450hp Tesla powered 1969 VW Crew Cab - UTTERLY INSANE !

- I have been working with Electric Classic Cars since last summer, bringing the amazing work they do converting classic cars to run on electric power to the small screen. We have a TV show coming out this year.
In this video I get to show you the simply awesome 1969 VW Crew Cab owned by the genius behind ECC...my mate Richard Morgan. This epic VW bus is running a 450 horsepower large Tesla motor from a Model S and a 100kw battery pack from a Model X ! You can imagine how crazy this thing is !

It's got all the aerodynamics of a parachute, but yeah. Fast potato!
@@mikeyo1O1 😂
If this helps keep older cars on the road then I am all for it. Surely less damage to the environment as well. I wish this company every success. Well done. And well done for highlighting. Keep it up!
As for being less damage to the environment, it depends on you use case. If you use it frequently then yes, it would be better for the environment, but if you only wan't to drive it occasionally (car shows, etc.) then it could take more than a decade to make up for the emissions of manufacturing a battery.
VW is working on a project to retrofit all the classic beetles, and bus to electric for the ones who are interested, i think they have sample already
Have you seen a lithium mine?
Things like this do at least show us that even if ICE is eventually banned completely, we’ll still be able to drive classics. Great video 👍
Goes like a Tesla, doesn't look like a Tesla. Win/win.
Heck ya... Maybe the best thing about Tesla is that we have amazing parts to use. Behind us are the days of only having fork lift DC hardware. Don't get me wrong, BEV converters have done amazing things with such cheap low tech parts for decades. If you think EVs can't be "worked on", then your just not using your imagination properly. We have been getting our hands dirty on this stuff for at least a half century. And I can still be a Tesla fan boy and a greese monkey at the same time! This thing is a #EVGrin mega machine!

Such a great thought. Im thinking there could be a strong demand for "electric conversions for your classic car". What do you think?
That gives hope to people who love their petrol cars to convert them into electric , awesome guys I wish this company all the best
It was nice to see this old VW with new life breathed into it. That ST was perfectly placed; showing the VW's potential. My grandfather had
an early 70's van & beetle, but sold them both not that long ago.
I have owned both a '69 and '71 bus for over 35 years. So clean and so much original stuff retained. Driving that would blow my mind!
Yep, it is a mind blower 😂
My old 6v crew cab pick up combi used to smoke like that, just the wheels weren’t spinning, eventually a rod ran away and put a spark plug through its battery 😱
That’s a memorable end James T
It committed suicide.
the vehicular equivalent of committing seppuku. It died with honor
Ever heard about helicoil? When some dork has damaged the thread of for instance a sparkplug hole, you insert a far stronger thread. All light alloy racing engines have helicoils installed just in case. Why don't you know these things? You had never lost that sparkplug. No way. You killed that engine yourself. Why?! OMG!
That's why you take better care of your car if its smoking or knocking
Madness in a brilliant way, electric cars with fun and soul. Cant wait for the program.
Did the school pick up and then went to visit the unit. Great reception, mentioned this content and was introduced to Moggy. Then given a tour of the toy shop with my son.
What a great place! I have car envy!
This is amazing 👍
“Target ahead”...🤣🤣...that’s such a bloke thing.
Oh yes 😂
Yes! this is what we want. Ive engineered 35 years in automotive world wide, built ICE cars and bikes, tuned engines. Looked at building EVs for 20 years but figured batteries just didnt exist. When the Tesla Model S P85 came along in UK in 2014 it ticked all the boxes and 92,000 UK miles later I still cant get over how fast and how much fun it is. To take the Tesla drive train and implant into street sleeper classics thats the future hod rod, there is just no fu*king about with a crew cab P100 stuck in ludicrous....genius. Subscribed cant wait for the other shows.....might inspire me to start my Caterham EV with Nissan Leaf rear motor project.
Cheers Graham. Thanks for the sub. Moggy has worked with Westfield to drop an EV in their seven 👍
@@PetrolPed now see what you've done! Kudos! Stay charged!
Hi Ped
WOW😁😁 Bonkers but brilliant. What a great taster for the TV series later in the year. Warmed to Roger already, great guy. Already dismissed one negative, Electric cars can be fun and interesting.🤗🤗
We all know how hard you work, but when you enjoy your work, as I know you do, it’s worth all the effort.
😂😂😂 absolutely brilliant. Bet the ST driver could not believe his eyes with that keeping up with him.
St driver most likely have his/her head under the bonnet ten minutes later!
Nah, any ST driver is used to this situation
As a former petrol head, cars, bikes, jet ski kinda came out of the scene when the police had the power to confiscate your sound install or worse, your pride and joy and crush it.
It’s nice to have that passion reignited with this electric era.
If only I still had my RST S1/2 Escort or my S-type Jag.
Van life ahead, is a consideration once employed, plenty of saving for a EV conversion for the Movano.
Is there anyway I can get involved with your business, your mission, your passion with Ol Skool vehicles with modern technology?
Thanks for sharing, your time and consideration.
Inspiring and brought back a huge smile.
Shame the fiesta turned left lol
Drop Moggy and email 👍
@@PetrolPed on my to do list/radar thanks
Absolutely insane, loved the bit where he caught the ST driver. Deflated ego there!! Just thinking about my T4?
This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen in the automotive world. So cool too this would sell me so many times over than a tesla model anything, any day of the week.
I drives great too 👍
Now THIS could sell more electric vehicles! It's exactly what people need, to realize that the electric drive train swaps can make old, ICE vehicles "green" and fun. The more companies that can engineer "kit" swaps and make the pursuit of goin' electric more inline with old-school hotrod ethos' the the faster it will be embraced. Well done Chaps!
Cheers 👍
How brilliant is that! Pity the fiesta didn't go right!! :D .... very funny!
Sweet!
It would have been nice to see just a little of the innards.
I would love to own that car.
Just up the road from me in mid-Wales. Will be keeping my eyes peeled from now on. Love it!
I have been dreaming of converting a double cab for a long time! Glad to see one properly done! Making me drool!
It is pretty awesome 👏
That looks like a lot of fun, a real “street sleeper”. Be interesting to see some quarter mile times.
Good luck with the business, I think you could be onto something 👏🏻👏🏻
Light duly shed!! Moggy is a real character, looking forward to the TV show👍👍👍
Of I wanted a electric car and had to choose between this car and a Tesla P100, I most definite would choose this crewcab.
I LOVE it!!😎
Shall we push the Fiesta a bite? Yeah, go on then. I had to pause the video until I could clear the tears out of my eyes from laughing!
I love it! I'm in!
My daily driver is an Ioniq and in 2021 I hope to be into a used Kona or an E-Niro.
Ummm....... I think Might needs to give +-pricing & expand his workshop by 4000%.
This kind of quality work is going to keep him seriously busy.
Well done.
Two year wait list currently 😬👍
Absolutely brilliant!!! I have no idea how I missed this until you pointed me this direction. I love Moggy's crew-cab!! Thanks for sharing a closer look at it. Makes me want one of my own all the more.
It is a mega thing 👍
Brilliant. Bet the boy racer had a bit of a surprise.
Mad!! What a ultimate sleeper. The bloke in his Mountune Fiesta just have been mortified :-)
Oh yes 😂
You guys have an amazing idea. Go green and still love vintage car. Thank you for sharing the video.
That thing looks outstanding. VW should take notice and build something like this. Such nice body lines. This design seems so much cooler than the Tesla pyramid "truck" thing. The Tesla truck, hopefully will never be built. I don't want to live in a world with triangular thingys. Curves are beautiful. [Tesla's cars are incredibly curvy and pretty, btw.]
Greetings From 🇺🇸USA, I Never Seen Putting A Tesla Electric Power on the VW Crew Cab. That Looks Great. 👍 🇺🇸🤝🇬🇧
OMG I LOVE this! Thats the ultimate VW crew cab! Keep up the amazing tech!
Man, I have to say, I couldn't handle the right hand drive. When I watch UK videos, I always feel like you guys are driving straight into oncoming traffic! After hundreds of car and motorcycle videos, my brain still can't process the left lane driving, and I always have to brace for impact when you're approaching cars in the opposite lane, because it's so terrifying to watch haha. A left side steering wheel allows your right hand to be free to shift, which is the dominant hand, and you have more coordination. Unless you're one of the 1% of people who are a rich elite, with blue eyes, who is left handed.
It's surprising how quickly you adjust to driving on the opposite side of the road. Happens each time I go OS on holiday
How many ....have replayed the first minute..... Best part of the video !
Lol. I made a comment two years ago… now iam back to watch the video again.
Madness.....absolutely brilliant 😂

Pete that's another vehicle I regret selling my bay window low light. If I could have had 450 hp in it that would have been awesome.
Absolutely brilliant! Classic cars and Van's can be around for ever! 😂👍🌟
Great job guys ! I love these Vdubs !!
That was a brilliant watch ...cannot wait for when the actual program comes to air. Who would have thought that electric would be so much fun.
Lots of folk have known electric conversions are fun... We have been building and drag racing them for many decades now... Check into NEDRA, National Electric Drag Racing Assoc. (America), official sub of NHRA... Join us and smell the plasma! And the burnt rubber. ;)
@@D0li0 Electric traction brings racing back to ordinary people I think.
BTW I've been working with electric traction for many years now. Not quite the same rate of acceleration, 500 tonnes takes a bit longer to get up to speed.
@@mikenewman4078 500 tones? What are you racing? A battleship?
Lots of quirks and features.
I really enjoyed the video,i am VW guy(my first car being a standard 69 beetle).I was skeptical about the idea of electrifying classic cars ,but this looks neat and well done.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Many years ago my uncle had one of these and allowed me to drive it. He was fed up with me saying it needs more guts. This is insane. Wonder what that Escort driver told his mates?
I reckon he kept it quiet 🤫
This is very cool, also loving how Spud takes it all in his stride even when they are giving it some.
Spud is used to Moggies driving 😂
I Love Sleepers as we call them in Australia. Rusty old Datsuns blowing minds.
Fantastic, really enjoyed the vid and look forward to seeing more on these conversions. Well done.
Great to see you both enjoying yourselves so much! See you soon,

this is so cool what a machine wow some works gone into this Van
It sure has 👏
Wow! Insane DK! Such a lovely resto too. Sadly one less for us local enthusiasts to play with. Most of our old Type 2's, both split and bay, have been bought up by non enthusiasts who have capital, and sold overseas. While that is sad, the upside is that they are more likely to have real money thrown at them in other countries, so, cest la vie.
In the interests of accuracy tho... Im 54, born and raised here in South Africa, and I know for a fact that Fire Engines in SA have always been RED. No debate. What this MAY have been is an AIRFORCE Fire vehicle, hence the 'Quick Response" you spoke of. But even since I was in the SAAF in 1984, I dont remember seeing one like that either. I sadly had to sell my 65 Notch, but it did cross my mind to try electric, but much calmer than this pickup! Great vid. Looking forward to that series. Where will it air, given im in SA?
Thanks for this Maarten. Is had been sold to a company that will syndicate it globally. At the moment I am not sure if/when it will air in SA. In is called Vintage Voltage so keep an eye out 👍
I wonder what the driver of the Fiesta ST was thinking as he could not shake you off his tail. He thought he had a Fast Ford but he didn`t did he!!! This looks as though these conversions should bring a lot of laughs and be very successful I hope.
If I saw this keep up with my Fiesta, I would have waved him down to ask about it, because holy heck, that's insanely brilliant. Great job he's done on it.
I found this video a year ago after watching the first season of Vintage Voltage. And I still love this insanely crazy built awesome truck 🛻. This would be the right range for my 3 days a week job 12 hour shifts. Just like Moggy did to the little white car would be me on the interstate 🛣 lol 😂
That’s got to be the best conversion I’ve seen so far I want one
Cheers 👍
Simply great ! My style .... congratulation !
Cheers 👍
I'm in love. Classic VW vans and electric power, 2 of my very favourite things.
Can't believe what he calls beautiful restored.
Petrol ped such a nice fusion! Success for both of you for sure! 👌❤
Nice unit.
Greetings PP. Only 9 seconds in and, holy mother of Pearl, what a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Stonking hell. A great interview, very clever guy. Brilliant. A perfect collaboration of gents, along with a sleek mechanical dream. Top notch.
Top burn out 😜
Yep Utterly Insane....i loved you guys chasing the Fiesta....LOL

That opening shot...you had me right there!!! Looking forward to the TV show so much!!
It’s good to see people like you guys...what an amazing vehicule 😳🤪😂👍
Bloody good job young man and being in South Africa gives a weird kinda thankfulness to you treating an old lady of ours with such ( Dis)respect ? ?
Keep going lad but being 67 now I'll stick to my outdated oil & petrol fumes as l don't want to electrocute myself though l'm currently busy sticking a Lexus V8 into my 69 Mk.1 Escort just for the hell of it.

I laughed so hard through the whole show. I love sleepers and this is the ultimate sleeper.ne I truly wish could afford one.
Thanks Donald 👍
Thanks for explaining how 450 horses for an Early Bay double-cab is "sensible." 😉 Well done, Gents! Best of luck with the new show!
Cheers 👍
Audiophiles would call it 'Headspace' Keeps everything working at 'idle'.
I've been watching the show on the Motor Trend channel here in the US, and enjoy it - the Ghia in particular, because I loved my Ghia and spent many happy days twiddling the engine, putting on dual carbs, catching it on fire, etc. The Chesil Speedster was pretty cool, as well. The show has a good mix of characters, and the fabrication method is a cross between back yard experimentation and enthusiast/pro work, just as I recall when I fitted a Chevy V8 to an old 1954 Healey 100-4 back in the '60s. Sleepers are super fun to drive - particularly for the expression on the victim's face - like the dropped open jaw on a Porsche driver after being properly smoked by that Chevy-Healey. This bus would be a real gas (no pun intended) if you had an old 2 piece case 36 HP beetle engine in the back that you could show victims, pretending as if it were the reason why you just blew past them with tires smoking. "You have to know how to tune these VW engines, mate - then you can really make them run!" Had a '59 VW Van that this setup would have been a lot of fun to put in. Good luck with the show - it's great!
Great to hear you are enjoying the show :-)
Awesome vid Pp, what a bus. Love putting the ST to rights 😁👏
I love that body style and paint.
Cool isn't it 👍
That looked as if you started in Slough and went towards Maidenhead or High Wycombe. What an amazing van.
We were in Newtown Mid Wales 👍
@@PetrolPed shows how wrong I can be. But parts of Slough do look like the start of your journey.
I loved his welding story 😱
This has got the making of a great TV show 👍
Yep...it is great. Can't wait for people to see it 👍
Love it, is all I can say, well done. Moggy is a champ.
I have a 2010 Caddy (yes I know it's not a classic) and I would love to do some Electrification to it.
If only Moggy did a kit for it. cheers
Drop him a line 👍
All seems pretty reasonable to me. I mean, my old Type 2 camper used to give about 28 mpg at best. So swapping the aircooled Vdub engine for a 450bhp Tesla set up was the right thing to do. Now you have infinite mpg and completely bonkers, I mean infinitely reasonable performance and load pulling capacity!
Great vid. Love this idea.
Hi Pete, very interesting. Hope you have a awesome week
Checkin' in from California. Nice ride, simply brilliant! subbed!
Thanks for the sub mate and welcome to the channel 👍
It would be fun to have that setup in a Type 3 square back!
Or a Karmann Ghia. Killer looks and killer powerrrrr!

Welsh based British engineering at its best. Awesome. I know where to get my car converted when my petrol car gives up.
Holy crap, lost for words. I WANT ONE NOW LOL 😂
Our friend Ken's dad had a Beetle back around 78. We actually used to call it Ken's Volts back then, obviously not electric powered.
Nice build, amazing performance!
Absolutely banging. Loved the child in plastic rollerskate trying to escape 🤣
I wanna see that program. I use electric myself and know it is the future.
You should be able to find it on catch up. In the UK it is on Quest and in the US on Motortrend. It is coming soon to other countries 👍
Petrol Ped, there was actually an electric T2 in 1972 .It only had 30HP and a range of 80 km . It was meant for post service on Langeoog, Wangerooge, Juist and Baltrum where no cars are allowed. Some were also offered to electricity services. Less than 100 were built.
Wow nicer crew cab a vw that i want just because of its power
Brilliant machine well done. Cant help thinking it needs seat headrests, the strong acceleration might give unwary passengers whiplash.
HA! True... Hadn't noticed.
Souvenir!
Take it to the drag strip!
wow - sick !! And his converted VW Beetle has 600hp !
He has and it is MENTAL 😳😂
Beautiful Type 2. Open a shop in the USA there would be a lot old Vw guys waiting in line.
A vehicle as bonkers as it's creator, by the looks of it and all the better for it. Great restomod. Looking forward to seeing more content like this.
Absolutely loved this Pete! Electrons are the future, particularly in classic vehicles!!! Can’t wait to see the series!
Wow, I used to have one of these! Mine was yellow, ex Dutch post office. it had hoops on the back and canvas like a covered wagon. Carried 6 and all that space in the back and under the back seat and was only a couple of inches longer than the Beetle. I loved that thing. Why isn't VW producing these?
Insane and then some WOW , I had to share on my facebook
Cheers Lee 👍
Hi. Love the bus. Living in SA and also have one. Sadly still air-cooled 🇿🇦👍👍
A concept I had was of attaching a single cab bed, replacing the double cab bed, mounting the body to a custom four wheel drive frame (with dually's?), adding a V8 engine (diesel?) behind the cab (radiator shroud under back seat), with a roll up/down rear window (and partial bus hatch?).
The full bed length would be widened to cover the dually's and enlarge the storage space (treasure chest) and make room for the features, ie: a fold away two ton hoist, custom roll off truck bed,
removable dump bed (when needed), removable goose neck and fifth wheel hitches,swap-able winch (front to rear), compressor, generator, mig welder and other equipment.
The goal would be to have a multi-purpose vehicle for a farmer, junk yard shopper, recycler /scraper, scavenger or getting an off-roader pulled out and repaired enough to get home, etc... ;-)
I have to say though going electric would be a possibility if capable of a 300+ mile range. ;-)
Anything is possible, don't think for one second that you can't achieve your end goal with electrification.
stay away from VWs YOU MONSTER! LOL
