      I also hated the 996 until I bought a 997 in 2008. After owning the 997 for a while, I began to appreciate the streamlined shape of the 996. Now, a decade later, my earlier disdain for the 996 seems a distant memory. In fact, I completely forgot my hate and recently bought a clean 996 cab with a tiptronic and I love it.

    I drive a tiptronic. Keep the revs high, 4k+ and the tip makes no difference. Drive it hard, and it makes sense. Then you have the auto option for driving in town or in traffic.

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  3 роки тому

      Yes agree - drive it hard and that’s the sweet spot. I personally noticed that lack of crisp shifting but overall, still a ripping car that you can hold at high revs and have an absolute ball! (And go plenty quick).

    I own a 2000 C2 in silver with aero kit. I really have come to respect it and after sitting in a 992 ( not that I can afford one) at a Porsche dealership realised how small nimble and beautifully analog it feels. My Wife thought the 992 was way too big and I wouldn’t say it was good looking. I certainly wouldn’t swop it for mine no matter how much money I had!

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  3 роки тому

      And that’s the thing Chris! I’m the same with my 964. There are other 911’s I could have for similar money that would “perform better” but you know when you’ve found the right car. It’s exactly as you just put it - you wouldn’t swap yours as it’s become more than just a car.

    • @KrustyKlown

    I have a 1999 colbalt cab with a tip and I've drove that thing to the max. the torque converter always keeps the power going to the wheels. You don't need to watch shifts. just hit it as hard as possible, keep the balance, and use your clutch foot to pin you in the seat. The IMS ain't a joke though. $22k later, I drive it a little nicer.

    @Last Rasp, Love your channel. I was also a hater of the 996 like most Porschephilles when it dared to push its way to the forefront of the 911 evolutionary chain. After an air cooled 3.2 Carrera, my next 911 was to be a 964 or 993, it seemed the natural progression for me. All these years later, I recently purchased my 'keep for life' 911. When I finally came over to the water cooled dark side, I was hell bent on buying a 997. But I slowly fell in love with the 996. Cheeky bastard with those bloody fried egg headlights, cheap plastic interior and IMS issues. My 1999 Carrera C4 is a minter, and it was a sure bet I would buy it the day I flew down to view, test drive & inspect. Everything sorted, IMS retro upgrade included. With only 64,000kms on the clock, it looks & feels like new. For me, it had to be a 996.1. It really is an uncomplicated, elegant & classic design. Thanks Pinky Lai, you got it just right.

      Hey Allan. Your 996 sounds great! Lots of similarities with the 964 in the way the car handles etc. Would have to say I much prefer the sound of the 964. I put that down to a combination of the air cooled engine and also the manual transmission makes shifts much more punchy and immediate. While the horsepower numbers are higher for the 996 I didn't think it felt super fast - think the straight line performance would be similar. The steering the 996 was much nicer than my 964 - I suspect that may be on account of me having the C4.

    It's good to hear more appreciation of the 996 coming through, I've always gone for the underdog and in reality the "ugly duckling" was the first all new model since 1964. A huge leap of faith Porsche had to take to survive and doubled their sales. More of a Phoenix!!!!!

    I’ve seen more and more positive buzz about the 996 over the last year and a half, especially in vintage Porsche circles. The further away we get from the analog feeling of the older 911’s such as the 996 and before, the more people will seek them out. Yes, the headlights were pretty brutal at the time but I feel they’re now a quirky feature that’s kind of cool to look at.

I own one of each car , two generations before and after the 996 ie: 964 and 991. 991 is a BIG step change from the the 996 whereas the 964 and 996 don't feel that far apart (in spite of change from AC to WC).

    Loved your video Andy, I found it very informative thoughtful.
    I have a 2004 996 Manual Carrera Cabrio myself and I think it's an absolute hoot to drive. I'm over the funny headlights and I think it's a crap reason not to buy a 996. Mine has Black 19" wheels upgrade, Exhaust and Evolution Airbox upgrade. It makes a cracking sound when you cold start and even creates an overrun crackle when changing gears. Im not sure if the suspension is original but feels like it needs new shocks/coil overs? I get lots of nods from bystanders when they hear the noise from the unusual exhaust sound when I drive it around even at low speeds. I would like to add a GT3 rear wing like your friend has done on his. As you said in your video Andy, it is a real 911 and a significant car in the history of Porsche 911's. I previously had a 2005 Boxster S Tiptronic and loved it also. that gearbox can be fun when you use it well, especially on drives as I have on the Great Ocean Road. and Otway Ranges.

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  3 роки тому

      Love your thinking Antony! As a design tragic I couldn't understand Porsche's decision to change the headlights back when the 996 was released. Of course we now know it was the beginning of a real change in their production techniques - part of a shift to more efficient methods of production. But beyond the practical reasons for the introduction of the fried eggs, ultimately I believe the years have been kind to them and I like them both as a piece of industrial design and as well as the fact that they make the 996 as a stand out 911. You car sounds like a great example and it sounds like you love it too. That sounds like a win to me!

    Stock Tiptronic steering wheel & shift buttons, are BETTER than paddles, once ya get used to those buttons. The buttons let you shift up or down using either hand, with a full grip on the wheel. When I first got my car, I wanted to modify it to paddles .. then after driving for a while, I realized Porsche wasn't so dumb.

Got pulled for speeding by a cop with a dash-mounted radar gun....126Kph in a 100Kph zone, whoops! He was a good bloke though, soon sussed out that I was a pom and said as long as I didn't come back to the state of Victoria within 12 months the ($180!! ticket) would be disregarded. Let's just say that the next time my wife and visited Aus it was NSW!! Haven't been arrested yet. Mind you, that was 1998. Loving the 911 vibe, current wheels an Iris blue 6-speed manual 1996 993 Carrera 2. Had a 964 Carrera 4 back in the 90's. Couple of 944s (Lux and an S2), 928S4 and GTS plus 2.5 and 2.7 986 and 2.7 987 Boxster. All lovely motors in their different ways. Have crossed to the dark side with a few Ferrraris (328GTB, 360 Modena, F355 Berlinetta and recently a 456GT) but still love that raw air-cooled flat 6 vibe! The taco rear spoiler is unique and best looking

    Super video. The quality is amazing!
    Two questions since I’m considering doing / changing it at my 996:
    - is this GT3 body kit aftermarket or OEM? In case aftermarket, how is the fitment and where did your friend purchase the kit?
    - I see that there’s no airbag light on the dash, despite having a non-airbag steering wheel? How did your friend fix that? And are the indicated stalks going back to ‘neutral’ after turning?
    Apologies for the detailed questions.
    Regards from Europe!

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  3 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks for the comment! The body kit is all OE. I believe it was sourced through local second hand sellers as items became available.
      Not sure how he solved the airbag light - suspect that’s a fix an auto electrician could make. And no, the indicator doesn’t turn itself off 😂

    I own both transmissions and I can tell u a manual gearbox shits all over a tiptronic except in heavy traffic conditions

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  2 роки тому

      No doubt that's true. That said, this wasn't a vid comparing the manual vs the tip. Of course the manual wins! For me it was about trying a 996 and learning that a well set up 996 is a fantastically fun car (that would of course be enhanced with a manual transmission). Thanks for the comment 👌🏼

    A minority position, but I prefer the 996 lights. Never have liked the round lights, I never even entertained the idea of buying a 911 until I discovered the 996. Now I own one.

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  Рік тому +1

      I owned a PDK (991.1 C2S) and loved it to be honest. Really enjoyed how rapid the shifts were - something the tipper isn't able to compete with in my view. That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the tip once you get used to it.

      @@lastrasp heard a fair amount of issues with the pdk maintenance and the tip is straight forward by comparison and a heap cheaper to maintain but I hear you on shift speed sure but foot planted on a well serviced tip shifts plenty fast
