Aren't the pythons an invasive species & would it be a bad thing if they died because of the cold? People moan about the problem so if mother nature plays it's part in getting rid of them you should be happy.

I'd be pretty darn happy that Mother Nature was correcting a problem. They don't belong there, right?? I don't hate snakes, but they are invasive in that area, no? Over populated and that's why they are hunted?

    • @fredworthmn
      @fredworthmn 2 місяці тому

They are being hunted because they are wiping out native species. There is no defense against them. No native species to eat them except alligators and the snakes eat those too once they are big enough.

both.. invasive and eating obscene amounts of the mammal wildlife in the everglades.. each python eats an absolutely absurd amount of animals every year and each female can have like 30+ eggs each year.. From what i read tho the females are common.. the breeding-ready males that are old and big enough are rare (for whatever reason) so those are the best ones to catch (breeding-aged males) bc they will stay in same area and breed with every female they run into

Responsible snake breeders aren't the problem. They take care of their snakes and vet the people they sell them to. It's the irresponsible breeders that are a problem.
Besides, it sounds like these guys mostly breed ball pythons with weird color combinations, who are a) way smaller and less threatening to the ecosystem than burmese pythons, and b) unlikely to survive if they ever wind up in the wild because they have no camouflage. How well do you think a snake that's bright yellow with white blotches would be able to sneak around in the Everglades?

When I was 5, my dad caught a 12 foot Boa Constricter and he let it loose in the house.
We couldn't find it at some point and were looking for it. We had an old water cooler in
the bedroom window that summer, and one day my mom turned on the water cooler and
it had been in the water cooler. It descaled the poor Boa. I don't remember what was done with it.

It doesn’t reduce their numbers nearly as much as most people think. They burry up in armadillo holes and can survive colder than they would without it. Temps below 32° could be fatal to around 30-40% of the population if it stays that way for 2 consecutive days.

@@Bob-te3le yes somewhat. But they’re still cold blooded, so they’ll always be affected by the cold and that’ll stop them from spreading north of about Ocala. However, they do very very well in the summer here so if even half of them survive it, it’s enough to make the population keep growing and expanding north.

Non-native Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in South Florida and are one of the most concerning invasive species in Everglades National Park. Pythons compete with native wildlife for food, which includes mammals, birds, and other reptiles. Severe mammal declines in Everglades National Park have been linked to Burmese pythons. Why are you saving them ?

Unfortunately, partial kills just selects for accidental sports that can survive the cold. Makes the species more cold resistant.
Should special hunting days be declared for cold snaps. Would be easier to catch snakes in open. Seems like all of the python hunting shows I've seen on TV are shot during the summer.

Coldest winter in 30 years? Not in central Florida that's for sure, least not in my experience/location (between Tampa and Orlando). I didn't realize lower down in the state was having it hard this year.
As for this video talking about how far the Burmese can spread? Give me a break. Maybe and I mean maybe they will make it up to lake Okeechobee but anything past that imo is just fear mongering and sensationalism. In my experience with reptiles and owning pythons (Burmese included) I find it very hard to believe they will adapt to thrive in 40F degree terms and lower, let alone frost and snow and a lot of the areas projected for them to expand gets too cold.
Now I love snakes, I love the Burmese, they are extremely misaligned and made out to be monsters thanks to idiot media puppets, but they do not belong here. They have some of the sweetest dispositions (but like any wild animal they aren't going to be friendly when you're yanking em up off the ground. I can promise you though that injured Burm will become a sweety if it survives and they handle it with a little respect) and they aren't out here being destructive with intent and purpose. They have no idea they are not where they're supposed to be, they are just surviving and now thriving. It's more than just the Burmese running wild down south though, I've seen what looks like African Rock Pythons in some of these videos and I know Central American Boas have been found loose as well. Supposedly there have been Cobras seen as well but not sure how true that is, I only saw one piece about it. Then again sensationalism is the name of the game with 'news' media now and the way this python hunter show presents itself proves that.
As well as pythons and boas (and exotic venomous if that's true) there's several lizard species invasive now, not just the iguana. A lot of these animals got their start when hurricane Andrew destroyed everything in its path including fully stocked pet stores (that's been proven) some are truly accidental escapes but a lot are intentional releases by morons. None of these animals set out to do this destruction intentionally though. It's going to take a much more intense effort to eradicate the Burmese and other invasive species than what little Florida state is doing now. It's laughable what they are doing now imo, but hey it all makes for good media drama, right? Ratings and advertising bring in the bucks so let's milk this for all it's worth....
