Librarian here!!! Great tips on the library 😊 If the branch you go to doesn't have what you're seeking, ask if another one in the county has it or use the inter-library-loan system. This is when you get something from another library not in your area. This could be another county, a college, an archive, or even a different state- like borrowing from the New York Public Library when you are in another state. Disclaimer: it might take some time to get to you, so if you're not in a hurry, I would definitely use this perk! Having a library card will open the world to you 😊
Another librarian here! I'm in Pittsburgh, so we have an excellent system here. Not only do we offer everything you listed, but often we have no cost programs (movie nights, book clubs, lectures, game nights and more!) that are fun and engaging.
I do the cart trick as well! It gets the window-shopping addiction out of my system. Sometimes I have some stuff in it for MONTHS and then eventually I get bored of the item (like I would have if I had gotten it back then) and I remove it. This way I pretend I own it, and I get to get bored of it AND save money at the same time.
My life has changed drastically over the last year so I’ve decided to only buy things that I need or if I spend money it’s discounted or I have a coupon with cashback. With the fires in Cali, even though I’m on the east coast, I had the realization that a natural disaster can happen and we could lose everything and most of what I have wouldn’t be able to be replaced. But while I have the things I have I’ll use them and not rebuy right away because I probably have something similar. And I’m going to try to shop in store more because online shopping is too convenient and encourages overbuying as a way to pass the time as if it’s a hobby.
Okay I feel you so much on the wearing things backwards point tho!!! I have multiple sleeveless tops that I haven't felt quite comfortable wearing bc they are quite low-cut and are becoming looser with time, and since I don't wear a bra I feel a little odd about wearing them (don't want my boobs to fall out every time i slightly incline my torso). However last summer i had the brilliant idea to just wear them backwards, and it worked well with most of them, so now I have a bunch of "new" tops with quite a high neck and a really nice low-cut back
And when I was on a trip in 2023, and wanted to buy something in a hotel gift shop, I talked myself out of it by reminding myself that I wanted to donate to local nonprofits after I went home.
I appreciate videos like this because I am trying a no buy in 2025 regarding makeup. I'm trying to be more responsible inasmuch as I have enough blush and foundation to last several years. I'll never see the pan on my blushes. Unfortunately, one trigger is watching my favorite content creators on UA-cam. I hope this doesn't mean abandoning UA-cam, because I enjoy the old style GRWM. I still learn a lot watching. Good tip about finding a no buy group.
I am being laid off this month and I have decided to do a no-buy for all non-essentials. I have plenty of clothes/shoes/beauty products. I’m actually excited to use the products I already have! I have always been the queen of filling my cart online and then not buying. 😂 I get the thrill of “shopping”, but don’t have to spend money. I’m going to make a wishlist of beauty items I want to buy this year and if I still want them by Black Friday, I may buy them once they are on sale. I also LOVE the library! I never buy books anymore! I also love visiting little libraries around me and then returning the books when I’m finished.
I 10000% am with you on not decluttering, but maybe from a somewhat different standpoint? Personal preferences and trends are constantly shifting. If something doesn’t expire and you have the room for it, it can be really nice to keep it and be able to shop your stash or shop your wardrobe later. I’ve found things in my closet from ages ago that I seriously wanted to declutter, but are actually my style now, and it has been so awesome to not have to go out and buy them. I also think we get used to having a certain amount of stuff around and can get anxious about the perceived lack of options and feel more compelled to shop when we declutter. Backups are a trap, but using what you already have is the most budget and eco-friendly thing to do, so it isn’t a bad idea to keep some things around if you already have them.
What a lightbulb moment "don't declutter first"! 2025 is a no buy for clothes, skincare, and makeup. But I see now why I should declutter at the end of 2025 and not the beginning! THANK YOU!!! 💝
I agree! I always feel proud when I declutter, but when I reorganize and just look through what I have, I’m like - wow, I haven’t even used xyz… 🤦♀️ Ironically, I was tossing expired/dried up stuff last night & had a stash to give away… maybe I put it away and just think one more time about them.
Another suggestion similar to buy nothing groups- lots of queer communities host swap events that are so great for trans people. I'm going to one soon and I have a small pile of femme clothes and a few bits of makeup to give to trans women. If you're not sure where to find these events, check in with your local lgbtq+ charities.
I looove my Buy Nothing group. Ive gotten a good amount of really great stuff from there, most recently a couple new dresses for work events and now i don't have to buy them myself! Ive also gotten a leather jacket from there, random things like a basket to keep my yoga stuff, a rolling pin, never worn sneakers, as well as some short term needs that I used for the short time I needed it and then passed along like a wax warmer for when I made wax melts at a class but never actually buy wax melts myself. Also my mom worked at the library for 23 years so we were such a library family! Such a great resource, even if you never actually go in, just having access to Libby and the online resources is definitely worth having a library card!
Thank you so much for this video, Kelly! Your tip about putting something in an online cart, but not actually buying, works for me. Also the "wait" tip! And thank you for recommending public libraries as a resource!
I love the tip on filling and abandoning carts -- it's what I do all the time too, and the other side bonus (but again requires having will power to not just use it an excuse to fall back into the temptations of overspending/overconsumption) is that a lot of websites will then see that you've abandoned your cart and then offer you an extra discount to come back and actually purchase them. I like to add things to cart and let them sit for at least a week or two to see if I'm still interested in buying them or not, and to see if some sort of abandoned cart offer will come through -- if I've forgotten about my cart / the products then it's a sign to me it was probably an impulse almost-buy, but if I've still been thinking about them the whole time then that's usually a sign that I can give myself permission to commit to the purchase
I literally have a full Sephora cart now that I am waiting on until the VIB sale in April. And I’m constantly taking things in and out of the cart as time passes
I love to sew, and my machine needs to go to the shop for a refresh. I found out that our library has a very nice sewing machine that can be checked out!! As for makeup, I am so happy to say that I have finally come to the place where I do not buy anything new unless I need to replace something. For "wants," they go on my wish list, and I will get them as gifts throughout the year! I also will put some items in the "save for later" list, and will wait until I have rewards points or get a gift card. I have $20 in Kohl's cash from buying gifts for my grandchildren, and I might use this, unless I need to buy a birthday gift!
Kelly I think you're SO analytical and nuanced, and I see it more all the time. I'm an engineer and I REALLY vibe with your approach to things. During the intro to this video I was thinking to myself "maybe I don't need to declutter now, and the main goal just has to be spending less," but then you immediately told me several completely different, super compelling reasons to at least postpone some decluttering. I feel like I just went to a class with a tenured professor---a good one.
Excellent video! So many good tips thank you. I'm fair in the winter and medium in the summer, so I divide my make up into 2 collections. Right now my summer set is boxed up in my closet. It's so fun to get everything back out when the seasons change. Last summer I had purchased the catrice rose corrector for under eye circles. It was way too emolient for my oily skin then. I put it in my winter collection box and pulled it out recently. I still didn't like how it looked on me with makeup and was trying to figure out a way to use it without declutering. Now I'm using it as an eye cream instead to provide moisture when I am not wearing makeup. I don't plan to repurchase but I'm really happy to get use out of it, not have to declutter it, and not waste my money.
One tip that I tried and worked for me earlier was to take pictures of my makeup collection in my phone. I created a makeup folder and within that I had one for eyeshadows, for example. I opened every palette I owned and clicked a picture of it. Now next time when I was lying in bed watching Instagram or UA-cam and felt attracted to an eyeshadow I saw someone use, I went into my photo folder to see if I already have a similar shade. Sure enough , literally similar shade was already there and I didn’t even remember. Same with blush. This works very well and stops impulsive buys thinking if I buy this last item it will complete my collection . No item is ever a last item and there’s no such thing as completing a collection.
I love thrive market! I would use your link but I already have a membership. Oh and that breakfast blend coffee is my fave. Maybe I'm biased because it's sourced from Peru, where I'm from! 😍
Another benefit of not decluttering - Instead I keep the makeup I think I won’t use in a separate simple makeup bag. Invariably something I didn’t like 6 months or 12 months ago, I feel attracted to try again when I see someone on the internet using it maybe. I can go back into my stash and pick something which now feels like new.
Yes! I didn’t declutter but I did just go through my stash to take stock of what I have and to organize. That alone helped me to not want to buy as much. I had forgotten about stuff.
Yay the library is so great!!! They provide so many services. Also they always post community events that are often free or very cheap if you need something to do other than shop.
I've found that if I hold on to some beauty or skincare item that I don't really want to use anymore, I will eventually find a use for it down the road. When I think I want something, I think about if I actually need it, & then I walk away from it. Most of the time, I don't go back to it. If I go back to it 3-4 times, then I'll get it - because clearly,, it's something I actually want & not an impulse buy. Oh, & for things outside of beauty & bath items, buy used if at all possible. Instead of getting a new cast iron skillet, go to antique shops or flea markets & get an old one instead. Yeah, you might have to clean it up, but you might get one of better quality as well. I buy used books all the time, instead of buying them new.
i cannot do a no-buy year, but i have been on a low-buy for all my life, since i have so many expenses... i am also a vegetarian and food and coffee doubled its cost in the past 2 years, also I have 3 sick pets that require special veterinary care which is quite expensive... so with what I have left I like to buy a book, a concert, theatre, cinema ticket and some makeup stuff :)
The shopping cart trick doesn't work for me (too close to the buying stage for my brain) but what I do instead is have a folder in my browser labelled 'No Need to Buy' where I save things that have caught my eye. Often I park things in that folder and often the interest dissipates. I think some of my buying behaviour comes from being aware of an interesting product and buying it so I don't forget about it, when bookmarking it satiates the same part of my brain (I've still kept it on my radar) and lets things cool off until the wiser part of my brain prevails (and I don't buy).
Low buy here, 3 years maybe. I guess it's becoming a life style for me too. My interest in makeup has dropped a bit , but it still is there. My kryptonite is eyeshadow. I have to sit each one out. Give it some time. Usually my interest changes.
Honestly, I had to undertake a digital minimalism journey to stop my Frequent scroll shopping online. Just stay away from the phone… Easier said than done. And I know some people still shopping in person. Anyways, if that’s your digital minimalism is very rewarding in other parts of your life too.

librarians are the besttttt!! my husband is an adult/teen librarian in LA County
Ok BUT YOUR HAIR?? 😍 I need a tutorial ❤
I second this!! So curious about this gorgeous style Kelly's rocking and whether or not shes had any colour done because she's absolutely ethereal 🤭😍

I also find this to be the case with shopping on line - it's hard for me to not overbuy.
I have a low buy buddy…so we can keep each other accountable! And talk each other out of buying redundant stuff
my friend and i do this and call it “the voice of reason”
I need someone like this in my life 😫
Okay I feel you so much on the wearing things backwards point tho!!! Yes!! Now you have double the options!
@@KellyGooch Another tip is that cardigans can be buttoned up and worn as tops by themselves. It expands your wardrobe!
Something that helps me is planning Something to look forward to so everytime I think of buying I remember my planned trip ❤

@@adelam.6123 I agree 💯
