My Catch2Carve Series showcases my efforts to catch as many species of fish in Washington State with a fly rod, and then carve a replica of each to remember the adventure. Thanks Andrew! I feel really fortunate to have some awesome places to hike and fish close to home up here. The fish might not be too big (at least the trout), but they sure are gorgeous and add to the adventure for sure. Up next is a westslope cutthroat trout that's in the works. Thanks for watching!
@@RiverbendWoodworks yeah, trout fishing is one of my favorite here where I live. You can really go far with this series as there is a decent number of fish species haha. Do some more trout and then move on to bass and panfish. It would be cool to see you carve some walleye, Perch and Pike as well.

What kind of paint are you using? The labels go by to quickly to catch.

I primarily use paints by a company named Golden. Their air brush paints are really, really great to work with. They also make some high quality acrylics for hand painting details as well.

I did, actually! On some carvings I do seem to get moving along too fast and have missed it before, especially smaller carvings. Certainly something that should be accounted for.

Looks awesome! Do u do any carvings for "customers" ?? I caught a 20.5 inch male rainbow the other day and my very next cast I caught his hen at 18.5 inches.... I want to get the 2 of them mounted together for a tabletop display with a small section of riverbed material underneath them and maybe a piece of driftwood placed in behind them. Your work looks like its top notch to me, what would u charge to do a 2 fish carving as I described??

Sounds great I will email you with a picture of what I had in mind , I have several pictures of the 2 fish from that day so I will include some of those also. I had tossed around the idea of a regular skin mount but I think a wood carving would be the way to go for longevity.
Nothing short of excellent! How long would you say that took you to complete the whole thing? How long for just the scales? Also, what did you use to attach the fins? Thanks for showing your craft. Lots of great techniques.
Overall, I'd say I have roughly 16 hours into the carving as you see it. Making the mount would add to that a bit, so around 20 hours total might be on the high end. You can figure the rough carving of the fish (from block of wood to rough shape) was about 1.5-2 hours. Scale details about 4 hours or so (and tedious work), finish prep sanding, etc. is another few hours, painting took about 4 total (it's faster than you may think, then mounting it takes an hour or so. The fins for this were attached using a product called SculptWood. It's on Amazon and worked really well! It's a two-part epoxy that has a nice medium wood color to it and carves very well. what is that putty brand you put around the eyes? looks like some kinda of two part epoxy. Glad to see you’ll be making more fish carving videos.
It feels great to be back at some fish carvings these days, and the next one is going to be something really, really cool! Stay tuned! As for the putty, it's a product called Sculpt Wood, which is a two-part epoxy putty. I didn't mention it in the video because it was the first time using it, so I want to make sure it can hold up. That said, it's great! Sands easy, primes and paints great, too. I recommend it over the usual Bondo.
Would you consider doing this type of work for customers? I have a wood carving of a rainbow that I would like repainted. Trouble is finding someone good enough to do it correctly.
Great question, and I use to be able to do such requests, however nowadays time is the limiting factor. I’m afraid i just don’t have enough time, currently, to be able to take on projects right now (though it sounds cool!).
I WANT TO MAKE A GIANT RAINBOW TROUT SCULPTURE AND THEN PUT IT IN A GARDEN. THIS FISH SCULPTURE WOULD BE 35 TIMES BIGGER THAN THE REAL RAINBOW TROUT. IT MEANS THIS GIANT RAINBOW TROUT WOULD BE AS BIG AS A DRAGON BOAT. SOME FLOWERS AND PLANTS WOULD AROUND IT
I KNOW A SIMILAR GARDEN EXISTS IN USA. THERE ARE SOME GIANT FISH SCULPTURES IN THIS GARDEN. IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS GARDEN, A GIANT PIKE FISH IS A FISHING MUSEUM INSIDE.

Hola, uso pintura con aerógrafo de una empresa llamada Golden. Tienen muchas buenas opciones de color y fluyen muy bien en el aerógrafo. ¡Espero que esto ayude!

You use a Dremel? What Dremel or number set up is it?
Hi Thomas, Yes, I use a Dremel 9001 setup, but I would actually steer clear of it for the type of grinding needed for carving like this. I've been unable to get replacement parts for this unit at all, and it literally was mothballed for over a year and they still have no common-wear parts like the hand-held unit and the flex shaft. What you see is a cheap Chinese model flex shaft that I Frankensteined to fix and function (barely). I highly recommend going with something like a Foredom flex shaft. These seem to be the gold standard for woodcarvers, and parts are readily available. A small handheld Dremel is helpful as well, however.
