  • Today I find out all of the hidden features of my early 996 generation Porsche 911. Similar to how Neo had his eyes opened in the Matrix, I enter the Porsche Matrix and see what I simply didn't before.

    I have owned several Air Cooled Porsches for 50 years. Yes ! I loved them all. But the A/C was pitiful if it had it. Now I LOVE my 1999 996 Gen 1 water cooled 911. As I live in the deep south, I finally have ICE COLD A/C. GLORIOUS !! W/ only 52K on the clock. New IMS and everything involved with engine out. I'm SO Happy !! This one is a KEEPER ! I drive it everyday !! Love It !!

      Very true, if you need good A/C the water-cooled Porsches work quite a bit better.

    We don't need a glove box! Although, I gotta admit, it was a very strange decision to make by Porsche.
    Nice short video though.
    Love the 996 911, the fact that its going up in value just makes owning it that bit better.

      I believe the decision to have no glove box had to do with the passenger side air bag and they hadn’t figured out how to get it and a glove box in the dash in the early 996s.
      Glad you enjoyed the video.

    It’s amusing how the complete owner’s manual with the case doesn’t really fit on the shelf.
    Also I didn’t know about the fog lights for the first year of ownership.
    The no glovebox reminds me of my old 350Z 😂

    • @OurRideLife
      @OurRideLife  Рік тому +1

      Good point about the entire owner’s manual not fitting well. Perhaps it fit better when it was new like when you try to put something back in the box.
      Yes, those fog lights are not intuitive.

    Thate passenger tissue stowage is actually for the factory umbrella.

      Thanks for adding that information. My car is a California car and I lived in California most of my life (outside of living in New Zealand when I was younger and recently moving to Florida), and rain was pretty rare in California, so I didn’t even own an umbrella, but makes sense.

    I actually just figured out about my fogs as well in my 996 lol

      My 986 Boxster had the same thing, so I found out about it when I owned that car, but I owned it about five years before I realized it had fog lights.

    How is life in Florida with the 996? My family and I are contemplating the move from So Cal to Tampa/Clearwater/Orlando (options of the 3).

    • @OurRideLife
      @OurRideLife  Рік тому +3

      I personally have enjoyed living in Florida and we just made it through our first hurricane. Where we are located just North West of Orlando we didn’t get much damage from the storm because it shifted more south of us, but Orlando and parts south did get some bad flooding in some locations. Even though it sounds bad it is great to see how folks offer what they have to help when prepping for a hurricane. It gave my boys an opportunity to help others as we were filling sandbags and were able to help others carry some to their cars.
      For the 996 there are some nice back roads and the freeways don’t normally get as backed up as in California. The roads in most of Central Florida are very well maintained and there are two Porsche dealerships in the Orlando area if you ever need anything that is only available at the dealership. If you like theme parks they are huge here. My personal favorite single theme park is Disneyland in California, but Epcot is a close second and is a lot of fun for adults, if you have never visited.
      I’ve been to Tampa a few times and the parts I have visited were quite nice. They seem to keep getting missed by hurricanes, so that seems to be good if you want beach front property.
      Coming from California, there are a few more bugs (although Disney somehow keeps them away) as well as the gators and snakes. You need a good pest guy and if you fence in your backyard it can help keep the wildlife out.
      In the summer there is more humidity, but often it does rain in the afternoon for a short time and that will cool it down from 90 degrees to mid-70’s which is quite comfortable for a few hours. After hurricane Ian passed it has been mid-70’s and low 80’s with lower humidity which has been very nice. The winter is largely like that, or so I’m told.
      Even the humid summers at least in the Orlando area haven’t been too bad, but I did live in the Central Valley for a while, so I figure that living in the Fresno area prepped me for this. But then any larger home will usually have two A/C units (and yet my energy bills have been about the same as my smaller house with solar panels was in California) and that keeps things very comfortable.
      Gas is also much cheaper (I paid $3.03 a gallon for regular in our family car today). You can also get ethanol free gas at some stations.
      I don’t get political, but no matter your politics I like the cleaner area and lack of Graffiti on the freeways at least in most of central Florida (I haven’t yet explored much south of here, so don’t know if that is the same or worse). At least all the parts that I have visited have been very clean, with the exception of the one time I drove into downtown Orlando to a furniture shop and I found the bad area of town, but they hide it well from the freeway. Interestingly it was not that far from a very nice area where Steph Curry recently bought a home. So, I’m personally researching to make sure I vote to improve things and not let them go down hill.
      Hope that helps a bit and sorry for the short book. If you do end up in Florida perhaps we’ll see each other at some car event. If you happen to spot a middle aged guy with a beard checking out old Porsches, come over and say hi. I know I’m planning to be at Amelia Island this coming year, so you never know.

      @@OurRideLife wow I did not expect this reply but truly appreciate the time and thoughts behind it. California has really declined in many ways, probably most of the country unfortunately, that’s why I asked. I’ve followed your journey from your 986 to 996 cars (I formerly owned a 986 a few years back) and miss it. I currently own a VW GTI mk7 (my Porsche wannabe) as my daily commuter and mini family hauler w/ two kids. Look fwd to your content!

      Apparently, when you buy a car in California you have no idea as there is never any rain. Now that I live in Florida, I wish I had that umbrella.

    You made me go to my car in garage to look for the shelf..... Lol. I don't have one. Maybe because mine is Rhd. My daughter is moving to Orlando next month.

    • @OurRideLife
      @OurRideLife  Рік тому +1

      I’ll have to find out if they don’t have them in a RHD car. I know with my 986 I accidentally took it off while working on something else in the area, so they can be removed.
      Awesome that your daughter is moving to Orlando and by then the flooding from the hurricane that affected parts of Orlando should be much better. If you are ever visiting her and go to a car event and happen to see a middle aged man with a beard that is continuing to gain grey hairs, feel free to say hi. I’m hoping to be at Werks Reunion at Amelia Island this next year if you happen to be in the area.

      I know my old 986 Boxster had it but it came off at one point and I had it sitting in a shelf, so perhaps something like that happened to it. Otherwise, interesting if it isn’t on all of them.
