- "Greg! The Stop Sign" is TISM's parody of the infamous TAC public service advertisement in which in the original advert, moments before the car accident, the female passenger yells out "Darren!". No idea why it was changed to Greg, but then again Greg rears it's fugly head again when almost 15 years later Humphrey B. Flaubert (Damian Cowell) in his new band, ROOT! writes his ode to lead singer of The Beasts of Bourbon/Cruel Sea fame, called "I Wish I Was Tex Perkins". This song as the memorable lyrics of "A thousand girls call him in the night....nobody ever calls him Greg".
Did you ever wondered where that mid break instrumental piece came from?
Well it the band cover of The Shadows instrumental hit single "FBI" from 1961.

"Greg! The Stop Sign" peaked at #10 in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 1995 and it was the second single from the album 'Machiavelli and the Four Seasons', which was TISM's highest charting album. There was a hidden agenda in the music video, as it was supporting the "Save the St Kilda Club" movement. The music video was directed by Mark Hartley.

You gotta love how TISM was able to take a TAC public service ad campaign, and turn it into a song about fatalism.
I wish I had been old enough to understand that nuance at the time the song came out.

It's called life. You and I weren't old enough to get it then. We are *really* starting to appreciate the finer points now... and *that's* why they were brilliant. They managed to capture something absolutely universal and it endures - I'm loving it, gleaning more and more each time I revisit it.
I'd give my right testicle to see them do a reunion show. (No mean feat, considering I wasn't actually born with any.. )

As far as I know it was about my now brother in-law, it was not a stop sign it was a major car accident on what was then the South Eastern Freeway just near Punt Rd, going to the AFL/VFL Grand Final where he was working along with a band member. It was around 1990. They changed it for legal reasons but left the correct name, he survived and all is well, now married with 2 gorgeous children.
Grease Monkey Darren Millane. he "couldn't get past the semi". And if you met/knew any these guys in late 80s/early 90's all stuff about Prosecting QC doing blow in 1 of them. Another is a doctor. Is why they wore masks; public careers

I was very disappointed to learn that the TAC ad which inspired this song did not in fact include the phrase "Greg! The stop sign!!". It was actually the infamous "Darren!" ad. Apparently TISM thought that 'Greg' sounded better when sung Beach Boys-style.

When I was a boy I got a summer holiday job through the student employment service at Monash working night shifts at this filthy factory in Cochranes Road. I have to be PC I know, but on night shift everyone was from North England or Scotland but me. I spent three months passing bricks up a kiln flue and they trusted me to make up batches of stuff while everyone else fart d around. The cunning buggers tried every phone in this factory until they found a phone that wasn't locked . . . and could ring England.
All these likely lads were just so funny. We used to race forklifts . . . I crashed mine. Anyway, they other advice was not to go to the South Side Six in South Road coz even the old bastards wanted to fight. One day I'll recall the night I met Robbie Muir....
Ah St.Kilda at Moorabbin. Not as rough as Windy Hill but you used to stand in the outer with bloke in boiler suits straight from Saturday overtime. They brought huge Eskies with Melbourne Bitter 740ml steel cans and makeshift BBQ. The other thing I remember was inches of liquid wee everywhere coz the toilets where always rooted and the ground and car park just mud. Two champions and sixteen hacks. If you barrack for,the Sainters you must love Richmond because they are the only crapper team than the Saints. Morsi Bromberg, judge, Ajax and St.Kilda player and like anybody famous from Monash, an honorary member of TISM, the greatest south east Melbourne band we never knew, with apologies to,Jet, who,we did know.
TISM, so suburban that they had the Melways map with Huntingdale Road on the Album cover, which was great to,look at if you were lost in Clayton while driving your parent's car to,the Ming Wing or the Rotunda.
This video takes me back to the mid to late nineties and those house parties in Fitzroy and North Melbourne in terrace houses. Every damn house had the hallway that went from the street to the concreted backyard with bedrooms off it.

Greg, the stop sign is about much more than the TAC ad, It's about not doing things that you know are wrong, not doing those stupid things your friends will cheer at but can ruin your life. And yeah, I met them too.

I think this is kind of cool and funny now, but when I was 15 (when this came out) I thought it was seriously lame. I guess I suspected that they were trying to sell some kind of message, and I wasn't buying.
