Love your content stef! If you fly an older model plane with no 12v, get a reliable powerbank! I flew around Australia in a 172R with a samsung 10,000mah powerbank and it never let me down. The ipad didnt budge off 100% even on 12 hour days of flying.
On to it ..first try out of the mini iPad 6 in the Cessna 180 Wanaka to Big Bay West Coast NZ today .... getting the protective case and have turned off functions as advised ...top stuff appreciated.
If you are flying an approach, especially in IMC have the approach plate selected on your back up EFB. Speaking from experience. My iPad overheated and shut down half way down an RNAV approach. Having the approach quickly available on the backup iPad avoids having to go missed whilst you sort yourself out.
Yeah backup plates/charts is a really important point. I didn't want to touch on that in this video, but it's legally required in most places and is just good airmanship. Thanks for sharing that story, and nice work having that backup available.
My new favourite aviation channel! I'm based out of YSBK, and as an aspiring pilot and filmmaker, absolutely love your videos. Seriously amazing. Keep it up!
Hey lorenplanes, welcome to the channel, thanks for subscribing! Lots of travel and aviation content coming the next few months, a great time to subscribe :) Thanks for the kind words, stef
Will definitely stay tuned for more ;) I've got a couple flying videos coming out myself, obviously nothing to the level of yours, as they are basically unedited flights, but one day I'm looking to make videos kind of like your own. :)
Do you think that the 11 inch ipad pro would be a good for inflight use. I know the mini is obviously the better size, but for every thing else I would like to use the ipad for, the 11 inch pro makes more since. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
Here's another tip: Do every 10th flight planning or so the old fashioned way using paper and pen.. just in case one day you drop the iPad on the tarmac and the fuel truck backs on to it 💔
Thanks, very good. I'm going to use these! One comment: the "plastic thing" on the front doesn't protect your ipad from rain. It protects the screen from scratching.
iPad has been ordered and is on the way. I can't wait to start using it and your tips definitely helped. Slightly worried the older operating system of the iPad mini 3 won't work with newer versions of the apps I want.
Very good points there, what is your opinion about using ipad vs android tablets? Personally I don't like Apple products but I purchased an ipad mini as many pilots believe they're the better tablet for aviation use.
Don't worry about saving those websites if you have AvPlan, like you do. That information is all in the APP!!!! Under the weather page. Including ship tins of other features from Wind Aloft. I have the professional version, so perhaps the basic VFR package doesn't include this? Not sure. Try to use the flying APP (such as AvPlan) as much as possible as you can quickly flick between pages, rather than flick between APPS. But if you want to flick between APPs, use the "four finger swipe" gesture. Also, you can overlay APPs in the one screen by opening an APP, then swiping up slowly to get the quick bar at bottom, then swipe and drag the second APP making an overlay split screen. Handy for Marine Pilot transfer and having marine traffic up at the same time as AvPlan.
BTW, where on the airplane do you put your iPad? I personally think, to put it on thigh is not too good. It requires me to head down quite often. So, I'm thinking to buy suction mount.
I just bought a refurbished iPad mini and just did all of that a few weeks ago. Forgot to lock the orientation before my cross country though and yes it was annoying it spinning around.
I found out about a feature of the iPad by accident. Whilst at a holding point Looking into the sun I went to turn on my iPad which I have dash mounted. When it came up I found it had reversed colours. Decided to take off when able to set the autopilot, when searching for the problem via my phone. An hour later found that triple tapping the home/on button turns the iPad the night mode on and off. Just thought I would mention it in case like me, you accidentally tap the home button three time.
Great Stuff! ... Like you, I swear by my iPad in the cockpit. It's hard to believe just a few short years ago, pilots used to carry paper charts everywhere!
Thank you, I got that case off eBay. Just searched for heavy duty iPad mini cases and found that one. It was a while ago so it might have changed since though. But it's just a cheap one from China I think, not a brand name cover.
I use one iPad for most of my browsing, email, etc., so having one with only aviation apps is not convenient. I've put all my aviation related apps on a single page with personal apps elsewhere. I do like the tip about security - maybe I'll put changing security settings in my pre-flight routine. In any event, nice tips - thanks.
Cheers Ben, good points there, and yeah I do understand if you have one iPad for all uses. As long as it's organised well and your flying apps aren't suffering during flight (from notifications, disk space, etc) but it sounds like you've got that covered. Thanks mate.
There is one other thing I do and that is have an email account dedicated for all my aviation needs rather than my actual personal account, this is to keep the IPAD purely for aviation. i treat my flight time as a business, they are seperate to all my personal accounts including bank accounts, keeping an ipad puerly for aviation is a great way of doing it. most of us have smart phones and or other tablets that can be used for the everyday things. I do like using the ipad because my partner and i can message each other via imessage without having to take out my phone. a friend of mine created something for my partner that is really simillar to SAR time, if i have not checked in at my estimated landing time, a workflow will trigger to my partner to check Flight24 if the plane I am flying has ADS-B to check if i am still flying, if i am in within data range i can with a simple push of a button to extend for a further 30min or have a pre made message stating i am still flying and at the same time send Lat and Long of the location that it was sent. Technology has progresed so much and a lot of the tools are free to use. went on a bit off track but i wanted to share what i do in some cases.
Great vid Stef - you've really helped inspire me to get back in to PPL training after a bit of a hiatus in recent years. Question for you was what do you use to mount your iPad in the cockpit? I've seen people mount them to the control column on aircraft like PA28s.
That's awesome James, great to hear you're getting back into flying. We all have breaks, I logged one flight back in 2010 due to some personal/financial reasons, breaks are not uncommon. I don't mount my iPad in the cockpit, but I stow it for takeoff and landing. In flight I keep it on my lap or under my kneeboard if the sun is shining into the cockpit (I can direct a vent from the air-conditioning on it to keep it cool).
@@StefanDrury Love all the videos. But be cautious of loose iPads in the cockpit. Have you seen the report about the Chinook fire fighting helicopter crash. Caused by an iPad jamming the tail rotor pedals. ua-cam.com/video/P0N15ihORHA/v-deo.html
Hi Stefan. My tip would be to use a kneepad to hold your ipad on top of your leg so it wont fall to the side. Otherwise you can place it near the window with suction devices. Best regards
Yeah that's a good tip actually, the iPad should be secured for takeoff and landing. I've seen iPad kneeboard holders at Sporty's in the US, not seen many here in Australia. Maybe I'll take a look at the airshow this week and see if I can find one to review.

If you can afford it get the cell one but don’t sign up for a cell plan that way you still get the benefit of the GPS which the wifi only version doesn’t have. I believe cell gives better GPS positioning but please verify that first. And I personally prefer mini but know some pilots who fly with full size. I think mini is the best size for GA flying, but it’s very much personal preference.
Thanks Luke, I use AvPlan EFB as my main flight planning app and in-flight EFB. Been using that full-time for about a year now, used it on my Outback trip and all my recent flights (Tasmania, etc).
