    Thanks for the comparison Ryan!
    I rented the c100 and ninja blade for a kingdom hearts fan film a couple weeks ago and it was great.
    It was all night exteriors and we shot at 16,000 ISO.
    My only gripe with the ninja is that it is too easy to toggle the frame rates. I accidentally went to 29.97 for a couple shots and they were ruined so I had to use the backup avchd.

    Hey Ryan, I purchased a Panasonic AF100 2 years ago and while it's a great (practical) camera, it doesn't quite get the image quality I want. This is mostly because of the AVCHD. I was trying to decide if I should just buy a GH4, but I really love the built in ND filters, full camera body, XLR jacks, etc. Do you think I should get a new camera or purchase the Ninja Blade instead? Great video as always and thanks to anyone that gives any suggestions. :)

    • @jeanbout7868
      @jeanbout7868 10 років тому

      Get the gh4 for now ;)

    • @jaydizzlesquizzle
      @jaydizzlesquizzle 10 років тому +1

      Definetly the GH4 or the Sony A7! (both 4k cameras) the Gh4 is pretty cheap too! i would head down to Phillip Blooms channel and watch the GH4 review he does! goes into full depth, that will help you decide weather or not to get it! and if you do get it, i will be one jealous film maker ;)

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому +1

      Depends on your needs as a filmmaker. The GH4 is a great camera in a DSLR form factor with some really incredible tools like native ProRes recording and 4K, with some of the limitations common to DSLR's. The AF100 is likewise a useful camera, with features like XLR inputs, inbuilt ND's and HD-SDI out. If you're a run and gun shooter, a DSLR might suit you better, but the AF100 certainly has a more "professional" look around it - and clients DO care about that surprisingly.
      Comes down to your needs and your budget. If you're not ready or able to part with you AF100 just yet - and there's certainly no rush if you don't NEED the 4K features yet - then an external recorder like the Ninja Blade will breathe new life into your footage and give you MOST of the GH4's feature set (other than 4K) for a third of the price.

    It would be really awesome if you guys also showed the difference with using the ninja and a lower end dslr to see what the difference is then, since the c100 holds up so well already. Btw thanks for the review guys :)

  • @BlendThatFilm
    @BlendThatFilm 10 років тому

    With no Canon equivalent to the GH4 on the immediate horizon do you think this would be a viable route for people with 550d (T2i) series cameras? I see that Magic Lantern offers a clean HDMI out. Would it even work?

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому +1

      Yes and no, you have to be somewhat careful with DSLR's and Magic Lantern. I got an external recorder for use with my 7D, and while magic lantern does allow a clean HDMI out, it crops the footage to a 3:2 aspect ratio, which means you have to scale it in post, losing further image quality. Make sure you research it before you decide on any purchase.

    • @BlendThatFilm
      @BlendThatFilm 10 років тому

      I still think the 550d is an awesome camera and think it's got bags of ability but I'm thinking for the future. Having read Phillip Bloom's article for Digital FilmMaker Magazine on 4K and how most broadcasters still work in SD, I'm not going to panic into buying a new camera for some time but you have to think about getting ready for whatever you want to move onto eventually to keep up with the standard. I've not got ML installed on my camera and don't ever get itchy that I haven't. If Canon suddenly brought out a 900d (or something) that shot 4K in ProRes or RAW then I might start thinking harder.

    • @datdamndavisboy
      @datdamndavisboy 10 років тому

      Luke Nicolaou is correct. I did the same thing with my 7D and got the same results. I'm looking forward to buying a BMPC and using the Ninja 2 on that...but all and all I could have saved my money or used it towards something else.

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      ***** The 7D is not a bad camera (I have one too), but it's time as a budget film camera is past. The Black Magic, especially with the current sale on, is a much better camera in terms of image quality. The MFT lenses are generally cheaper than canon EF lenses, but the Metabones adapter is not a bad choice if you already have some EF lenses. There are some downsides, like battery life, but really the BMPCC is designed as a film camera from the ground up, unlike the 7D.

  • @joshlikescola
    @joshlikescola 10 років тому +1

    I could see the difference in some sections but I don't think this improves quality hugely for UA-cam videos. However if you are displaying your work on a larger screen such as a TV or even cinema I think this recorder would make a huge difference. Also I didn't know about the blue channel before so I'll be sure to look out for it to see how much noise is in my image!

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      UA-cam's compression scheme is absolutely horrible and loses a ton of quality and colour space information, which is why it comes to such a small size. Vimeo gives you much higher quality, but at the cost of more bandwidth.

    2:23, "my c100 only outputs in 8-bit" I thought in your last video, you want to use the recorder to output in a higher bit rate to make color grading more easier? or is it the output of prores or DNxR that makes the color grading easier?

    At our level of VFX work, we typically use After Effects. But what do the big boys like ILM and Weta use? Is it some kind of super-expensive, high-end software that they buy or do they each come up with their own?

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому +2

      Industry post houses typically use software like Nuke, a node-based compositing software in a whole different league to After Effects. They will also use programs like Maya and C4D, but I know that ILM does have some of its own proprietary software.

    • @jahjahisthebest

      Luke is very much correct.... NUKE is amazing.. great software.

    • @LukeNicolaou

    • @jahjahisthebest
      @jahjahisthebest 10 років тому

      Luke Nicolaou I agree completely... I am extremely comfortable with after effects.. but upon using NUKE .. i was completely thrown off.... the user interface takes some time of getting use to..along with the organization of your project... especially if you are use to using simplistic design of drag and drop.. like after effects

    Oh, wow. I was NOT aware that you could line-in your external recorder to the Ninja Blade. Ryan, is there any way you could make a video comparing how the sound quality holds up recording audio into the Ninja vs. syncing it in post and not running the microphone through two separate sources? If the audio still holds up well, this is a must-buy for me.

    Of course another outrageous price for a piece of film equipment, it's too the point that you have to be near well off or rich to get these things if you are not single and livening at home. For people like m with a house, family etc its almost impossible. Oh we'll. good video Ryan!

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      It depends on what you're doing. This certainly falls under the category of pro gear, in the sense that the main functionality will serve people who make high quality video content for a living, and get paid to do it. It's certainly not a hobby toy, but a few pieces of gear like this can easily be paid off in a couple of paid jobs.

    • @AurelTristen
      @AurelTristen 10 років тому

      A big part of why I became a photographer/videographer was so that I could spend money on things like this and have them pay for themselves. You should consider doing something with your hobby as a business (even if it is just on the side) if you want to buy things like this guilt-free and with a clear revenue stream to support it.
      Also look at the Atomos Nonja without the screen. Same great video capture with a lower price.

Everything I've read says it's for Apple editing only (FCPX), but I've seen an Atomos video saying it's for Apple and Adobe. But I can't find any info on how to implement it for Premiere Pro workflows. The Atomos forums come up short too. Any info on this Film Riot ?

  • @NICKSTER117
    @NICKSTER117 10 років тому

    Hey Ryan, the Ninja 2 recorder does record in 10 bit from the c100, but there's bugs in Premiere CC that screws up Prores. People have been getting 10 bit output but premiere can screw it up. use DNxHD to get the higher bit rate in premiere

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      The Blade will save a file that is 10 bit 4:2:2, but the C100 as far as I know only supports 8 bit uncompressed via HDMI.

    • @NICKSTER117
      @NICKSTER117 10 років тому

      Ah, I must've mistakenly read somewhere the c100 outputs 10 bit, but there is more headroom since you are encoding a 8 bit stream into 10 bit. Hopefully Canon will release firmware for 10 bit output. The thing about prores is still true, sadly.

    Hey, Ryan and crew!
    Just a quick question out of curiosity;
    I know you guys have covered this damn near twelve thousand, seventy two hundred and forty three point five times already, but I'm a low budget video maker... I actually mostly do photography work relevant to cars etc.
    I'm starting to do edits for cars and car events etc, and I was just curious on how I could get some nice steady shots such as slider shots or even just pans etc without having to spend much more than $30? I have a Cheap tripod that coverts to a mono-pod and I was curious if I could some how use or modify that to suffice??

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      Film Riot did a video on a DIY slider that would be relevant, as would the DIY shoulder mount if you're looking for some sexy camera movement, and your tripod should be sufficient for simple pans and tilts. If it can't, it's worthless, so put some money into a good tripod :)

      The beauty of film making is that it is a collaboration between dozens of different people with different skill sets. Find people with similar interests and tastes in film making with different skills or passions to yours and work together as a team. @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      Kuunal Deshmukh NO. Never, NEVER give up on your dreams, you won't be good at everything, or even a lot of things, no one person can be. That is why film crews are made up of HUNDREDS of people, each with different abilities and talents. Search your local city for Facebook groups for film makers, actors, script writers, the lot. I guarantee you will find people to work with. Additionally, film school is a GREAT way to make contacts, learn a solid foundation of all the skills and help to hone the abilities you want to perfect. Just NEVER give up.

      videocopilot.net is a fantastic resource for tutorials on After Effects. It's where a lot of UA-cam VFX artists go for information.

      Lynda.com has some good courses for AE, as stated above, Video copilot.net is great for tutorials for basics at from video copilot check out www.videocopilot.net/basic/. Also, Adobe has great resources at Adobe TVm for cs6 try tv.adobe.com/show/learn-after-effects-cs6/ for Adobe After effects CC try tv.adobe.com/show/learn-after-effects-cc/. A youtube channel called Mt. Mograph has some excellent motion graphics tutorial, try his first basic ones.If you're not a visual learner, here is 400 page book from adobe - www.adobemarketplace.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=978-0-321-92960-0&click=281&Google&gclid=CMGi7t2w378CFSxk7AodsCgA3A Here are some more tutorials from Adobe helpx.adobe.com/after-effects.html. Another site, AE tuts plus is great! Ive done many tutorial from them, I think they are called something different now, but here is the link, this page has some of their 3d and motion graphic tutorials cgi.tutsplus.com. Search youtube tutorials or After effects basics and you'll learn a lot too. If you have questions, google is your best friend, then forums. Always try and find the solution yourself, you'll learn so much more than having the answer spoon fed to you when you run into a wall when learning. After effects may seem crazy at first, but once you can understand how it works, you'll be making some awesome stuff. Good luck my friend!

    Ryan I am a little confused as to why you chose the C100 over the gh4. I mean, if you can do 8-bit 4:2:0 4K internally (which in post can be converted to 10-bit 4:4:4 Full HD). I know, low light an ergonomics are just out of the question for the gh4 but honestly you seem to have enough lights and rigging equipment to overcome both of those issues.

    • @MCZero2Hero
      @MCZero2Hero 10 років тому +3

      I would agree with you but the C100 is in fact made for video unlike the GH4, which may have OUTSTANDING video capabilities, but it is still in fact a dslr, issues like rolling shutter, audio capabilities etc, keep it from being as good as the C100.(If you are rich like Ryan and can afford it)

    • @filmriot
      @filmriot  10 років тому +17

      Check out my C100 review episode, I give all my reasons there. But long story short, I needed a proper video production camera for Film Riot. GH4 is awesome, but all dslr/mirrorless cams are made for still photography first, video second. The issues that come with that make Film Riot on a deadline more difficult. The GH4 looks amazing though! However, you can't truly convert 8-bit 4:2:0 to 10-bit 4:4:4. If the info isn't there in the original, there's no bringing it back. I mean technically you can convert it to that, but it wont make the original image better.

      I was just kidding , guess sarcasm doesnt translate well over da internet, either way great to see Ryan active in the comments as always!

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому +1

      You can't up-convert 8 bit 4:2:0 in any meaningful capacity, just like converting 96kbps MP3's to 320kbps won't improve their quality. Like any camera, you get the camera you need for your style or line of work. As Ryan mentioned, the GH4 is a great camera, but it's still a DSLR which may or may not be the form factor you desire. On top of that, a 4K workflow is time-consuming and expensive, and for a lot of people, completely unnecessary. That leaves it with internal ProRes recording as a primary advantage over the C100, something that the Ninja Blade helps to remedy.

      Correct, although it's typically good practice to save both, in the event that one or the other becomes corrupted or lost for whatever reason.

    Is there any way to extract 4K raw out the c100II?

    • @dh1163
      @dh1163 5 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, no. And it's a damn sad thing since the C100MkII uses the same friggin' 4K sensor as the C300. But, think about it. If the C100 provided RAW 4K at an SDI or HDMI output, and you could couple that with an external recorder, Canon will have shot themselves in the foot for 5 grand.

    I've never liked the look of AVCHD, especially on lower end cameras it really messes up the look of the footage and makes it harder to import and watch on Windows. MP4s and MOVs might be big but it's always the way I go.

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому

      MP4's are generally the container in which H264 or MPEG codecs are wrapped in, and they're just as bad for aquisition as AVCHD, if not worse, but decent for UA-cam export. MOV is generally the better container as you said, with a ProRes or DNxHD codec, as they're better quality and easier to work with.

    Is the camera so important? I think the editing software you used is more important. To bad it cost alot

    • @LukeNicolaou
      @LukeNicolaou 10 років тому +1

      Well, without a camera, you have nothing to edit ;) All in all, the editing software is more or less the same, it's how you use it that effects the outcome. But the camera most certainly has an impact across production and post production for a variety of reasons.

      Are you talking about actual film stock or just film-making in general? You don't NEED this for film-making, although it certainly helps, but I very much doubt it would work with film stock, since this requires a digital signal via HDMI, something that a film camera doesn't output :P
