    I bought the Yongnuo when it came out. Saving for the Nikon lens, but wasn't there yet... Don't regret my purchase. Thanks for helping me feel good about it. No complaints from me.

    To be fair, literally every mirrorless 85mm lens is absolutely stellar, i dont think they are hard to design since they all perform so incredibly well, the sonys, viltrox, yongnuos etc.

    The Nikon lens is more than twice as much money and the difference is very slight. But, will the Nikon lens last longer? Better construction? I think the YN85 f/1.8 is well worth a look. Thanks for the review. I enjoy watching you two chatting in the park.

    I have both Nikkor and Third Party. Most of my third party purchases ae Sigma Art (F mount) or Laowa Ultra Wide Angle 10, 12 and 15mm. No Nikkor shorter than 20mm Z mount yet. The Aurora is very active and that is my main subject matter. I look for glass that is good enough for the task at hand, but I sure like my S line glass. As they say, I have one foot planted on each side of the fence.

    • @RussandLoz
      @RussandLoz  2 місяці тому

      I think that is the future if third party manufactures keep making them this good. I keep getting the aurora photos wrong, the last time I was doing my exposures too long, as it was so bright I only needed 5 second exposures I think

    Really interesting comparison this one. Given its almost as good as the Nikon Z 85mm 1.8s, would you say its on a par or better than the older Nikon F 85mm 1.8G? And while it seems like a no brainer price wise at less than half the price, what price difference do you think the Nikon lens is worth? Appreciate that is a pretty subjective question!

    • @RussandLoz

      @@dogdadoutdoors I can’t remember what the old f mount versions are like. It would be interesting to compare to the 1.4 if I had one. Like with all tech. You pay a lot more for a bit more. So the Nikon lens is a fair price on promo or used especially

    Chinese manufacturers will shake up the camera market a lot. They can just produce cheaper, so offer a similar product for less money. Initially they struggle with experience, but once they are a few years in, they catch up and are hard to beat because of their cost structure. We've seen it with Viltrox, there will be more to come. It will be very interesting to see because they not only compete against Nikon, Fuji, Sony and Canon, they also compete against each other. Viltrox, Yongnou, Meike, TTA, 7Artisans, Sirui, some of these names people will associate with poor quality for now, but they did the same for Viltrox some years back.

    • @RussandLoz
      @RussandLoz  2 місяці тому

      Exactly right, I do wonder if they continue to catch up, the camera brands won't let them in some way!

    If you want to sell the lens, the Nikon is much easier to sell I'm sure. If you can buy the Nikon second hand, your own write-off will be lower than with the Yongnuo. By the way; the Nikon 85mm 1.8S is really, really good.
    In stead of sharpness, I would be much more interested in lens errors and the way the unsharpness renders. Most lenses are sharp enough under easy circumstances.

    no offense mate but I think this takes a little bit of a limited view on what counts as a 3rd party lens. A Zeiss Otus or Coastal Optic lens would both be third party. Also in the cat photo it was easy to spot because of LocA and the overall feeling of color accuracy. Thankfully I despise 85mm so no difficult purchase choice for me.
