Why Does This Building Have A Subway Tunnel??? (Steamtown 2019)

  • In this video we check out the remains of an old subway system that was used to transport materials and employees to and from a former locomotive erecting shop (now General Dynamics). Originally built in 1910, the subway system used an overhead electrical line as used my trolleys. It was later converted to a battery operated locomotive and was last used in the 1950s. After that we get to see the rest of the building, most of which is in various states of decay and finally we go to the records area where we see thousands of books, maps and relics from the past. So come along as we tour the Steamtown Office & Storage building. Enjoy

Places like this make me wonder how the engineers and others literally design this, workers build it and make it functional. It is fascinating...the elevators, tunnels and old equipment. Thank you again Jay for filming.

Jack Lawrence I worked in that building from 1968 to 1972. The office was on the fourth floor looking toward the foundry. Chamberlain owned it at the time making 155mm shells. The comment about no air conditioning is true. It was hotter inside than it was outside. It was a terrible time keeping the computer running in the summer. Later on in the seventies, there was a model railroad club on one of the lower floors.

This video is the icing on the cake 🎂- yesterday that fantastic steamtrain video and now this video - it was amazing to see that they had a train downstairs in that building that transferred stuff to another building - all done from the basement of the first building- too bad it wasn’t running now .

Good history tour. I often wonder who is going to take the place of these people as our generation and younger don't seem interested in stepping up to the plate. The older generation knows what it means to volunteer, provide a service, preserve history. Something that seems to lost today. Appreciate you taking the time to capture it on film.

I do have a 1940's conductor's kerosene hand lantern with a red glass globe lens. It was used by the conductor to signal the engineer. I got it from a friend's step dad who worked for years on the railroad. He wired it for an electric light bulb. Fortunately, he didn't alter it at all and just ran the wire through the slot the kerosene lamp wick control went through. I was able to find a replacement kerosene tank with the wick mechanism and returned it to its original condition. I also have two glass insulators I found on a downed telephone pole on an abandoned railroad track near an old tunnel the track ran through. Unfortunately, all the entry points to where the tunnel is (was?) is now gated and 'No Trespassing' signs posted.

Hi Jay! Very interresting tour. That was one TALL building and a long way down. Nice to see so much has been saved & the history won't be forgotten.
Since you luv trains are you interested in seeing how some miniture towns are made & set up? This one guy shows how to paint say waterfalls, and does incredible detail work to make the bridges and rock work look so real.
Of course they also have videos on the trains moving, going through the towns. A video showed the Drive Inn with the cars and they had a cammar placed so 'you' could see yourself in the Drive Inn screen. There was a small fair going on with a little fariess wheel, a marry go round and all kinds of trains moving.
I can look through my saved videos and try to get the links for a few of those videos if you'd like. Maybe others would like it as well.
If I see any of those old train lamps in great condition and I can afford to buy I will & hope you have fun with them. Again thanks for the tour. BIG 🖒'S UP !

Great tour of history! I lived in an apartment building that was at one point on the historic register and it had a functioning mail drop just like that building and our freight elevator looked very similar to that elevator. Unfortunately the owner sold the building to people more interested in $ than history and it went to crap in just a few years after they bought it.
