Saw them in Darwin in the early 90's at Darwin High school, some festival, also Regurgitator played. TISM did a mad conga through the crowd and I got knocked over by them. Proud to be an Aussie that day.
Not unique for TISM, controversy surrounded the release of this track. The main lyric I'm on the drug that killed River Phoenix enraged a number of people, with Red Hot Chili Peppers Australian-born bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary (a close friend of Phoenix) reportedly left "wanting to kill" TISM. TISM addressed this controversy in 2004: "By the same token, Hitler-Barassi says, "I'm on the drug that killed River Phoenix", the line that famously enraged Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, "wasn't about River Phoenix at all. That song was about fame, and the people listed in it weren't even real celebrities." But did he get the opportunity to explain that to Flea? "I had him on the ground and I was just about to break his nose with my forehead and I said, 'You do know, Flea, that satire is a legitimate art form stretching back to ancient Greek drama?' And he said, 'Oh, that's OK then, Ron'. He's a good guy, Flea. He's a mate of ours," he adds unconvincingly.
The old needle dance I remember I was like 7 my mum yelling to stop dancing like tism infront of my teachers at school singing what are ya 😹😹 thanks mum.
i vaguely remember some american rapper being interviewed on australian radio, talking about the controversy surrounding some of his lyrics. the hosts then played him this song in full as an example of how we do things in oz. he sounded pretty shaky for the rest of the interview.
It was actually this song that got TISM blacklisted from Big Day Out one year after Anthony Kaleides from The Chilli Peppers heard it and told BDO that they either blacklist TISM or the Chillis would pull out of the tour. Apparently Kaleides was a frind of River Phoenix or something like that. That said, Fleas an Aussie, so he probably thought it was fucking hilarious, being somewhat more used to australian humor.
I've always thought that TISM just wouldn't translate to an international audience lol! They're so bloody Aussie. Nothing is sacred, nothing off limits , but no insult intended, just speaking honestly 😆 Just putting it all out there. Predicted Jackos demise by a decade at least! 😳
I was at this gig, and about twenty others. TISM gigs were always huge fun. They regularly went into the crowd and had their masks and costumes torn off. After a few trips into the crowd they sometimes performed wearing nothing but a mask. You'd regularly see people leaving a gig wearing a mask they souvenired. Oh, and the camera you see Ron carrying into the crowd at 2:40 was taken off him and torn to pieces.
Looks like more than 20 in that crowd. Saw them many times over the years but the standout was their last show at earthcore in 2004 I think it was. Wild stuff, maybe it was the acid but they really let fucking loose. Miss these ratbags.
@@Hajenko I read the 20 thing the same way too 😂...then I read your comment ...🙌🏻 It's the little things that make life worth it! 👊🏻 And yeah it was 2004. There's a couple of minutes at the end of this video ua-cam.com/video/rWABslqDOC4/v-deo.html
tism know their funny... back then this song actually helped me accept what happened to river, by laughing about it! musically, they nailed the rave style... they could do any genre you could throw at them! bring back tism now, we need them!
@FrankCleocuz I believe the story/myth goes that he asked TISM to remove the song since River was a mate and so TISM agreed to do so if the Chilli Peppers beat them in a fist fight, it never went further.
This was an excellent gig. There was a production of "Othello" going on the stage above. I was asked in a vox pop for my feedback. I talked about the Shakespeare.
I saw this fucking astounding band at my local back in the mid 90's, they were all dressed in tight white KKK outfits. At the left of the stage an artist took to sheets of corrugated steel with an angle grinder and hammers. TISM have a MASSIVE sound!. Oh!, Flea took TISM to task over their song "You'll Never Be An Old Man River", a song about the death of River Pheonix. Flea simply showed up that he is part of what the Sex Pistols once called the "Conservative Rock Establishment".
Too bloody right! I just thought everyone had live music like we had in Melbourne in the 80's & 90's. They didn't. You could easily see 3 or 4 of the best pub bands ever on a good Saturday night. Then early this century we found out that this was an incredible time, unequalled anywhere! One Sat. Night we saw Uncanny Men, Painters & Dockers, and then Prince (yes, the purple one), playing an aprés gig at the place across the road from Luna Park. No hits, just 2 hours of the best improvising & guitar playing I've ever heard. We were so lucky!
I was introduced to this band thru a top weirdest bands video and usually weird can be synonymous with off putting or generally bad but me being very into punk and not knowing alot about Australian music I had to give it a go and bro this shit fucks 🤟
I had Humphrey B Flogart or however he spells his name butt naked except for a ski mask leap onto my shoulders and request I catapault him on to stage. Good times.
At a Big Day Out, they dressed as giant, inflated condoms for the entire set and did a bluegrass version of 'Defecate On My Face' , which was the song that broke them out as a JJJ song of the year.
the line about Michael Jackson suddenly has a whole new meaning XD I still remember watching TISM at an O week gig at a university. I was seeing double for some reason, and everyone was wearing only balaclavas and socks on their cocks. I was confused about exactly how many semi-naked men were dancing on stage XD
I used to think it was "drink the slab, drink the slab, drink the slab the pope got drunk- thanks Scotty T for setting me straight???!!! Straight?? Twisted!!
Lets face it... TISM would own the Eurovision song contest if we ever put them up as our entrant.
I never thought about them like that, but I agree 100%
They would have wiped the floor in Eurovision.
Fucking love how that guitar cuts through the song like a knife through hot techno
Like butter drippin off a hot biscuit
