N&W 611 Returns to Strasburg

- I set up along the route of the famed Norfolk & Western 611 steam locomotive heading back to Strasburg for the second time in May 2021, crossing a stone arch bridge that partially washed out in 1972 and continuing under the live wire of Amtrak's busy Keystone Corridor, finally reaching her destination in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania just as the hot humid sun gave way to stiff winds, thunder and heavy rain.
N&W 611 is quite young for a steam locomotive at 71 years of age at the time of filming. In fact, the streamlined J-class is 10-15 years younger than the GG1 electrics than ran on the former electrified Pennsylvania Railroad route seen during the ferry move in this video; however, none of those survive in service today, though 4800 can be seen at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg.
I returned in the early fall to see both 475 and 611 in action, gathering some typical scenes of the Amish country, I hope you enjoy!

I love how you can slightly hear the whistle at the beginning
I'm absolutely floored at how good the cinematography was in this video. Wonderful, wonderful job. You've even given me a few ideas for my own videos on how to make certain shots more interesting. Keep up the phenomenal work!
Impressive cinematography! I was onboard 652 heading to New York at the time of filming, seen at 3:43.
Great camera angles. Looks like the 611 has VT Hokie colors! I live in Hokie town and saw the 611 roll through Cambria a few years back.
Excellent videography.
Another fantastic video, sir!
ChainsawN&W1218,huge fan of N&W 611 & 1218, nice footage,We got her on film alot in and around Christiansburgh VA on NS Radford Division,Christiansburgh District, but now they will not run it under its on power on the mains, hopefully one day and where it was built in 1950 in Roanoke VA with the other class Js,As,and Y class engines.
Your takes were very artfully composed and each scene had pans that were flawless. You make it all look so natural but the truth is that what you did took much planning. Very very nice work!! James.
Watching your videos makes me feel like I’m there Great work
Excellent shots!
Steam engine only with no diesel in the consist. Great to see.
Very Well Done My Friend!! I also got to see 611 in July, and it was a fun experience!! Good 2 have the Queen back in her Reign!! And keep up the Good work btw!! 😃😄☺👍
Thanks, that's cool you got to see 611!
@@CentralPennRailProductions np. I also got to see some Keystone Corridor action in June.
I got to see #611 in July. And apparently she is at Strasburg right now having some work done. Which if you ask me is unusual to say the least because she usually has her work done at the museum.
It cost a lot to move the locomotive around, so I think they determined it better to keep 611 at Strasburg where there is still experienced crew and resources to conduct the work.
@@CentralPennRailProductions given that I wouldn't be surprised if #611 becomes a permanent member of the Strasburg roster. She fits right in plus I imagine having #611 visit makes the Strasburg railroad a lot of money. Given the situation with the pandemic I bet the railroad would be in trouble if it wasn't for #611

Jokes aside, awesome video. Love the cinematic take on your shots.
Haha yeah, I don't mind that honestly because it's not like they ran an excursion up there. PTC aside, NS probably would have towed it anyway. Although I didn't explain it in the video, this is cab signal territory so a CSS equipped unit would have had to led, and cab signals here date back decades before PTC.
@@CentralPennRailProductions I figured there were more technicalities behind it other than PTC. Honestly though it did look pretty good with that ace up front
Awesome video!
It's a shame that the 611 outlived her birthplace at the East End Shops. I've never been a big fan of steam engines but to stand near her, close your eyes and hear her breathe, groan a bit as she get going and then open your eyes and watch her bring a smile to oh so many faces. Still ... I'd love to see the 611 race against the Amtraks. Care to place a small wager???
Wow súper excellent video my friend like and Greetings from Argentina 🙋🏽♂️
Hey man nice job just subbed you deserve it.
excellent video
Sweet video brotha!
i saw 611 running a few hours before her spring thing broke on her in july
Awesome

This cinematography was hands down the best I’ve seen, what camera are you using?
A combination of Panasonic HC-X1500 and GH5.
Awesome video! May I ask what you film with?
Great video. I have to say comparing your shot at the curve to mine I'm leaning towards liking the sound of your Videomic X better. I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my mic, the whistles sounded a bit weird in my recordings. I bought it used and it's an old (12+ years) microphone so it's possible something's not quite right with it.
I did play with the volume curves quite a bit and supplemented the camera audio on top (only when they were passing as it was too windy otherwise) which seemed to drive more of a surround effect. No FX added, just a curve to +18dB fading down until they get closer to bring out the sound of them approaching, with how windy it was the guard I built for the RODE really saved the day there.
611's second visit to Strasburg was great IMO, but tbt I think I preferred its first stay back in 2019, sure this time it won't be leaving til early 2022 to head back to either VMT or NCTM but I still think the first time was better.

Be careful the snake!
SNAKE!
🔰🇺🇸 What does the car behind the coal tender do❓
Water auxiliary tender to carried a lot water.
Why was 1206 leading at first?
It had to be hauled bc of PSR and unlike UP big boy, so 1206 hauled 611 bc it did not have PTC, thanks a lot FRA
@@railfannoah5762 You're correct on the PTC part, incorrect about the PSR part.
@@justahillbilly7777 what is PTC?
@@kingofthemonsters3712 Positive Train Control. Very simply put it's an automatic stop system if a train runs past a stop or caution signal. Class 1 railroads (depending on where the trackage is and the traffic levels) have to have it installed by Federal law.
Central penn rall productions trains vale rio doce!
I love trains, but I hate Snakes!
It’s great to see N&W 611 underway! But how come Amtrak won’t allow 611 to pull excursions in Va. and says nothing about the beautiful UP 4014 travel around thru at least 13 states this summer for over a month. Amtrak does NOT own these tracks in Va. so why are they allowed to dictate that Norfolk Southern can’t even run excursions over their own tracks! Something is wrong with this picture contract or not !!!
Tracks in Virginia are owned (mostly) by CSX or Norfolk-Southern. Neither railroad will allow steam excursions on their tracks at this time. CSX hasn't allowed them for years, N-S goes back and forth depending on who the top management is.
Neither would allow Amtrak either if they could get away with it.
So, you can't blame Amtrak for no steam in Virginia. You can blame them for not allowing it on the tracks they DO own.
Ten years ago she could've galloped her way to Strasburg unassisted with a full train... Now she's gotta be shuttled around by an SD70 like a static museum piece... God I hate the FRA
It's the fact that these ancient machines, however much we want to see them go at full speed or unassisted by diesels they are too valuable by this point. Rising Insurance (Frisco 1522) ,or the parts do not exist anymore, maintenance and so forth.
Speed restrictions because accidents (611's Great Dismal Swamp),not allowed to run because a foreign railroad wants to flex its muscles, hostile to steam or too deep in another railroad's territory (C&O 614)..
Yes,we want them to extend their wings, and yes, they can still do the job they were designed for and yes,we can have this adventurous feeling again..but it's just that we may risk in losing them if we go too far.
We have grown too protective of them as time has passed (because something may happen to them) which is why these rules by the FRA have to be obeyed and they have to be towed or etc.
It sucks.
Great camera angles. Looks like the 611 has VT Hokie colors! I live in Hokie town and saw the 611 roll through Cambria a few years back.
