  • Today I'll be showing you tiny house dos and don'ts as I walk you through what it has been like to live with my tiny house for the last 2 years. This tiny house / cabin was built by me with trees found right here where the cabin sits using my Woodland Mills portable sawmill. At the time I wanted to make a tiny house / cabin that had good insulation and heat for year-round use. I also wanted to ensure that there would be a dedicated loft for sleeping and lots of light for an open feeling. Despite the small floors space, the layout of this tiny house accomplished my goals but that doesn't mean there isn't anything I wouldn't change about it. Tune it today to find out what those things are that I think could be fixed up and improved on if I were to have built this tiny house over again. The good thing about having things I"d like to change with this tiny house / cabin is that this gives me an excuse to build another one! Thanks for tuning in today folks, hope all is well out there! Here we go!

Years ago my Father and I built built a house in the north woods using salvaged logs from an 1880 Finnish house and barn. The farmer was taking the buildings down to farm the land where they sat with plans to salvage the logs for fence posts. My Father was "lost" on unmarked country roads trying to to find an auction when he noticed the buildings and bought the logs for the farmer assessed value as fence posts for $600. Neighbors sawmilled trees from our property for the lumber part of our rebuild. Mold grew on everything as this was a drawn out project where we worked on intermittent extended weekends. I noticed there appears to be considerable mold in your building but not nearly as bad as ours was. As a house painter I had some experience with mold removal using household bleach. So I used a pump up sprayer to spray the whole building inside and outside with 1 part standard household bleach to 3 to 4 parts water. A water- fire- mold damage remediation contractor told me he uses 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. I use a full face respirator with chlorine rated filter cartridges and wear a cheap plastic rain suit with hood, any clothes I wear have been saved from the fire for 1 last use. I put plastic down to keep from spotting the floor boards which had been planed. I could have sprayed the floor first then worked my way up the walls and sprayed the ceiling while backing up toward the door.. For us this was a dramatic night to day transformation. The outside has now many years of mold growth and I have plans to bleach it again and then saturate the exterior with homemade water repellent preservative finish. For smaller projects without a full face respirator I think it is always worthwhile to wear a half face mask with the chlorine rated filters and goggles Very easy to test bleach effect on small cutoff samples. A warm breezy summer day, take out all the screens open all the windows and spray away. Without a full face respirator your eyes will tell you when it is time to retreat. wipe down windows - doors asap I have never seen any damage to glass or plastic from bleach but nowadays there may be films? on the glass, spotable metal parts? Bleach is pretty active stuff. Nice build. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.

I built a 2000 Sq ft house in WV and added lofts in it at the last minute to take advantage of the 20 ft ceilings. Didn’t consider how to get up there. I’m fighting the ladder situation too. Tried to install a crank stair case but it weighed so much the trusses wouldn’t take it. I have a WM LT50 super and did my walls the same way, No drywall at all. Thanks for your ideas, I’m gonna make a flitch rack like yours. Great idea. I heat with the wood from the mill too. I edge all my boards after they air dry to 15 percent. Best Kindling wood in the world, will also cut nicely in that rack. Wrap a bungee around it before u cut it. Keeps in nice bundles. Larry

During the summer time I don't have an air conditioner or forced air conditioner I do it like they did back in the old days you know the windows were about 8 in or 9 in from the ceiling and about 2 ft from the floor I opened the bottom window about 2 in and the top of the window I drop it down cool air comes in pushes the hot air out and it makes it drop about 10 or 15° difference

Hi -- Well done, I enjoy all of your videos. 2 comments please -- #! -- I may have tried to install a 3-way switch in the loft, so if you want to turn those lights on or off, you would not have to crawl to the foot of the bed, (reading etc) I assume there is such a thing as a 12 volt 3-way, don't know about that) #2 Re; Insulation - I would have used RockWool insulation.Solves the "pink" colour problem and eliminates the tar paper, plus better thermals and much better moisture resistance. It could still do with some sort of a kitchenette setup.. possibly even a hot water system based around the wood stove flu... I would think about putting the kitchenette where you were sitting and finding a way to move the stove further into the corner and while you are at it have it sit on a wood store to raise it so it is more useable as a cooking surface... For water storage I would look into back hoe-ing a 7-8 feet deep hole on the uphill end of the cabin to drop in a 275 gal IBC tote as the water tank and insulate the crap out of the top of said tank ... If you use one of those non freeze out door standing taps and pressurize the IBC tank with compresses air it would be hard to get it broke due to frost...

Hey buddy how are ya? I sure love the tiny house!! I have a spot picked out to build mine as soon as I get my mill. I to will be building on a down slope. We have a lot of ponderosa pine and cedar here where I live. So that what I’ll build with. Thanks for mentioning the black landscape cloth that’s a great idea. I will also use a couple of solar panels to keep a battery charged up, like in the hillbilly hide out. I’ve been dreaming of getting the sawmill for years now, I need to sell my m35a2 deuce and a half first before I buy the sawmill. “One dream paying for the next” any way thank you so much for sharing you adventures with us. What give me the indication that there is something going on with power is the low voltage power of LD lights yes 110 goes in but it's converted down to almost a quarter watt to make it work I have dropped my electricity down from 40 to 50 dollars a month

  • @ClanMcCormick

First, love the work and dedication and the humbleness to realize you are not a one man know everything machine! To further what @James Kringlee said, I think getting a 12v fan and maybe fashioning some scoops with a screen to go over the windows to keep it airing out when not in use. Then seal it up when you are there and want to keep it warm/cool, otherwise keep that guy open to breath!
You have sort of created a mold bomb with the vapour barrier keeping the moisture in the cabin. So figuring out a way to keep the air moving and getting out of there with it being green wood over the next few years. In one side and pushed out the other side with a fan to help keep it moving.
I built a small bunkie but used kiln dried, I did almost everything you said short of the black fabric. But, I made mine really breathable, full roof vent, made sure I didnt do a very tight seal with the vapour barrier, just using it to hold in the bats and some of the heat from my little heater.
    Good luck!

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  3 роки тому

Thanks for tuning in. I keep two windows cracked open when I’m not in there for air flow. All the windows have screens so I’m able to open them when needed for more air flow. The cabin is built just like a house in terms of vapour barrier so I make sure to keep the air flowing for sure

That's quite unusual running your insulated chimney all the way down to the stove top! Up to 20' of exposed single wall inside your living space can only improve heating efficiency and add that much more heat to your living space. More typically, one uses a ceiling support kit and the transition from single wall to insulated double-wall chimney is made there. Moving up, the insulated chimney only needs to extend (outside) 2' above anything within a 10' radius. :)

Ladders for cabins and tiny houses are always a question. One advantage of a shed roof (or other complex variants of that) is that one can slide the ladder all the way to the side, or one can build in stairs along the side wall. But then it's harder to get the steep roof pitch, which has drawbacks especially in a snowy environment like yours.

This is a very nice and informative video as it shows the effects of settling wood after the build has been completed a while back.
    Three questions I have are:
    1) How many trees did you use in this build?
    2) How many man hours or working hours or days were put in?
    3) How much did it costed to build this?
I am thinking of building my own cabin here in Finland and will appreciate if you answer my questions.

Thanks for joining the channel Mickey! I just used a single nail in the centre of the board to allow for shrinkage unless it was for interior walls where I just used 2" finish nails and nailed them as normal. After several years the boards are drying and the nails give enough that they don't cause cracking.

Did you make your coffee table? It looks like a natural cut slab. I had thoughts about the ladder earlier in the series. With what you just said about the weight, could the ladder be transformed to resemble and attic ladder. I think you know what I am talking about. The ones at my Mom's hose fold into thirds and then a fairly powerful spring will pull it up into the attic with just a little bit of help. It still has a small rope pull that hangs down.
When the cabin heats up, does that help the snow to fall off?

Twenty years ago, I put down landscape material under three inches of pea gravel around six raised beds. About two months ago I had do some maintenance on one the beds, that landscape material was still good, and showed no signs of deterioration. It has been on the ground exposed to rain water for twenty years. In the dry, I cannot imagine that landscape material deteriorating.
In addition, I still have a partial roll of that landscape material I used that has been in my attic for twenty years. It gets pretty hot up there in the summer. That partial roll is still good and shows no signs of deterioration. Bear in mind that if a landscape material deteriorated, its purpose to allow water and air flow while blocking plant growth, would be void.

The wood in the walls has been dried pretty good in the air before I build with it

With all the sawdust you have I am surprised you haven’t make fire starters in cardboard egg cartons with a small bit of wax.

Great video ! Question, Why would you not use tar paper again ? Is there an asphalt oder still present ? I'm building a dovetail log cabin in VT this spring and was considering using tar paper behind boards on interior partition wals . Thanks , keep up the great content

I haven’t noticed any tar paper odor but others on the comments section mentioned that they wonder if it an alternative would be better. I don’t know for sure that I wouldn’t use tar paper again but I’d look around at alternatives just to see if there’s something else that could work even better

Someone mentioned there is black poly vapour barrier available which could save me a step so may have to look into that in the future

A 6' step ladder and a broom handle 😁 in my parents old house the pipe was 16', bottom half got the broom handle smack, top half dad welded an 8' piece of rebar to (what I'm guessing) was the wire bristle brush made to clean the pipe.
