Natural World: Buddha Bees and The Giant Hornet Queen
It's springtime on Honshu Island, and a queen stirs from hibernation. She alone has the ability to create an empire of winged killers, one that will last all summer long. She is a Japanese giant hornet: the largest wasp on the planet. Armed with razor-sharp jaws, thick armour plating, and a lethal half-inch stinger, these hornets have but one mission: to spread their majesty's reign to the whole countryside. Is there nothing that can stop this murderous horde? Or will the giant monsters destroy all who stand in their way, man and insect alike?
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

@Romron Gramsay Yeah the Giant Asian Hornet and Asian Hornet are different species.
When the giant hornets will even attack other hornets, they're fearless
I see you yet again
They are just like humans *careless and love to be fearless*
Almost a little _too_ careless. The video itself states the Giant Hornets won at a terrible price. If they encounter yet another rival hornet nest, they may not have enough numbers to win again.
They’re only fearless because they are literally superior versions of the smaller hornets. They should pick on someone their own size

This wasn't so much as a massacre as it was a raid. After all, they LOST the first time, and it's not like all the yellow hornets died the second time.
... just an entire generation of their baby siblings...
True. Plus the Giant Hornets suffered huge losses on their number, so saying that they _massacred the Yellow Hornets_ is a lot of exaggeration.
They came back because there were survivors. They hate everything living.
I think that is no exaggeration. The next generation of the giants will hatch as normal, even stronger from bountiful food. The yellow hornets have lost a generation, and will take 2 generations to stabilise if at all. After all, you need adults to protect the larvae, but if the next generation of adults do not exist in meaningful numbers, they will be highly vulnerable for many seasons
@@charlesc.9012 Food is a secondary consideration to these creatures. Even when their hunger for food is satiated, there still remains the driving need to kill, to satisfy their hate. Except their hate is never satisfied.

It’s interesting to see an insect battle in two parts where one side wins first and the other side wins second.
Curious that the bees can't do this, a single sting to the back of the neck seems a lot easier than roasting the giants alive.
Maybe their stingers are too short or they're a last resort sort of defense. I like their snuggle roast strategy more lol
There also a knowledge component. They might not know that trick in the same way that bees outside of the Japanese honey bees dont seemto know the roasting trick
bee stingers don't get stuck in exoskeletons, so I've read, so it's a good question.
It's probably a strength thing. Yellow hornets are pretty strong, and all hornets are predators. Bees aren't predators so maybe they are weaker.
They use the roasting technique on the hornet scouts. If the scouts report the location, too many hornets come to effectively roast.
They do sting, but also die once they have stung. And only Japanese bees roast hornets, European bees adopt other strategies.
@@pikachufan102 the whole roasting the hornet alive strategy is certainly cooler, but it really only works on a single hornet. If reinforcements arrive they're doomed. If they could take the hornets out with a sting to the back of the neck, they could defend themselves against multiple giant hornets.
This added sound effects and the background music is just.. so right.

0:18 Literally sounds like a plane taking off.
Well basically.
Planes use tilted blades to cut the air the tilt pushes the air creating thrust. A bugs wing does the same thing.
Only difference is bugs have flexible muscles MUCH lighter frames that need less thrust to get airbourne.
So yes its the same physics either way
