That's because they use scent not sight to identify foe and allies.

Welcome to another episode of "Why am I watching this, and can I even watch this?"
If we are being honest, they didn't just stumble on this with their multitudes of camera ready. Someone didn't call up the Smithsonian and say, "I think these two hornet colonies are gonna fight. You should get out here asap!". They moved one of the colonies next to another to instigate a fight so that they could film it. Whenever you see videos like this of animals fighting (particularly rarer fights, not deer sparring etc), 90% of the time, it was setup.
I don't think they stumbled upon this, but I think they were already filming these two colonies beforehand since apparently they knew these colonies well enough to give them names

The majority of bees / hornets / wasps are barren females. The only fertile one is the queen. Males only appear late in the season about the same time that a new generation of queens is raised, and those mated queens are the ones that find a spot to ride out the winter before starting a new hive in the spring.

I remember reading about endangered gorilla tribes despite having low numbers still brutally engaging each other in war over land, feeding grounds and habbitat.
