I adore your videos, and your voice! I remember the pre-internet days when it was much harder to find real life information about the Victorians! Thank you so much!
Your narration is one of the few I've seen which is so clear that even the auto-generated subtitles get 99% of it right. You've a great voice for this! This videos have introduced me to a new author (Mayhew) whose books I MUST buy!!
There were truly some WEIRD horrible jobs in Victorian England. I can only imagine how truly difficult life was for those forced to succumb to those circumstances
So sad that a lot of the people that tell their stories of being in the lowest levels of poverty were in way better positions some years before. Looks like back in that day in London [and other big cities] if you fell one time was nearly impossible to go back on your feet.
Such a shame this isn't a thing anymore. I could retire off of the "pure goldmine" that is my back garden! Obviously good that people no longer need to resort to this type of work to get by though! Great content, please keep up the high standard.
As a child, I was the "pure finder" for 2 pure bred German Shepherds, and, then, 2 pure bred Doberman Pinchers. It was a very, very disgusting "job," but I had no other choice. I feel so terrible that people, during that period of time, were forced to perform any job that they could in order to feed themselves and/or their families. I know that my great-gram used to use her dogs "droppings" for her little garden. She'd say that it was cheaper than buying fertilizer from the store.
Oh No! Your grandmother was making a risky mistake! Dog droppings contaminate the soil with pathogens that plants take up and can make humans very sick. Tape worms, pin worms, not to mention salmonella and other nasty bugs.
You do such a great job with narration, I felt like I could’ve been sitting next to that poor old woman who lost two husbands and survived all eight of her children.
my ancestors came from the Bermondsey tanning business, they went to Australia and ran a tannery in Sydney. I am glad they found a better life for their families, most children did not survive to adulthood in the harsh conditions in London
@@deanjulian6189not everyone who emigrated to AUS or NZ was forced to go because of criminal convictions. Once regular people started moving there, a bunch of both marginalized and wealthy people from the commonwealth immigrated there. Some just seeking better accommodations and a chance at an actual life, some seeking gross opportunities to set up plantations.
I noticed he talks about the practice that the extremely poor would engage upon when they would find a crust, upon which they would subsist. That they would seep it in boiling water... ironically enough, if they had developed this practice based upon experience, that would be the most guaranteed to protect them from Catching something-or-other. But then, elsewhere he remarks on how they used boiled crusts as a form of tea, when they did not have enough money to purchase tea. I used to read those African Explorer type books. One that had some really hilarious stories in it was called Africa speaks. The man went across African entire Expedition, from west to east. They filmed the entire way. He remarked that he never drank water. He always drank tea, brought to a rolling boil. That was the only way he could be sure that the water he was drinking was not going to make him sick.
Imagine the heaving stench of the tanneries alone, especially in the summer? But harvesting the vile of faeces of dogs is enough to challenge a person's gag control. I doubt these poor people even had the opportunity of keeping themselves clean and untainted by this horrendous work.
As a true Londoner, I appreciate your ‘Victorian sounding accent’ you’ve put on. It reminds me of whenever a non English person tries to sound like a Londoner and they end up sounding like Oliver Twist 😂
I remember seeing the word "pure" being used in this context on some sort of British tv show many years ago. I never saw the word "pure" being used like that ever again until today.
A pure finder could make a lot of money by visiting my backyard right about now. Also, dog poop isn’t near as gross or as diseased as human poop. And yes, I’m a healthcare professional and dog owner so qualified to say which poop is grosser.😜😅😅
Enjoy your history findings on how we lived..We have a long street in North Shields Tyne+Wear called Tanners Bank leading to Fish Quay where there were Tanners Premises..Human urine was also for tanning of leather..That's where we get the saying "piss poor"as it was certainly desperate people that went there to sell what was urinated by families through night..Thank you for your content😊
They wondered why they died by their masses lol. Absolutely gut churning stuff but great video non the less. I would like to think that this practice is no longer carried out in the tanning profession. The old Women voice made me PMSL.
@@FactFeast it reminded me of a BlackAdder sketch, it was absolutely brilliant and I really enjoyed them all immensely. Hats off to you Sir an overall great series of videos.
Damn, I just rubbed my denim jacket in dog pure, and I had to throw it out. Bettering clothes by rubbing pure on it is FAKE news, god Damn. I Got scammed!
I don’t quite get it. How did rubbing dog dung on a hide make the leather better? And why was dog dung better for this than the many other kinds of manure that must have been available in Victorian London (horse, ox, cat, poultry, human, rat, etc.)? Lastly, was there nothing less disgusting they could have substituted?
When the old woman was speaking and said 'I couldn't eat a morsel'.....At first I thought that she was talking about eating 'pure' LOL. Thankfully, I THINK I was wrong, and she was actually speaking about food! (I hope!).
The poor sods needed a Pure Guild eventually. But better still, they needed a revolution, and so do we, because the exact same depraved society exists to this today. Working class people! Don't delude yourself that your living conditions have improved since then, because you aren't a pure finder. You are in the same shit, being the same exploited in a reckless economy of immoral inequality. Rise up!
