    H/H match update and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    This is now week 209 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on July 24, 1977, and originally aired in late August and early September of 1977.
    Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and joining them this week:
    ~~~After 2 weeks off (but it seems longer, since her entire prior week of 1026-1030 is unavailable for viewing), semi-regular Fannie Flagg returns for her 64th week of 90.
    ~~~Dick Martin rejoins the festivities for his 9th week (of 22 total). Dick just visited in episodes 1006-1010, and she has yet to be chosen for a head-to-head match question.
    ~~~Last but not least, Conny Van Dyke is here for her second and final week. Conny wasn't chosen for a H/H during her debut week, way back in 1975 (episodes 501-505). (I wonder if she's been gone long enough that Gene will try to sneak another "new kid on the block" kiss out of her?)
    Last week, King Richard answered four out of five H/H questions (Brett got the remaining one). Reviewing the past 63 weeks, Richard has played 267 times. Everyone else combined played 47 times. (Charles had 16 opportunities, Brett 12, Fannie 9, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, and Trish Stewart 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an astounding *85.0%* of all the H/H questions over these past 63 weeks.
    What's in store for this week? Plenty more Richard, I imagine. I'm hoping to see at least one other face sweating it out on the H/H hot seat sometime this week, but that often doesn't happen.
    Commentary: I frequently ask: Why is Richard the overwhelming choice in the H/H? Yes, clearly Richard is good at matching, but not significantly better than Brett (she actually leads him in accuracy 42.9% to 41.9%), and Richard lags well behind Charles, Betty, and Fannie when it comes to his track record of actually matching contestants for the big money. When Richard recently had a rough patch (he'd matched 6 out of his 22 most recent questions), no one commented. Then he got one right and people were describing him as phenomenal at the H/H and saying he must have ESP. But every time Brett misses a question, there are multiple comments about how "stupid" the contestant was for choosing her instead of Richard and how Brett "never" matches - even though Brett has actually matched a higher percentage of her questions than Richard has! At any rate, I find it fascinating reading those comments and watching a seemingly endless string of contestants choose the celebrity with the worst track record to try and win the big money. (Again, this is not to say that Richard is not good, he is! It's just that his colleagues have performed better at actually matching in the head-to-head, but yet he still gets all the credit.)
    ~~~Today's action:
    Our champion wins her second game, thanks to Fannie's "Dandruff"!
    *Today's audience match question: "________Cooper"*
    (My thoughts: DB, Gary, Jackie)
    The celebs: Richard (Alice), Fannie (Gary), Brett (Jackie)
    The choice: Alice
    The answers: Jackie, Alice, Gary (The celebs got them all again today!)
    Yesterday, Richard scolded the contestant because she didn't take his answer and scored $250 instead of $500. Today she does take his answer and scores $250 instead of $500. What does he say today? Not a syllable.
    Still, it's a foregone conclusion that she'll choose him again for the H/H... (They did match last time, after all.)
    Stats: Richard has matched 89 of his 208 most recent attempts (42.8%), 72 of his last 165 attempts (43.6%), 28 of his last 68 attempts (41.2%), and 9 of his last 25 attempts (36.0%). His overall success rate is *41.9%* and this is his 686th attempt so far.
    For the sake of comparison: Fannie has matched 14 of her 29 attempts (48.3%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 287 of his 685 attempts (41.9%). Dick Martin and Conny Van Dyke haven't answered any H/H questions yet.
    *Today's H/H question: "________Pizza"*
    (Oh dear. Frozen pizza? Yuck, I know, but I'm trying to think from a 1977 POV. Pepperoni? Cheese? A slice of? I think I'll just go with frozen pizza.)
    The champion seems about as puzzled as I am. Even Richard is having trouble deciding. Richard writes an answer, looks at Fannie for a moment as he debates, then files his card. He doesn't look confident today. I'm not sure there is a definitive answer this time. We'll see...
    The champion says "Italian pizza." I thought of that, even though I didn't write it down earlier. I don't think many would say that today, but back then pizza was a little more exotic, so maybe her answer might be the one. The audience is sure groaning though. Gene queries the audience, and they shout my second answer: Pepperoni. Yeah, in hindsight, that was probably better than my first choice.
    Oh, too funny! Richard wrote "Frozen"! (Have I watched him play too many times? Am I forever doomed to think like Richard Dawson when it comes to filling in the blanks? Am I going to start kissing every female I see?)
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~Well, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts).
    Charles - 47.8% (33 wins in 69 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 42.9% (30 wins in 70 attempts).
    Richard - 41.8% (287 wins in 686 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1041, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
    NOOO. The answer to the magician is he can pull his "hair" out of his hat. The pun being usually you pull a rabbit or "hare" out of your hat. So his hair gets caught in the hat and he pulls the hair, not hare, out of the hat!
      There were more than a few uggos, but the difference is that back then, just about everybody cared about good grooming: combed, styled hair; becoming, coordinated clothing of the right size with no holes; our hair, ourselves, and our clothes all clean. We tried to look at least good, if not always our best, out of respect for ourselves and for all the others who had to look at us. It's amazing how much more attractive anyone is if they're well turned out. To us, it was just part of being civilized, something we didn't expect would change.
    Last episode, Carmen chose a non-Richard answer to the audience match, matched the $250 response, and Richard shamed her for not picking his $500 suggestion. This time she goes with Richard, but it's still the $250 response. Does Richard apologize or acknowledge that Fanny's answer was superior? Noooo, of course not. Just stuck his bottom lip out. I'm glad Gene polled the audience, proving once again that the difference in the ranking of the audience match answers varies with the audience.
      @@pencils812 I've seen this happen many, many times, and finally decided to comment on it.
      The only explanation I can think of for such behavior is that Dawson's ego was so big (or so fragile), he used any excuse that made him look good (he thought) to get camera time. I can't imagine how he excused in his own mind being so condescending as to chastise adults on national television, especially for something that wasn't any of his business, but it's the one-sidedness of his behavior that upsets me the most. A couple times he said to a contestant who chose his answer and got $250 or $100, "I really thought it would be higher," but even that almost never happened.
