sweet f-ck all but surf until '88 when I finally saw my first show in St. Pete '88.
I know, at least I got into them before the end of the 80s, but still… I die inside when I think of the shows I missed from '80 to '88

Never got to see the East Coast shows so I'm not quite sure what the difference is. audience is probably louder and more energy. SF Bay Area folks are somewhat jaded and more casual. I've always loved the fact that the dead and I both call the same place home created a certain vibe! Almost every show I ever went to has been here on home turf.😁✌✌🥰

It was kinda cool that these cat's loved playin' in philly. Of the 52 shows or somethin' like that i caught 48 of them and you would be hard pressed to pick a lame show out of them all. Civic center's '74, tower theatre'76, and the good 'ol spectrum. It was nice that there was a roof on the spectrum because on any given night we got soo high it was cool knowing that we could hold on to the catwalks to save us.

Ahh, yeah. I miss home and the spectrum. The fellas were an added bonus, f-ing septa was on strike as usual and I had to get back to Ardmore. Didn't matter, to see the captain was worth it all!!!! God, I miss him. Spectrum, LMAO 😆 miss it though.
