I agree with the finishing statement that you made Film Riot. Our school held a contest, I spend 4 months on the pre production planning, and I had a friend who did the story. Since our school is generious and let us use the F55 we have, I got to use the amazing camera. But we lost the contest to a man who used a POINT AND SHOOT camera!! All because of the story. He won first place.. Needless to say, next film, I won't be using the F55. It was too distracting.
Whats with the Triune Films intro?? Is that going to be at the beginning of film riot from now on?

Maybe film riot just didn't like having the revision3 logo everywhere in their videos, and made some kind of deal where they don't have to include the logo anymore.

The AVCHD/Ninja blowup looks a little fishy to me.
Are you sure you're interpreting the footage correctly (not as upper field first?)
It looks like the vertical resolution has been halved by it being deinterlaced incorrectly - whereas the Ninja is interpreting it properly.
I won't make a difference to the compression artifacts, but it doesn't look like it should be that soft from the AVCHD.

I use a Canon Vixia HF G40 for all my videography. It never occurred to me to use a DSLR, mirrorless Canon or even a cell phone camera to record video.
Now the HF G40 isn't a C100 but I like how the videos render on a dedicated video camera than anything else.
The C100 AVCHD creates a light compression noise aka the boil you are seeing in the images. To greatly reduce this I recommend auto black balancing and using a NR rating of 3, these are especially useful in quick turn arounds. Also Clog should be exposed a little higher than recommended in Canon's white papers.

I was thinking of getting the C100 and now I want it more than ever. But I still have a lot of more buy (good tripod, camera stabilizer, thunderbolt hub) before I can purchase.

Nice comparisons, though you didn't comment on the shape distortions going from a full 35mm sensor to a crop sensor. BTW, you might want to consider filming these episodes with a longer lens.
What do you think about mounting a a Sony AS200v to the handle shoe of C100 for slow motion vs buying a mark ii?
if you pair the c100 with a ninja does it get rid of the blockiness from heavy color grading?

I know this video is super old but I think your in camera C100 footage is flagged as interlaced and that's why in the Ninja comparison it looks so much worse and has that jumpy thing going on.
thoughts on buying a used 5d mark ii (which you can find nowadays for around 700-800 euros? as an upgrade to a canon 600d (t3i) instead of a 5d mark iii which goes triple as that if you would buy it new

JackBrianDixon Your comment is hard for me to reply to.. so I'm going to start with this. They're still doing sketches. Their show has always been the same with a reasonable balance of comedy and lessons that the average student/subscriber appreciates. They're not changing anything but their equipment. Ryan is not changing the show or his equipment because he has to, he's ADAPTING to the new "toys" so they can make better and even much funnier videos.
P.S. If you're going to make a point or any sort of request to them, I suggest making full sentences with actual punctuations.
JackBrianDixon I agree that they are doing shorter sketches, but that's about all that's changed that I really care about. Theramseybros was kind of right, though.

What I find fascinating about FR is not so much the subject matter of the individual episode, but rather the unspoken or mentioned-as-an-aside comments. Case in point is your decision to use your branding. It made me consider why you had waited so long, how you developed over the years, what other activities you all had been involved with, etc. That thought process was as much an education as the episode was.

Something's is definitely wrong with the AVCHD vs. ProRes footage shown here. It's better but It's not that bad internally. I tried both. In the AVCHD it looks like the resolution is almost reduced by half, and de-interlacing artefacts all over the place, whilst on the Ninja you seem to have interpreted the footage correctly.
Look into this please.

Yeah, it is still a good camera
I shoot on my 60D which I love but I'm going to start doing a bit of experimentation with a 3 camera set up for a project with some friends. Unfortunately this meant digging around in the parents house for old digital cameras so I was able to add a 720p Olympia and a 480p canon powershot to the mix. Footage blends like gravel. Needless to say, I'm jealous!

I would love you see your review on Panasonic GH3 or GH4. Everyone raved about its HD video ability as cleaner than Canon 5D MK2 or 3.
Why not just get Magic Lantern? I think your 5DMKII would be able to record in RAW at 1080p. It'll add thousands of dollars of functionality for free. Even my T3i got a huge upgrade from Magic Lantern since I can now increase my bit rate to the max.
Do you use Magic lantern on 5D? Or to be more precise you are filming RAW video or H264?

Now that the 5d is your B camera, are you going to use Magic Lantern with it? Would be a cool camparison test to see the C100 to the Ninja vs the 5d to the Ninja. Nice video!

Great job Ryan. Quick question about the c100. When it comes to frame rates, what does PF30 and PF24 mean? I know what 24p is, but not PF. Thanks for the review!!!
PF24 means that you have 24fps but in a 60i container. Which is usefull if you put your endproduct on something like a DvD, that encodes in 60frames per second. But for normal shooting i would recomend using 24p.

What exactly do you do when you say "Sharpen your DSLR footage..." is that done in post or in camera. If in post what software, settings ...please explain, my brain is about to explode!!! Thank you very much.
It's done in post. If you have After Effects or Premiere Pro, try playing around with the "Unsharp Mask" effect. Good luck!

could you compare an alexa with an iphone 5?
rc-wingman I feel the Alexa will win in some areas and the iPhone in others. The Alexa will have a much superior IQ, however I feel that it will fall short on call quality, though your service provider clearly makes a difference. Maybe the Alexa sounds better on Verizon.

Is it UA-cam or your export codec that makes the C100 footage look so aliased near the edges? It was quite bad sometimes
I think they made a mistake with the footage.
The internal codec can be flagged as interlaced (Upper Field First) when it's actually progressive. So if you bring it into your editing programme, and leave it at that, then it halves the vertical resolution.
You should interpret it as progressive, at least for 25PF - haven't tried the other formats, but I guess 30PF is the same.
