- This is a talk done by noted freethinker and author Ravichandran C at District Panchayathu Hall, Palakkad, Kerala in connection with the Nurse's Day Celebration-2016 on 10.5.16 conducted by District Government Nursing College, Palakkad and the Health department, Kerala. Autism is a wide spectrum of developmental disorders caused by anomalies in the brain. Ravichandran refers the different facets of autism and its possible solutions as suggested by Dr Vilayannoor S Ramachandran in his book the Tell Tale brain(2010). The speaker himself translated this book into Malyalam as ' Masthishkom Kadha Parayunnu' (മസ്തിഷ്ക്കം കഥ പറയുന്നു) in March, 2016. Publisher-DC Books, Kottayam, Kerala, India.

Sir, a suggestion. I don't think "Powerpoint Presentation" is the right word to use in freethinker's presentations. Powerpoint is the name of a presentation software by microsoft. Just the word Slideshow Presentation would do. There are other presentation softwares like OpenOffice Impress or Libreoffice Impress. I think free software movement is a part of free thinking as well
PURPOSELESS ,BLIND RANDOM MUTATIONS & GENETIC PROGRAMS: We often hear whenever there is a deleterious (harmful) mutation in the evolutionary process, there is a ‘program’ or ‘mechanism’ to remove it. The question is ,if everything is formed by ,purposeless , random and blind forces of natural selection, who has made this correcting ‘program’ or ‘mechanism’ which literally brings order out of chaos ? .This question is also relevant to the evolution of English language from no words to 8 lakh words - language was not evolving on its own, but it was evolved and moulded by intelligent conscious human beings. ( Typing monkeys analogy & Evolution}:-It would be statistically impossible if every square foot of the earth's surface was covered with typing monkeys to randomly type even the first 100 characters in Shakespeare's "Hamlet” . If the monkeys typed only in lower case, including the 27 spaces in the first 100 characters, the chances are 27 raised to 100 (ie. one chance in 10 raised to 143). Or if each proton in the observable universe were a typing monkey (roughly 10 raised to 80 in all), and they typed 500 characters per minute (faster than the fastest secretary), around the clock for 20 billion years, then all the monkeys together could make 5x10 raised to 96 attempts at the characters. It would require an additional 3x10 raised to 46 such universes to have an even chance at success).

This ‘mechanism’ is no way different from Theist’s viewpoints that organisms are organized by purpose, order ,program & mind like principles. How come an evolutionary mechanism with RANDOMNESS as one of its principal dogmas, selects (without any consciousness!) and stick only with 4 nucleotides ATCG. (Adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine) for billions of years - which are present in all organisms including plants and animals. While permutations and differences exist between species, this basic structure has existed unchanged for billions of years.
Even the most ardent defenders of the materialistic theory smuggle purposive, organizing principles into living organisms in the form of selfish genes or genetic programs. In Dawkins’s words, ‘‘DNA moves in mysterious ways. The DNA molecules are not only intelligent; they are also selfish, ruthless and competitive, like successful Chicago gangsters’’. The selfish genes “create form,” “mould matter”. The dominant paradigm of modern biology, although materialistic, is remarkably similar to vitalism (theism), with ‘programs’ or ‘information’ or ‘instructions’ or ‘messages’, playing the role formerly attributed to souls. Computer programs are intelligently designed by human minds for particular purposes, and act upon through the electronic machinery of a computer. The computer is a machine, but the program is not.
Any way Dr. Vilayannur is humble enough to state ‘‘the question of how neurons encode meaning and evoke all the semantic associations of an object is the holy grail of neuroscience, whether you are studying memory, perception, art, or consciousness’’ But Mr.Ravichandran has already jumped in to the conclusion that everything regarding mind is what brain does. His statement about phantom limb that if consciousness is there, why the brain is being tricked can be compared to inducing hypnotic blisters by touching a man’s arm with a pencil by telling him that it is a lighted cigarette. Soon afterwards, the skin reddened and a blister appeared where the cool pencil had touched on the skin. This is the power of belief, which is mind over matter or placebo effects (some utilize it & others exploit it). To say that consciousness is an illusion does not explain consciousness: it presupposes it. Illusion is a mode of consciousness

About that bouba-kikki effect....I think most of the audience there used another logic to name those shapes....it was written 1st bouba & 2nd kikki in the tittle...the images, 1st one was sharp one & 2nd one was curvey one...so the audience assumed 1st one is bouba & 2nd one is kikki. If Prof. Ravichandran had shown only the images without the title & just ask them which one is kikki & which one is bouba, they might have answered sharp one as kikki & curvey one as bouba.

Dear Ravichandran Sir, what is the logical and rational plausibility of our assumption that physical objects which are made up of atoms (it is self-evident that atoms don't have any self-awareness!) , for example, a stone(or inorganic material) of certain mass(Kg), when subjected to evolutionary forces of magnitude of certain Newtons(N) for trillion, trillion, trillions of years or even infinite time , the stone will become 'self aware' in such a way that now the stone is able to 'think', 'aware', and 'reason' about even 'its' own existence and 'its' surroundings, able to grasp the laws of physics, mathematics, able to involve in logical reasoning, able to draw logical conclusions, etc.?

1. Fallacious Appeal to Authority.
Relying upon the view of apparent (as opposed to genuine) authorities to settle the truth of a statement or argument.
Richard Long, a respected retired New Zealand
newsreader featured in advertising campaigns for Hanover Finance. Long
had no financial expertise. Newsreaders look well informed, but they are
essentially presenters. They are well known because they’re on the
news: not because they know about investments. If we rely upon a
newsreader’s endorsement to settle which investment fund we should
trust, we would be accepting a claim without adequate evidence. That
would be a fallacious appeal to authority.
Appeals to authority also conflict with the basic tenet of good logical and critical thinking which calls upon us to take responsibility for evaluating the grounds for our beliefs. Adopting a belief merely because someone else simply told us it was true is a way of avoiding good logical and critical thinking.
Sometimes, however, good logical and critical
thinking will itself lead us to rely on genuine authorities. If I can’t
assess the investment option for myself, I might reason that I should
trust the advice of a genuine investment advisor. That’s not avoiding
logical and critical thinking: it’s reasoning about a matter related
indirectly to the question I’m trying to settle.
When I consider whether I should rely on a genuine authority, I should consider the following questions:
Is the authority a genuine authority: are they experts?
Are they giving advice in the areas within which they are a genuine authority? (We should listen to actors about acting; not so much about investing or medicine).
Is there a broad consensus among authorities in the area? If not, we should not decide to believe X solely because an authority says X is true, since other genuine authorities say that X isn’t true.
Is the authority speaking sincerely (they mightbe giving an endorsement because they’re paid to do so) and are they free of obvious bias?
Only if the answer to all four of these questions is “yes” should we accept a claim because an authority endorses it, and even then, we should only do so if we are not in a position to evaluate the evidence for the claim ourselves
2. The Ad Hominem or ‘At the Person’ Fallacy.
Rejecting someone’s argument by attacking the person rather than evaluating their argument on its merits.

MIND IS WHAT BRAIN DOES?
Attempts to explain a human brain which has 100 billion neurons and each neuron having 1,000 to 10,000 contacts with other neurons, in terms of different brain regions firing neurons (light-up) and electro-chemical activities using X-ray, MRI, EEG , CAT scans and galvanic skin response (GSR) test are like trying to understand a Computer by grinding it up and analyzing its component elements, such as copper, germanium and silicon. But in this process of reduction, the structure and the programmed activity of the computer vanishes, and chemical analysis will never reveal the circuit diagrams; no amount of mathematical modeling of interactions between its atomic constituents will reveal the computer’s programs or the purposes they fulfilled. Only excuse is the hypothesis that the emerging properties arising out of mixing various components give rise to new components or phenomenon like consciousness (sometimes life itself), i.e. billions of brain neurons whose interactive states exceeds the number of elementary particles in the known universe should randomly converge at a single place to evolve an organ or organs which are as complex as brain.(it need immense guts to say that human eye has 50 defects).
IS THE BRAIN REALLY NECESSARY?
Even hardcore Atheist like Francis Crick who shared in a Nobel Prize for the discovery of the structure of DNA, states this way, ‘‘Almost all the molecules in our bodies, with the exception of DNA, the genetic material, turn over (renew) in a matter of days, weeks, or at the most a few months. How then is memory stored in the brain so that its trace is relatively immune to molecular turnover?’---For decades, the most popular theory has been that memory must depend on changes in connections between nerve cells, the synapses. Yet attempts to locate memory stores have proved unsuccessful over and over again.
The British neurologist John Lorber found that some people with extreme hydrocephalus were surprisingly normal , which led him to ask the provocative question: ‘Is the brain really necessary?’ .He scanned the brains of more than six hundred people with hydrocephalus, and found that about sixty had more than 95 per cent of the cranial cavity filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Some were seriously retarded, but others were more or less normal, and some had IQs of well over 100. One young man who had an IQ of 126 and a first-class degree in mathematics, a student from Sheffield University, had ‘virtually no brain’. His skull was lined with a thin layer of brain cells about a millimeter thick, and the rest of the space was filled with fluid. Any attempt to explain his brain in terms of a standard ‘connectome’ would be doomed to failure. His mental activity and his memory were still able to function more or less normally even though he had a brain only five per cent of the normal size.
Erik Kandel, who won the Nobel Prize in 2000 for his work on memory in the sea slug, Aplysia, drew attention to some of these problems in his acceptance speech: ‘‘How do different regions of the hippocampus and the median temporal lobe . . . interact in the storage of explicit memory? We do not, for example, understand why the initial storage of memory requires the hippocampus, whereas the hippocampus is not required once a memory has been stored for weeks or months. We also know very little about the recall of explicit (declarative) memory . . . These systems properties of the brain will require more than the bottom-up approach of molecular biology’’.
Explaining a supercomputer just by studying its components:-TELL TALE BRAIN
Analogous to a computer with a TV tuner card, human brain has hardware and software part. The hardware part is different regions of brain.( occipital, temporal, parietal, and frontal lobes, amygdala, Brocas,Wernicke’s area - etc).
Comparing our brain to a computer, on the hardware part, the pictures on the computer screen depends on hundreds of electronic components of the set and the energy that powers it, and also on the invisible transmissions it receives through the electromagnetic field. A skeptic who rejected the idea of invisible influences might try to explain everything about the pictures and sounds in terms of the components of the set - the wires, transistors, and so on - and the electrical interactions between them. For example by a defect in some of the transistors, or loose contacts in electrical circuits - affect the pictures by changing their color or distorting their shapes; while mutations of components in the tuning circuit cause the set to jump from one channel to another, leading to a completely different set of sounds and pictures. Through careful research he would find that damaging or removing or cross-wiring some of these components affected the pictures or sounds the set produced, and did so in a repeatable, predictable way.(in human brain it is utilized for anesthesia & manifested in various strange forms like phantom limbs, synesthesia, agnosia, Capgras syndrome, alien-hand syndrome ,sleep, Apotemnophilia ,autism, telephone syndrome, Tran sexuality). This discovery would reinforce his materialist belief. But this does not prove that the evening news report is produced by chemical interactions among the TV set’s components. Can we say which website Mr.X browsed yesterday by looking at a damaged component? He would be unable to explain exactly how the set produced the pictures and sounds. The underlying premise of Dr. Vilayannur’s book pivots around this hardware part of brain. Dr. Vilayannur’s description of working of brain as orchestrated & compartmentalized interaction between different brain areas is only a hardware part. The brain areas of animals also light up (fire neurons) when they see, hear or having any emotions. The only specialty which makes human brain unique is its large size-proportionate to its body and the immense number of mirror neurons. Lighting up of different brain areas denotes only a drop in the ocean.
The software part is the underlying genetic program on which all the micro, macro and nano components of the body functions and comes into force whether you are studying memory, perception, art, or consciousness. Genetic programs are explicitly analogous to computer programs, which are intelligently designed by human minds to achieve particular purposes. Programs are purposive, intelligent and goal-directed. The ‘genetic program’ implies that plants and animals are organized by purposive principles that are mind-like, or designed by minds. Using the word ‘genetic program’ is another way of smuggling intelligent designs into chemical genes. Saying lesions in the left angular gyrus of brain eliminates abstract skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic is same as saying some fungus on a particular component caused the computer to crash, but do we know the machine language -software- which gave the left angular gyrus the ability to read & write ? .
Materialists have always accused vitalists or theists of trying to explain the mysteries of life in terms of empty words, such as ‘vital factors’ and ‘souls’ that ‘explain everything and therefore nothing’. But the vital factors in their Atheist guises have exactly this characteristic. How does a marigold grow from a seed? or How does a zygote grow into a trillion celled baby in 9 months? because it is genetically programmed to do so. How does a spider instinctively spin its web? Because of the information coded in its genes. How does weaver bird builds its nest? That is the default setting encoded as instruction and messages in the DNA and so on-------

Undoubtedly Dr. Vilayannur Ramachandran must get Nobel Prize for the discovery of ‘Mirror Box’ as 80% of the phantom pain patients would be getting relief and for saving them from suicide due to excruciating pain from phantom limbs. If every organ is represented in the BRAIN MAP and as long as amputated organs are not deleted from the brain Map, the problem of phantom pain exists for every organ. But a Pandora’s Box is waiting to be opened!!!. The so called tried and tested medical practices like the removal of uteruses, diabetes amputation, appendicitis operation, and organ transplanting will be debunked at one stroke. If rationalists are taking this up as a campaign they will be doing a great service to humanity (remember 100% of organ recipients have to live on Immunosuppressant drugs to avoid body rejecting the implanted organs)

VISION and BRAIN- Homunculus fallacy & infinite regress…
Dr. Vilayannur says ‘‘analogously, the brain creates symbolic descriptions. It does not re-create the original image, but represents the various features and aspects of the image in totally new terms-not with squiggles of ink, of course, but in its own alphabet of nerve impulses. These symbolic encodings are created partly in your retina itself but mostly in your brain.’’
OBJECTS ARE WHERE I SEE THEM, NOT IN MY HEAD/BRAIN.
Further to the above statement, most contemporary metaphors for the activity of the brain are derived from computers and internal representations in brain are commonly conceived of as ‘virtual reality’ displays. Following words are used to describe computer analogy of brain’s activity like:- Program, processing data & information,system,message, self consciousness like a software program, neural hardware, encoding, computation, stored memories, wiring, genetic codes, cross-wiring, circuits, instructions, blueprint, templates, default settings etc.
As per Dr. Vilayannur, Our visual perceptions are a ‘simulation’ (a form of virtual reality) of the real world that is ‘made by, and exists within, the brain’. The idea of visual experiences as simulations inside brain leads to strange consequences that are not explained by any scientists in the world so far. If my brain is analogous to a computer, when I look at the sky and stars, the sky I see is inside my skull (monitor). So my skull should be beyond the sky and stars !!!. But actually they(sky&stars) are where I see them , miles and miles away, not in my head-------
