    I had a friend who was a cab driver, and the daughter of a lifelong cabbie. She told me that if her dad needed an opening to change lanes or whatever, he began driving erratically. Alarmed people automatically respond to get away from the foolish driver, which gave him what he wanted.

    I was watching a show about the lives of this family and those around them that lived in Canada. They seemed awesome. They worked really hard, were very smart, extremely tough living in such harsh conditions. A truck full of produce had turned over, which apparently happens not unfrequently in that area and fresh produce was everywhere. The entire town rushed to where the truck was and gathered up the produce. One of the individuals said, the company would not be able to sell the produce after it was on the ground. I am assuming for insurance reasons. Then this individual also added that they do not get a lot of fresh produce because they are above the artic circle. It was in the Yukon area. The truck was headed towards Alaska; I am assuming the region of Alaska above the arctic circle. This means food can get there. I am assuming gov't policies make available the possibility of the food getting there. Annexing in Canada, at least that part with those awesome hard-working people may not be the worst idea for both sides.

    If US policymakers could consult only one economist in the world to guide them through Trump's second presidency, they should choose Michael Pettis, a renowned expert on international trade especially as it pertains to China where he's long taught finance at Peking University. Pettis can tell policymakers specifically how the US can intervene in trade in ways that truly benefit the country as a whole. And he's always lucid enough for laymen not only in his books but also in his interviews and talks many of which are on UA-cam as well as in his prolific blog on Twitter X. Compared to other economists, you can rely more on what he says because it's grounded in history not just theory. A self-described "junkie for economic history," he insists that being versed in economic history is a superpower for an economist. Listening to him one soon learns that the details of tariffs -- exactly how they're applied and to whom -- make all the difference. One also learns that the US would benefit if it placed a modest tax on incoming foreign capital.

      Its unfortunate that is the conclusion you draw from me sharing my views. I try to be as transparent as possible. And have advocated being long US equities for several years. If I am coming across as a permabear than that is something I need to do a better job of addressing. I do consider myself being perma prudence and perma risk management. But a big part of my thesis is US equities would melt up...and that has happened and I have been long US equities the whole time. Thanks for listening.

    • @omrit2
      @omrit2 7 днів тому

      @@MilkshakesPodwhen someone is persistently bearish SHORT term across all of 2023 and 2024, then despite vague claims of long term bullishness -- they're a permabear. Otherwise please point to a single episode in these past two years where you expressed short term bullishness.

      @@MilkshakesPodit's impossible for us to know what your actual position is in your portfolio. I am referring to what was expressed in the podcast each and every episode, which was near term bearish. I also remember the term net-short in most episodes, so definitely not "advocated long US equities". And the "melt-up" narrative is certainly not something you held in the pod, and is attributable to David Hunter, Yardeni and a few others. But again, point us to one single episode where you were bullish short-term.

    Gees, tarriffs work if you put them on in 1985 to stop the loss of mfg. To put them on now only creates inflation, full stop.
    The problem then becomes, can the 2 parent working. Loss of wages, already 30% increases in prices be absorbed ?
    No... they cannot. I am that family. Ww did pay off everything. House, rental, cars, etc. At same time, income has fallen for 30 years to real costs of real good we either need, or are forced to pay for...
    Even the price of a swimming pool pump has doubled. 350 up to 700...
    It is ridiculous! Thus, more tarriffs cannot be absorbed in Amrrica. Maybe Canada has discretionary income after 30 years of pounding. We dont...
    Amazon offers a 20$ avg per hour wage with enthusiastic TV commercial. You could both work there and not afford a home. Where does the money come from ?
    It dounds like you have lost touch with that level of person. Or at least dont keep one close enough to know the effect of rising prices on which is at least 85% of America

      Exactly, time in the market, not timing the market. But to answer your question instead of Brent: he's a permabear despite his denials here and is positioned net short, so the vague long term bulishness is merely a show he's putting on so as to seem level-headed and as reputation insurance in case no short term pullback.

    40:40 ... "Equity Allocation Exposure" indicator ... I've seen BofA or RBC reports that state that this is mostly in the overvalued big names and almost the opposite for EM, EU/UK mkts and U.S. small & midcap cyclicals. It suggests any sp500 drawdown would be in the overvalued but hit all to some degree due to ETFs & liquidity pressures.
    .... ALSO.... what the f*** is "Equity Allocation Exposure" ??? WTF is it actually measuring? To be more credible, you need to define what you want to use for your narrative.
