I loved this vid. This is my very first time sewing ANYTHING, gave it a try. The jacket look like Frankenstein, but guess what , It's mine and I love it. Will do much better next time!!

I've been looking for a clear jacket making guide for a long time, but haven't been successful at all until I find this tutorial. This video was uploaded July last year, don't know why I couldn't find it before now. Great job man! Thank you soooo much! I just finished a suit for a guy that took me about 2 months longer than it should have mainly because I couldn't find instructions, video or written, for a man's lined suit. I had taken apart a different suit to create a basic pattern but my seam ripper got more use than my sewing machine because, although the pieces were cut right, I couldn't figure out what order to put things together because lining man's suit is much different than lining a woman's formal. It's not just duplicate a shirt and sew them inside out 🤣 I took apart another suit and bought a boy's pattern, thinking it was lined but, of course it's not. So, I searched for a man's lined suit pattern and, finally, found this video!!!!! Now I can practice on the little one and then make my man the custom talored suit I want to 😁😁😁😁

Sir, thank you so much for doing these videos. I've always been interested in tailoring, mens suits. I think it's because as a 80s kid, I lived miami vice and as a little girl I loved seeing don johnson and Philip michael thomas in those suits! We women (most of us do) love a man that's put together.

Whilst learning to tailor at 14-15 years old the sleeve was the thing that stopped me doing jackets and stuck to making jeans. Hello Norris. This is one well executed video for a first timer on my making a jacket such as myself. You were so very clear about every detail in this process. My son is Class of 2024 and my hope is to make his prom suit. After seeing your video, I have no worries that I am going to complete his suit with no problems. Can't wait to make this. thank you so much. UPDATE: made this in twill to really see if I could actually make it without wasting a ton of money on fine wool. It turned out really nice even in black twill. Rewatched the video cause I'm getting ready to cut out 2 and sew these up for my sons in navy linen. I bought and made your slacks pattern as well. First time doing welt pockets and first time doing this kind of sleeve... Thank you SO much for making this video as easy to follow along as you did. Couple things I did differently based off my own experience and requirements but it was such an easy to follow tutorial. I don't know what kind of wizardy you pulled with that sleeve... I didn't understand what was happening but I tried to copy the hand movements and ended up with a perfectly finished sleeve. THANK YOU!!!!

i Just purchased the pattern today. This will be my next project - probably some time in Summer this year. I've sewn other garments (button shirts, shorts, pants, jeans), but I've never sewn a suit/blazer. Wish me luck. Oh, and thanks a million for this sew-along - it will be extremelly helpful.
Wow. Ok this was inspirational. One day when I grow up i can make this
9:24 after the dart is sewn, the raw edge is aligned, which only happens if the dart was sewn to the correct size. This dart matches the contours of the waist. If the edge doesn’t match, it will look more straight up and down, or boxy like a t-shirt, and will drape differently with that extra fabric making folds at the hips when buttoned up and you bend at the waist.

Same here the sleeves make no sense AT ALL!!! Lolll that’s why I’m watching this video
8:11 notice how he pins this up: pins enter and pierce the stitch line and he checks the back for where the needle exits. This keeps the dart geometry aligned and stable at the machine. Sewing fabrics together usually has a raw edge to align, maybe notches. The lower fabric is in a blind spot at the machine, completely covered with no way to see it once the needle and thread are in use.

Lamar Latrell I know it can be very stressful to start just a detailed garment with high level techniques, but this video is great and will get you through it all.
As a cutter by trade I always called the pieces cut as a pair of 2. Top Sleeve, under sleeve, front, back other parts as a pair. All patterns are cut from fabric on the double. (double blocked fabric suiting) Sleeve interfacing must be cut as a pair due to having a left and right part for each sleeve.

15:03 this is an optional step to add bulk and stability at the upper chest. It makes this area a bit more stiff, warmer, makes the lower fabric drape differently, and adds weight which makes it more satisfying to wear. If your belly protrudes a bit or your chest is small, this can make the jacket and you look more normal.
15:21 the buildout follows the roll line, which makes that roll over a bit larger of a radius, and makes it a consistent line without creasing when not buttoned. This is important because most blazers are worn unbuttoned, and the consistent roll line and structure makes it wear with nice symmetry, which makes the wearer appear to be more clean and organized.
Hello, in my pattern I noticed that pieces 10 and 11 aren't aligning like the video (19:20). When I line up 11's CF with the top/end of 10 there is a 1 inch gap between the ends of the pattern. In your video they appear to align evenly. I can't move on to sewing 10 and 11 to the neckline because the lining up is not working, there is too much neckline now for the bodice. It is not going around evenly. Any resolve?
I want to do this for me..woman..I have ALWAYS loved the inside pocket of men's blazers. What would I need to do to make this for me?

14:06 I had a hard time edge-stitching through the seam allowance. Couldn’t ensure the stitch line hit the same way. I think I will come in just past the seam allowance to make kind of a small ridge of the bulk. Just need to make sure I trimmed it down cleanly and in a way that compliments the stitch.
I am trying to follow the instructions on how to make this jacket. I am at the sleeve portion (52:43) and to say I'm frustrated is an understatement. "This" and "that" are not technical terms and follow ex. grab this, take that and fold it there. It's not instructional. I would have loved to see the other side of the garment in areas where the fabric was not a straight fit and explanations for the variances (sleeve again, the split and zig zag stitch on the side front, etc.) The view is one sided, meaning there are places in the video, the sleeve hem, where showing the other side of the fabric is helpful to those of us that have not made this pattern before. My hem did not come together the way its shown in this video because my fabric puckered based on the instructions. There are other mishaps from video to reality (attaching the sleeve corner to the lining after completing the sleeve hem is another) but for those that have been sewing a while, we can certainly make it work. I have been sewing for over 10 years and while I am up for a challenge, I am so disappointed to get this far and are still having trouble. I've come too far to give up so I will improvise but please consider a reshoot of this Sew Along. In the meantime, I will keep watching the video so I can better understand attaching the sleeve lining to the fabric and finish the jacket.

I'm having trouble getting the side back lining pieces to match the back lining and front side lining. I clipped the longer less curvy piece, and put it against the feed dogs but there is too much fabric? What's the best way to trim it down to match better?

I've watched this video four times to better understand men's blazer/jacket and I wanted to say thanks for making this pattern! My boyfriend handed me a pattern to make a jacket for him and the pattern was awful! It had no shape, i was so confused since I only make women's clothes. After this video I realized the pattern was terrible and this is the pattern I needed to buy. I bought this jacket and the sleeves are amazing and look professional... the other pattern I had was tube sleeves and I hated it. The other pattern also called for ruffling the man's shoulder sleeve??? it was hot garbage. thanks for making this video xoxo

I'm pretty sure the terms for cutting are a pair of fronts, a pair of uppper sleeves, a pair of collars, or a pair of pockets, or a pair of undersleeve linings, a pair of upper sleeves. etc

Thanks, this is the second time I watched your video. I am trying to know order in two steps. Shoulder back and front goes first to the lining on the front piece? I am not sure what it will be the best order to follow. First shoulders and second lining to the front? or First goes lining on the front and later front and back shoulders?
This is a great video, thank you. Just quickly what material did you use for the front interfacing? The instructions say use fusible but it appears to be sew on in the video.
Always a good idea to re-inforce pocket areas with interfacing, *especially* where lining's involved.

This math class to me. "Wait... how'd we get there?... How'd that happen?.. Which part did I not get!?" Jokes aside, thank you very much for your detailed guide and explanation. I attempted making a casual jacket prior to having watched this video, relying only on intelligent guesses and fitting as I go. Needless to say, the fit was disastrous and the material was a waste. I have, however not given up and am repeating the project, now having only watched your video. My jacket's quarters are to be much longer than your pattern's but with similar details. I also, will use no lining. I hope a fine enough blanket stitch will close up all the main seams at the back and sleeves that aren't hidden under a facing. My comment has gotten rather long and a piece of work to read, given its paragraphing or lack thereof. My enthusiasm has simply taken the wheel. Thank you again for your video and your generosity to impart on us less experienced, free knowledge. You know, like that proverb about teaching a man to fish or something. It's admirable.

Hello, Thank you for the tutorial. I do have two questions. I want to make a slim fit Tuxedo jacket. If I omit the first button will the lapel naturally lay flat? The second question is; if I alter the front bottom of the jacket to give a slight edge where the jacket closes. Meaning make the opening slightly more visible should give me the Tuxedo look? I pray I explained that last question correctly. Thanks for any suggestions and assistance.
