One fascinating story I’ll always remember about West Mountain Sanitarium is that it’s the place where composer Richard Smith wrote the lyrics to the song “Winter Wonderland”. He was a native of Honesdale, Pa. and wrote the lyrics in 1934 while he was there being treated for tuberculosis. “Winter Wonderland,” some say, was inspired by seeing children play outside his window in the snow and remembering doing the same as a boy at Honesdale’s Central Park across the street from his childhood home. With assurances from the doctors that the TB was in remission, he and his wife moved to New York where he wrote several other songs and late in 1934 he collaborated with pianist Felix Bernard who composed the music for “Winter Wonderland.” Unfortunately, the tuberculosis returned and Mr. Smith died the following year, just before his 34th birthday, but he did live long enough to hear Guy Lombardo and his orchestra, the Royal Canadians, perform his song that Christmas, fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a songwriter. This song that was written at West Mountain Sanitarium is today ranked fourth in the top 30 holiday songs of all time, according to ASCAP.
I really enjoyed the tour...especially the bay window area, the wonderful fireplace , the artesian well and the beautiful surrounding scenery ( love the ring of mountains in the distance.) Thank you for another interesting explore.
Some friends and I visited the Sanitation back in the early 90’s. Tons a medical paperwork and medical equipment were still on the floors. We did not stay to long as we were greeted by two coyotes. I will never forget it. Thanks for sharing with us all. Brought back many memories!!
I really enjoyed this video. I have watched it many times. My mother died in this hospital in 1959. You were not correct when you said people were locked in there like animals. Maybe in earlier times, but my mother had been in this hospital 3 times. The first two times she checked herself out. She was an alcoholic and couldn't stand being without her booze. The third time she checked in she was very ill and died there. I just wish I could go there and take the smallest stone or piece of board to keep for myself. I live over 500 miles away and I am in a wheelchair so that is not going to happen. It had been on my bucket list for many years. I would give anything to have found those papers that you were talking about. Thanks so much for the video.
thanks for the shout out!!! I appreciate it I had to leave during one of your interruptions. but I just watched the full video now. I will definitely try to meet up at Knoebels and see you in your pumpkin suit lol. the new power box might be tied in with the new house built or if the land is up for sale it might be there for redevelopment
Hey JP! I think I just saw an apparition in your video at 21:25. It doesn't show up on my Mac screen but it shows pretty clear on my 42" flat screen tv. It is on the far right hand side inside the dark building. It kinda glides from the right to the left and stops right in the middle of the dark area. Bright circle of a head and darker upper part of body. There and gone in a millisecond.
Full body apparition at 39:59 as soon as your camera view passes the right end of the wall. Shows up on both computer and tv. He had his back towards you. Very easy and plain to see. WOW!!
Great revisit. Nice fireplace
i just saw the 2016 video and now i saw this one amazing

That was what reports read when i researched it but you may be correct that it was maybe earlier times. Thanks for watching
My grandmother was a patient here in the mid 60's. Men were on the first floor, women had the second floor
Is this place still around??
Everything torn down and private property now.

Much more dilapidated than your first visit. 😞 At 40:54 it's like something passes it front of your camera.
Sorry I missed most of the live stream. I was out and about and my connection dropped out. I'm watching it back now.
No big deal, listen at the end, i was mentioning some things to you and Jay. Wasn't sure if you were still watching.

ok this is starting to creep me out now...... at 41:28 it looks like there are at least two faces in the windows watching you leave the area.
