In high school we played a game in what we started calling the Mud Bowl during stretches and warm ups. In fairness to Bart Starr, the grounds crew for the Ice Bowl didn’t have much time to prepare for the freezing conditions. But he had to believe, as I initially did, that the Milwaukee grounds crew had over a month to get the field in better shape to handle the rain.

The Dolphins and Steelers dealt with it in 2007 at Heinz (now Acrisure) stadium, where the ball literally goes *SPLAT* after a punt 🤣, and the weather laced the field with chocolate basically. No points till the very end!

I knew the 1982 season was hella weird, but this is ridiculous. Many people complain about artificial turf fields (I support any trashing of Veterans Stadium's crappy AstroTurf surface), but I've seen plenty of games played on awful natural turf.
Yeah, in that same vein, the Expos, probably, would have been broken up, and, eventually, moved, even, without, The, Strike, (that they agreed to), Montreal is a hockey town, 2005 must have been miserable.
I don't know, I remember watching the 1977 NFC playoffs, the Vikings AT the Rams the enite center line of the field end zone to end zone was a line of mud and muck. Despite watching the Monday Night Game where Heinz Field fell apart I have though the 1977 game was FAR WORSE.
I guess there were significant improvements in resodding technology between late 1982 and early 1997. In January 1997, the Packers were able to successfully resod Lambeau Field in the week between their Divisional Playoff "Mud Bowl" game against the 49ers and the NFC Championship game against the Panthers.
@JaguarGator 9 In a way, I kind of miss having shared football/baseball stadiums because of how schedules regarding stadium usage can conflict. Then again, if the grounds crew fucks up big time (like here) ..... you're thankful the shared stadiums era is done with. And this field condition was way worse then what happened as shown in the Packers/Broncos 1987 game that resulted in a Brewers game being postponed.
That was the 1977 NFC Divisional Playoff in Los Angeles (LA Coliseum) between the Vikings and Rams that was played the day after Christmas after I believe 6-7" of rain fell in LA, making the field a total quagmire.
I was at that game@ County Stadium! It was the infield that was always an issue there. The strike-shortened season had made it easy to get tickets at face value(Gold package).
Another video about the 1982 (or 1983) NFL season. The announcers for this game were Jim Simpson and Bob Costas. See The Oakland Raiders at the Miami Dolphins in 1970 played in a Monsoon.
In the 80s we played in cow pastures and prayed for rain or snow. Then again we were a running team. But I played defense and those were my favorite games
This was just one game. But in truth, what did the Bills in that season was that they ended the season on a 3 game road trip, a rarity in football. They lost all 3 games. In fact, 4 of their last 5 games were on the road. All 4 road games were losses.
True; the 1965 NFL Championship was played in a quagmire. I believe it was played in Green Bay. Jim Brown’s last game, he was held to just over 50 yards on the muddy ground.
County Stadium should still be running strong today… along with Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Metropolitan Stadium, Three Rivers Stadium, Riverfront Stadium, Wrigley Field, Fenway Park…. all the dual purpose football / baseball stadiums when football was real
Jets at Bills '74 is a contender. Only 3 completed passes, total! all by The Jets. Receivers couldn't run routes as they didn't know where they were going to stop hydroplaning when they tried to stop.
When the Dolphins and Patriots played each other during week 1 of the 1994 season, the baseball infield dirt at Joe Robbie Stadium was still intact even though there had been no baseball played there since August 11, 1994. The MLB players went on strike on August 12, 1994 with the remainder of the 1994 season officially being called off on September 14, 1994. The Dolphins vs Patriots game was played exactly 10 days before the cancellation of the MLB season. I would guess that the baseball infield dirt was being kept intact in the event that the 1994 MLB season could have possibly been salvaged.
As someone who supports a lower league English Football League (EFL) club fields like the one described here are unfortunately still commonplace in England from October-March outside of the Premier League & the 2nd division EFL Championship. I should point out that lower league English soccer is equivalent to AA or single A minor league baseball here in the US in terms of the quality of the facilities (though some are excellent) & the amount the players are paid. Many clubs at that level do not have the funds to hire & maintain a full time grounds crew to maintain the pitch. Clubs often only hire one or two people to do the job on a part time basis & they only work 1-2 days a week during the season. This often results in the field turning into an absolute mud bath in rainy conditions & large clumps of grass being ripped up. When the field is like this, many clubs (especially ones that are cutting costs) often leave the field as it is because they don't want to pay to have it fixed/replaced even though it greatly increases the risk of injury. The EFL & the English FA have had to step in on multiple occasions throughout the years and either provide clubs (especially the cash strapped ones) with additional funds to fix/replace their field or outright fine or in the case of one club back in the 1920's kick them out of the league because their field was so poor.
Christmas '82 was the best one I ever had. Visited my DolFan grandparents in south Florida, my team beat the Bills in a big MNF game in Miami (after trailing 10-0), and I got (deep breath) Castle Grayskull, the AT-AT *and* a record of The Hobbit (the Ralph Bakshi movie) all at the same time 😁😁😁
1984, was, the, worst, Christmas, for, me, my, dirt-cheap, Mom, bought Transformers, for, my, lower-income, neighbors, and, a Castle Grayskull from a store, for, discontinued toys, for, me, when I questioned why I got a toy from a cartoon that, was, already, airing, while, I, was, asleep, she called me, an, ungrateful brat, who should be happy to get toys, at all, my sister, later, confirmed, what I suspected, the, only, reason I didn't grow up, without, a Nintendo, was, because, my, Dad, won, one, in a raffle, at least, my Grandparents would save the day, by, getting me a Voltron, and, threatening to call the police, if she didn't apologize to me, immediately.
And WHY was this game in Milwaukee in the first place? Packers were playing three games a year in Milwaukee (which continued into the '90s) that was done by Vince Lombardi to prevent the AFL from putting a competing franchise in Milwaukee at County Stadium.
Bob Costas: Master of the Obvious even in 1982. (Don’t know if you watched him during the Yankees-Guardians series but man, he just did not shut up. Even for him he was wordy.)
the pic shown: i could see faint bits of the blue numbers (which look more like purple on my screen) but there was no way you could tell the color of the pants, and considering they weren't wearing white pants, that says a lot about how bad the field was. guess they couldn't take the cash hit and play the game in green bay instead (can't imagine the field up there would have been as bad as this field).
Also during the 1982 season, the Rams, like the Packers at Milwaukee County Stadium, didn’t sod their field after the Rams baseball tenants, the AL West champion California Angels lost the American League Championship Series to the Brewers. The Anaheim Stadium grounds crew left the field in its baseball state for the rest of the Rams home games for the 1982 regular season. However, this happened In California, where it is sunny most of the time.
Despite, losing, Fred Lynn, was, the, ALCS MVP, hitting, .611, with, 1 HR, and, 5 RBIs, the Angels blew, a, 2-0, lead, he, was, also, the, first, player to, win, MVP, and, Rookie Of The Year, in the same season, Ichiro Suzuki, was, the, only, other, player to do that.
Reminds me of the 2003 Marlins preventing Pro Player Stadium from sodding their turf and the Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare missing two game winning attempts against New England off the dirt.
For my money, a game played in conditions like this is infinitely more interesting. Both teams have to deal with the field. I seldom watch the NFL anymore, but I would be much more inclined to watch a game under adverse conditions than something played under sterile, artificial, pampered circumstances.
So hearing this to have a 2 team stadium lol one had to suck. That defeats the purpose of having a two-team stadium right? Having one be a loser while one a winner.

The game should be played in mud. Mud has characters. It also evens the talent. Some Racing horse are good mudders. The 1995 or 1996 Cowboys only lost one game to the Cardinals on a national grass field. The Cowboys had a large offense line with a 300# average weight for the linemen. Ironically the Super Bowl was being played at the Cardinal's stadium. The Steelers had a poor 1st half which sealed the game. The 2nd half was better, but the Steelers could have won with better coaching. I believe that the grass field was a factor.

Using logic based on your first minute of commentary, Veterans Stadium was downright criminal. Prove me wrong.
I, cannot, and, I will, not, I mean, the fact that there, was, a court, literally, built inside of the stadium, truly, says it all.
The Packers also won an NFL Championship against the Cleveland Browns in the "Mud Bowl" in which field conditions were also a muddy mess.
I miss muddy football!
Another thing about County Stadium is that teams were on the same sidelines rather than opposite sidelines.
they didn’t care about players even a little back then golly
FYI: Greg Koch pronounces his name like Cook.
@JaguarGator 9
In a way, I kind of miss having shared football/baseball stadiums because of how schedules regarding stadium usage can conflict.
Then again, if the grounds crew fucks up big time (like here) ..... you're thankful the shared stadiums era is done with.
And this field condition was way worse then what happened as shown in the Packers/Broncos 1987 game that resulted in a Brewers game being postponed.
I remember a game similar to this, a 1970s game between Minnesota and Los Angeles.
Fred smerlas should be in the hall of fame. He was a first team all pro in 1982
Shades of the 1950 Grey Cup!
Another video about the 1982 (or 1983) NFL season.
The announcers for this game were Jim Simpson and Bob Costas.
See The Oakland Raiders at the Miami Dolphins in 1970 played in a Monsoon.
The AFC Championship that year was also a "mud bowl" since no tarp covered the Orange Bowl field and you got a typical Miami rain..
Worst field I ever saw was the nfc championship game between Vikings and rams in the coliseum.
In the 80s we played in cow pastures and prayed for rain or snow. Then again we were a running team. But I played defense and those were my favorite games
The 1982 Packers only played 1 game at Lambeau Field. They played 3 in Milwaukee.
This was just one game. But in truth, what did the Bills in that season was that they ended the season on a 3 game road trip, a rarity in football. They lost all 3 games. In fact, 4 of their last 5 games were on the road. All 4 road games were losses.
Browns ended up with one in 2001
Isn’t this like almost any November NFL game before 1965?
True; the 1965 NFL Championship was played in a quagmire. I believe it was played in Green Bay. Jim Brown’s last game, he was held to just over 50 yards on the muddy ground.
Films of the 1965 NFL title game at Lambeau between the Browns and the Pack seemed worse than this game in all areas except the baseball infield.
Patriots and Dolphins played in horrible field conditions in 1994. But nothing on this level. WOW
Wow, this is what NFL football should always be, rain, cold, snow and sloppy muddy field!!
I saw this game on NBC.
Why don't they make the fields pool tables?
With thick rubber mats underneath the green felt.
So the players bounce when they hit the ground.
Playing football in a field meant for baseball is never a good idea. 😞
4:09 paperrrrr.
Also; Patriots vs Dolphins to open the 1994 season!
And WHY was this game in Milwaukee in the first place?
Packers were playing three games a year in Milwaukee (which continued into the '90s) that was done by Vince Lombardi to prevent the AFL from putting a competing franchise in Milwaukee at County Stadium.
Green Bay played some home games in Milwaukee as far back as the 1930s to attract more fans and money.
FedEx field called and wants a recount.
Field Conditions and Weather is a part of football and teams need to adjust. Now yes this field was horrible and more akin to a High School game.
Bob Costas: Master of the Obvious even in 1982.
(Don’t know if you watched him during the Yankees-Guardians series but man, he just did not shut up. Even for him he was wordy.)
Better than Matt Underwood.
Where do you come up with these? You seem to know everything about football.
the pic shown:
i could see faint bits of the blue numbers (which look more like purple on my screen) but there was no way you could tell the color of the pants, and considering they weren't wearing white pants, that says a lot about how bad the field was.
guess they couldn't take the cash hit and play the game in green bay instead (can't imagine the field up there would have been as bad as this field).
Despite, losing, Fred Lynn, was, the, ALCS MVP, hitting, .611, with, 1 HR, and, 5 RBIs, the Angels blew, a, 2-0, lead, he, was, also, the, first, player to, win, MVP, and, Rookie Of The Year, in the same season, Ichiro Suzuki, was, the, only, other, player to do that.
idk why they didn't just move the game to lambeau. since they knew the field had not been sodded.
still not as bad as turf fields that are causing an alarming number of injuries.
Reminds me of the 2003 Marlins preventing Pro Player Stadium from sodding their turf and the Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare missing two game winning attempts against New England off the dirt.
Speaking of which, great, for, the players, but, there's, truly, no, "fanbase," which deserved, not, one, but, two, Championships, less.
Ah, Buffalo’s War Memorial Stadium A/K/A the rock pile had some awful fields in it’s day.
Great matchup ruined by piss poor field
Football should be played on natural grass and mud. Players wouldn't get hurt as much
I still think that 70’s Viking-Rams playoff game was worse
Couldn't they just have played the Game in Lambeau? If they knew that it would be a mess, why not just move the game to their home stadium?
Remember when NFL games were played in baseball stadiums?
Ah yes, "multipurpose" stadiums were all the rage in the last century. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
For my money, a game played in conditions like this is infinitely more interesting. Both teams have to deal with the field. I seldom watch the NFL anymore, but I would be much more inclined to watch a game under adverse conditions than something played under sterile, artificial, pampered circumstances.
If you have to do the breast stroke to score a TD it's time to call the game
So hearing this to have a 2 team stadium lol one had to suck. That defeats the purpose of having a two-team stadium right? Having one be a loser while one a winner.
Well, in the, Early-1970s, both, Oakland teams, were, great, though, the severe weather problems faced by Milwaukee obviously, weren't, going to present themselves, there.
Watch old films of football and you will find worse than that field
I saw a Vikings-Steelers game from '76 that I could swear was played on a high school field. That's how it looked.
Jets at Dolphins 1982 AFC Championship game comes to mind.
Yeah, people who talk about what a, great, competitor Don Shula, was, tend to gloss, over, the way, he, indefensibly, did the Jets dirty.
@@matthewdaley746 Dolphins had already beaten the Jets twice that season, why would they have been scared of them the third time around? Besides, the media thought the snow plow game was hilarious so...karma and stuff.
@@DolFan316 Correct, they'd have, probably, won, anyway, which made what they did all the, worse, at least, Washington prevented them from accomplishing, the, ultimate, disgrace, after, reaching, SB 17, Disaster Averted.
MILWAUKEE!!!!
I’d like for the man at 10:16 to introduce himself.
Turned out to be the key player in, two, Dynasties, Of, One, the Cardinals, stupidly, placed, winning, Citizenship Medals, over, winning, Games, it absolutely cost them the 1985 World Series, and, probably, cost them the 1987 World Series, as well.
Looks better than skins field when rg3 got hurt
49ers used to have some doozies
The game should be played in mud. Mud has characters. It also evens the talent.
Some Racing horse are good mudders.
The 1995 or 1996 Cowboys only lost one game to the Cardinals on a national grass field.
The Cowboys had a large offense line with a 300# average weight for the linemen.
Ironically the Super Bowl was being played at the Cardinal's stadium.
The Steelers had a poor 1st half which sealed the game. The 2nd half was better, but the Steelers could have won with better coaching.
I believe that the grass field was a factor.
Funny because packers vs bills is today
When real men played in the NFL
Cardinals won 6-3 in Game 7
Correct. I could’ve made that clearer when I said that they won the series 4-3, not the game 4-3
Hi jg9, not sure what you think about teams play in Europe, in the middle of a season, it robs the fans of a home game, I'm not keen of the games, I think the league will ruin the product, I'd be interested in hear, what you think, great channels by the way
But it doesn't rob a home game anymore. Now that the season is 17 games long, you go to London the years ytou are scheduled a 9th home game and will still have the 8 home games they always had in a 16 game season.
@@chriskay1449 that's fair enough, though, I'd be a bit annoyed if I was a fan in the states,, I live in the UK by the way, and it annoys me when our media always go on about having a franchise here, or the old favourite, play the superbowl over here, to both them I say no
@@Staceyatkinson4496 one day, America won't just host "friendly" games of soccer (football). I'm sure there will be actual matches played for points in the future.

As a 12 year old me and the neighborhood gang of boys used to play Nerf football on lawns at least as muddy is this one if not worse and we didn’t even have cleats. But we never had any issues so I don’t see what these guys are complaining about. Just saying 🎃
