- In this episode we take a look at a 1966 Volkswagen Bus we recently converted to electric. This Bus uses our Tesla Six Pack battery option with a Hyper 9 motor. One of the biggest questions we get from our customers on these buses is "What other modifications do I need to make to my Bus for the conversion. There are three critical options you should consider when converting your early Bus. Check out the video to find out.

What a beautiful and respectful conversion of such iconic vehicle. Good to go for another 50 years, I reckon… Well done, guys!
Very nicely done, if, IF I ever win the lottery I'll have one done similar to this.
You explain these conversions so much better than the old cooky guy who just skips thru it haha. Don't fire him, just put him back on changing old VW brake pads or something. haha
Great video and clean install!!! Great restoration and thanks for sharing. I learned so much.
You guys do great work! I would love to do a conversion like this one day.
So far what I can see, is good to know and save. You guy's are doing a good job, and I'm happy to work with you.
I really enjoy these VW BUS videos. Our ultimate goal with our 64 Double Door Bus(petrol power) is to someday travel to EV WEST for an EV make over.
Nicely done!! And I understand at a personal level what it is to go "cattywampus" in a vehicle or motocross bike. Ok when you can stay ahead of it, not so good otherwise.
I got my Splitty '64 up to 85mph once, on reduction boxes. But it was downhill, in neutral, it was terrifying and it nearly fell over 😳
Awesome!
If modern cars could be converted to EV there would be more people interested in this movement.
You should convert the tires to airless tires.
Hybrid engines can run on almost anything. She can run on Orange Juice or water.
not quite but almost
Excelente como sempre.
Como eu gostaria de transformar meu fusca 1972 em elétrico, ele é todo original e agora em 2022 completou 50 anos na minha família.
Forte abraço

You guys do amazing work. What are your thoughts on the Ford Eluminator motor? Any plans to try one out? Thanks.
hippie car + electric car = groovy
Nice motor box, I would ride it without the door.
Nice looking bus! Question guys, with the original gear box, if you down shift to 3rd, do you get more power regenerated?
Looks beautiful! Are there options or a way to get a VW bus like this more than 100 mile range?
I would love to convert my 1940 Ford pick up
Very nice.
Is there a bolt in kit for the Vanagon? I have a subi swapped one in New Zealand but can't wait to go EV
What a great conversion, the neat thing with the reduction gear is the tail lifts when you take off very fast. Why are you not using the area where the gas tank is normally. Beautiful bus.
The former fuel bay is exactly where the sixpack is located.
@@markcbrems Look at where it is to the hyper nine and when he shows the mounts there on the area directly above the motor. If you have ever owned one, the gas tank is further back behind the bulkhead of the engine bay of the bus. It might take up some of where the gas tank is but it sure doesn't look to me. I accidentally drilled a hole into my tank on my VW Bus.
The battery box goes quite a bit further forward than is shown in the video. It takes up most all of the space that the fuel cell normally would. We are all split bus owners here at EV West, and none of us have ever drilled into out tanks. At least no one is copping out to it.
@@tomsummers1137 I took the tank out and welded the hole shut, no big deal. We did it on bug gas tanks all the time. Are the Tesla batteries laying down or on end in that box?
I’ve owned two 1970 Vans, bought my second one in Cal and drove it back across the country to Fl when I transferred there via Millington TN.
@@markcbrems there and above the engine space.
Lovely build. Would love to know if there is any advantage having the original 4 speed in regards to battery consumption. Do you use less charge on the highway in 4th ?
I love it and want my own custom 25 window spiltscreen samba replica (15 window fitted with 10 skylights & sunroof) the 1 thing I think is a bit contradictive is that the onwer wanted to keep totally stock but did a EV conversion surely if you really wanted to keep totally bone stock you wouldn't do a ev conversion.
Beautiful conversion build. On the subject of getting cattywampus, how noticeable is the rear weight bias with the battery box located behind the rear wheels as opposed to being located under the bench seat behind the driver? Still curious about what that feels like going through the turns...
Of course the closer the weight is to the original center-of-gravity of the bus, the better the handling will be. We may be adding a bit more weight to an already rear-weighted vehicle, but we are also moving that weight just a bit forward over the axle, rather than behind it (like the original). Check out this perfect description from the previous 21 Window conversion:

@@markcbrems Thanks for the info, Mark.
Does not stink! Love it!! What size fuses do you have between the onboard charger and the Tesla pack? Keep the eye candy coming.
ATM 30A.
Mark Brems Thanks. My EVSE charger runs at 40 amps, but from what I can tell ATM fuse holders are only rated for max 30 amps. Thoughts?
👏👏
MORE‼️…..MORE‼️……. MORE‼️……please 😂
So excited to do this conversion on my bus once I get to the figuring out drivetrain. Is there any reason that this set up couldn't be run with your 2 speed trans (with long axles and tubes), no reduction boxes and flipped spindles up front with discs? What rear brakes would you suggest?
Exactly the description of the previous 21 Window. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/OQ8Ru5qo_Qg/v-deo.html
Any updates on the Porsche 914 for UA-cam? Perhaps a Part 2 soon?
@ 11:54 I see the ZElectricMotors hanging in the back window... Is there a connection now with EVWest and ZElectric? Thanks!
Excellent, very nice and informative video. Likewise, very beautiful VW bus. My question is, "can you or have you installed air-conditioning on these buses? is it OK or practical?
Yes to AC. You can check with the sales team at EV west using sales@evwest.com they can answer the specific questions you have. Drew - EV West Media Manger
I might have missed the answer in the video, but what is the typical mile/kw people are getting out of their EV Bus conversions?
Wow this is awesome. I'd love to do this conversion to my bus, its fully stock at present (67 11 window). I'm very impressed with the six pack managing to fit in the engine bay/fuel tank space. Is there potential to fit more under the bus (between chassis rails) to give greater range?
Anywho as I'm in the UK no chance to bring my bus over to you. Do you do kits?
One solution is to lay the batteries flat on the floor behind the driver in the passenger cabin. Check that scheme out here: ua-cam.com/video/TgfBIWbsWKU/v-deo.html
@@markcbrems Thanks Mark. Not the greatest fan of battery cells in the useable cabin space myself. I do like the idea of them fitted under the floor though:

also, the front brakes do most of the stopping.
My Mazda makes that noise now, the electric rx8 I’m working on

I have a 74 Westfalia with the 3 speed automatic transmission. Would I need the 2 speed transaxle? Thank you
Automatics are tricky and can be temperamental, so we try to steer away from them. A two-speed should bolt right in.
If a good working VW bus is $20k, how much would the entire EV conversion cost w/ labor roughly?
Are you doing just VWs? I did send you guys an email, but never got a reply, regarding my conversion plans?
How much weight is added to rear end? My front end would lift if I put a load at the back of the van.

3:11 aren’t those portal axles?! It gives higher ground clearance without a lift.
Yes. Like in my old Unimog, and in the original Hummer. The only way to get clearance for the axle and differential (which can be smaller since it transmits lower torque). For Unimog's, you can find "fast portals" with different gearing; this bus needs fast portals for proper highway speed, if there were such a thing.
Does EV West sell battery boxes? I don't see any on the website.
I suggest calling.
I don't see the "six-pack" on your website.
Call for pricing.

Tesla batteries and HyPer™, WarP™, ImPulse™ and TransWarP™ Motors will have to do until dilithium crystal and nacelle kits become more readily available.
Who knew Rob Lowe knew so much about EVs
Shucks. If you knew what Rob knows....
A 1600 twin port is pretty much the most power you would entertain using along with reduction boxes. This is silly, the amount of money this cost, the first thing I would do is convert to irs and a better gearbox
It making noise is not impressive. Make it silent. Then I’ll be impressed.
Ruining one Classic at a time. Those burn outs have not anything to do with the basic EV idea of being nice to the environment. Hippocrates all the way
