Old Castle Point, East Cowes - Beyond The Landslip

  • A little change from my normal drone videos...
There is an old small tower at the end of the esplanade in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight (Old Castle Point). For years I've fancied taking a closer look. This became a little more difficult recently as back in 2014 there was a fairly major landslip which blocked the footpaths and even the road itself.
But being the brave adventurer that I am (NOT! :) ), last Aug (2017) I thought it would be interesting to strap on the GoPro 5 and see if there was a way through to take a closer look.
Apologies in advance for the shaky video of course. The Karma Grip would have helped, but I wanted both hands free should the need to clamber arise (which it did).
It would have been interesting to take a look further around into Osbourne Bay, but the way was blocked more than I was prepared to climb over.
Pleased I got to take a look though.

About 50 years ago a big storm swept away all of the shingle on both sides of the groin by the old castle. That arched entry under the window that you see after crossing the wall goes down much further. There was a grille in the floor of the chamber that was revealed there. It looks as if they've blocked that entrance for safety reasons.

Fascinating, I had never heard of that. Thanks for the info.

Wow how that's all over grown since i was a kid ( 15 ) You could back then drive to the Outpost Tower and also at the other side you could drive a car it was all clear.
Now most don't know this but about 1 mile after the the Outpost there is a tunnel leading up to the Old Norris Castle.

Good stuff! I'd liked to have done that.

It would have been so much easier to have gone when the tide went out on the beach
