Ive had an 03 DR650, since 08. 51,000 hard miles on it, not one thing has broke. Lots of dirt bashing, lots of 75 to 80 MPH hiway days....never used a drop of oil, nothing. Also put a dual star centerstand on it years ago, used off of ADV. Cogent shock is a great thing also. I found a used set of Woody's Wheels for mine in the 19/17" size. Fatter than stock..................bike handles like it was meant to have that size of wheels. In my miles, I have found the 525 chain to last longer than 520. 1 thing. The CPS, crank position sensor, on these things can die, a spare carried can save the day. 30.00 part.
Heaps of miles to go on that youngster. My current DR has 317,000 klms on it so far, sadly had to pull it apart at 260,000 klms to replace the gearbox output shaft as the splines were badly gouged out by the front sprocket, also replaced the rings and she is good as gold, it is a 2014. My dear old 2005 has 495,000 klms and still runs perfect, it has been rebuilt a couple of times, even blew up the gearbox at 199,000 klms, just replaced the cases and threw in a second hand gearbox. The DR is such a simple bike that rebuilds are cheap to do, I can pull the engine out, rebuild it and have it going again in a weekend.
Very impressive I got a 2013 I paid $3,000 for it she has 5,000 Miles when I bought her she now has 6500 I've had her for 3 years I'm handicapped to I'm missing my right leg I'll be keeping mine till the day I can't ride anymore
A true motorcyclist. He knows his DR back to front. I love my '08 with 129k KMs (80k miles) on it. Still pulls like a train and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
Awesome!! On my 3rd DR...not because the 1st 2 wore out...more because I thought there was a better unicorn. Keep coming back to the DR and here to stay now. They really are fun to ride and so, so versatile. Suzuki knows about this bike that if it isn't broke don't fix it. The ease of maintenance and ease of working on this bike coupled with the HUGE parts availability make it a complete No Brainer long term keeper bike. Good for the Mad Max era coming...haha
My first DR650 was a brand new '05 model. I put about 24k miles on it before I sold it in '15. Now I have a '21 model that I got new, I missed the other one so much.
Great to hear from a bloke with such knowledge and miles on the DR650. Mines at 50,000 kilometers (30,000 miles?) and runs like a clock. Great machines, it's a shame they don;t import them into Australia anymore 😪

My Brother is buying a ‘22 V-Strom 650 and last weekend I looked at and sat on a DR650 at Suzuki in Dallas. If my ‘21 T7 were paid for I would’ve bought that DR!
Nice! I've got 40,000 on my 19 that I bought new. My favorite motorcycle I've ever owned. And I've had 23! Been across the country 4 times. Will go plenty more!
I had an 09. I sunk about 2k in mods to it. But, I put over 55,000 miles on it. I switched to a KTM 690 in 2016. I really miss the character of my DR. I rode it hard on and off road. It’s like a cockroach. I tried but couldn’t kill it.
The DR was fun but the 690 is a lot more fun. The only advantage the DR has is the availability of comfortable seats for long highway hauls. The 690 can run full heated gear the DR cannot. Suspension, power, ABS of the 690 trumps the DR any day. The DRs were cheap at one time, I paid $4,700 for my 09 new. Those days are gone. It’s still half the price of the 690 but consider I had to add almost $2,000 in accessories to make the DR right for me.

I have a Tenere 700 now, love that one, but still miss the DR. Safe riding & hope you get 150,000 miles out of her. Cheers from Ontario, Canada, Ronny
As it's in the 30 degree range my DL650 sits covered waiting for a ride to work tomorrow . Still just broke in at 67,000 ,5 sets of chains , sprockets a few less sets of tires and that 3rd (4th?) clutch cable is about to snap I wonder should I get a used DR next? Maybe but as a Minneapolis guy , think Ill take my spare clutch cable with tomorrow! and think about it I do like the DR and at my age it is top of the list!
If all you do is street riding the DL650 is the way to go. And you should expect well over 100k miles on the DL650 engine, it's far more advanced than the old DR engine. I have a DR650, but my friend has the DL650, and he's right at 140k now and the engine is still perfect. His is an '09.
I have 2 of 'em...the "bat" ,cause is black and the "sheep" because of the sheep skin on the seat. Good machines...I rather like more the bat , don't know why but the sheep rides more like a motocross bike i am to grown for that.
Great bike. It was always my favourite 650 trailie. Never owned one. I had an XT500E in the '80s. Early '90s when I lived in Japan, the baby DR: DR250SH. Great bike for zipping around Tokyo.
You can bypass the clutch safety feature. Just move a few wires around. There's video's that show how it's done. Super easy. I have a 2013 and I love it.
I'm curious what the guts look like with 5k mile oil changes. Suzuki spec'd 3k oil changes and I wonder if the motul was enough to keep the oil from getting cooked with such long intervals. I've got a '00 and '02 with 28k and 38k respectively. The '00 made it to 25k before I pulled it down for a base gasket leak and ended up getting overhauled when I found damage from a prior owner. The '02 is going strong at 38k but it needs rings, she's burning oil now. I'd be right there next to him ridin' to California; just would need a tire swap first.
Motul he's using is a super high quality full synthetic. The oil itself won't "break down" like petroleum based oils. It keeps its lubing capacities longer. However, that said, impurities still get in there from the air filtration system and is the reason I still change more frequently.
If you follow the wires from the left clutch housing to the wiring harness in the headlight shell, unplug the male and female connectors plug the male and female leads from the wiring harness together ,you delete the switch to pull the clutch to start feature, I also followed the two wires from the kickstand kill switch up towards the battery ,solder the two wires together and heat shrink the connection you delete the kickstand down kill switch , I removed mine and threw it away ,and cut off the mounting tab.....😊,excellent vidio, ride on !
Awesome to hear. I picked up a '98 with only 9K miles on it for $2,800. Unfortunately it was stock and I have put over $3K to make it my "forever" bike.
My dog and I rode 34,000 miles in 2023 and hope match that this year. Way overloaded and it still goes anywhere and takes on any environment with trouble free reliability
Love mine (2009, 7K miles), so far. It's a cream puff, that's never been off road, but I plan to change that. Installed multiple accessories (Tusk cases, skid plate, Seat Concepts seat, digital display screen, etc), anxious for the first good trip.

Old farmer showed me the oldest thing in his barn .. a hammer .. I told him it looked almost new .. he said .. what do you expect its had 8 new handles and 2 new heads over the years
I am not familiar with Motul 7100 but I like hearing those details. I just got a used 2018 DR200S I may switch from ECSTAR R5000 to Motul now after seeing this! Awesome thumper, I love simple & basic! In my cars I had great luck with Mobil-1 always did over 250k though I did mostly highway miles.
Motul is a high quality imported oil. But don't underestimate the Ecstar from Suzuki. I use that in full synthetic plus I'll use Amsoil full synthetic. All great and you can't go wrong. I think you just pay a little more for the Motul. I only use full synthetic and still change frequently...the cost for long term performance and protection.
I think that plastic gear that drives the oil pump deteriorates with age, not so much with km, or maybe both, 20 years old or so, change it! many 50.000 km bikes die of this cheap sprocket breaking off a tooth.. I know bdcause I rang up a few whos bikes were up for sale in parts, I asked them why? Most said because of that sprocket!
Got a DR five years ago and never looked back. Will only switch if someone makes a modern 400 dual sport. I imagine its coming soon from ktm with their new stroked 390 motor.
note that the ride hight is adjustable on this bike. stock is 34 inches high. but you can go lower. I was born with mild cerebral palsy So I needed a low sitting ride hight to throw may leg over and balance the bike on may right.
For me personally this is the way I expect edvertisement of a vehicle to be. Not that crap we see every day, shiny vehicle, well photoshopped with beautiful ladies next to it.
Those are great budget bikes , ive replaced a few base gaskets in the older ones but I see very little problems with them. That sed now that I've ridden the ktm 690s I probably couldn't go back.
Very cool. I ride a DR200 in town. It's fun, but sometimes a little too slow. It's the right tool for the job though. I've been looking at the 650 as an upgrade.
You don't need premium, but if you can get it, the non-ethanol gas is better to use because it won't gum up the carburetor if the bike sits for a period of time.
@@CurtPottorff Mine has never pre-ignited, or got hot, on regular gas, it gets hot here in nor cal...............that big oem oil cooler really helps the air cooled single stay cool.

Got home from Indian and was able to watch this video....my self & Brothers Bond counted your "So"'s LOL
Great video BTW!
Damn man that's awesome currently looking for one hope i can get my hands on one before riding season
Well obviously built to run a long time. That’s impressive mileage.
King moment
All those miles amazingly without bearings for the camshaft , go figure.
36,000 kms in 8 years on mine. Just needed a pulse / pickup coil
Great review, solid bike, and two great guys. I want a Dr650 or even a 600.
Nice bike, and cool stories to go with it!
Did he use the stock gearing or did he read your just for highway?
Awesome bike & great story!
So bad ass
note that the ride hight is adjustable on this bike. stock is 34 inches high. but you can go lower. I was born with mild cerebral palsy So I needed a low sitting ride hight to throw may leg over and balance the bike on may right.
Amazing! to think I'm going to buy 2024 model and it's identical to a 20 year old one!
🎉He needs a new camera guy. His wording was awful, like he knew nothing about motorcycles.
For me personally this is the way I expect edvertisement of a vehicle to be. Not that crap we see every day, shiny vehicle, well photoshopped with beautiful ladies next to it.
What about the idler chain sprocket did everybody says breaks off the frame?? Just curious
Yes. Remove it. Never have to think about it again.
Those are great budget bikes , ive replaced a few base gaskets in the older ones but I see very little problems with them. That sed now that I've ridden the ktm 690s I probably couldn't go back.
I get that you didn't fret about the NSU, but if you fixed the oil pump sprocket, it was right there!
Excellent, real world overview. Thanks!
Mr what's up with that? You could not find a worse guy to ask you redundant questions. What a putz !
Awesome bike. Thanks for sharing..
Very cool. I ride a DR200 in town. It's fun, but sometimes a little too slow. It's the right tool for the job though. I've been looking at the 650 as an upgrade.
You should hurry, 2023 is the last year.
@@selrahc2061 boo. The 200 was discontinued already. I'm sure they do best of the 400 out of the three, so I'm sure it will be last.
@@selrahc2061 True?? Where did you hear that? Just bought a 23...
You should name it Wilbur because that's SOME PIG!
I plan on getting my 2000 dr650 to 100k plus I’m at 40k right now
Yep, I gotta add a DR one of these days.
Love mine. Trying to figure out why it stalls and sputters after I get gas.
A true testament to the reliability, and versatility of this motorcycle!
Preach!
Amazing bike, great owner.
Nice bike. I did not quite get what you said regarding the type of gasoline you use. I always put prenium in mine. 91. Am I overdoing it ?
Yes. The engine only requires 87 octane. Anything over that is a waste of money. Low compression engine
@@CurtPottorff 91000 miles is living proof
You don't need premium, but if you can get it, the non-ethanol gas is better to use because it won't gum up the carburetor if the bike sits for a period of time.
@@CurtPottorff Mine has never pre-ignited, or got hot, on regular gas, it gets hot here in nor cal...............that big oem oil cooler really helps the air cooled single stay cool.
YES NON-ETHANOL GAS IS BETTER FOR CARBY!
Hell is a real place Bro- you better get right with Jesus! .02
This is the bike that yells CAN I GET A BIG BELL OF HAY YEAH . If or when it's no longer made I'm going to throw up . I'm really wanting to buy a brand new 2023 & this video is worth 100,000's if not millions for the Suzuki company they did it right from day one tried & true well proven, HAY YEAH.
where can I buy one of those 4.9 gallon tanks for may dr650? Thats just what I need for long distance rides from Joshua Tree CA where I live to may family home in Chicago.
PROCYCLE!
