Love the podcast! We always enjoy the podcast but we kept saying how much we will miss Paige while on her trip but hope you will post knit pics on your IG and we HOPE HOPE HOPE, you, Sarah, will still do a few podcasts so we can keep up with your podcasts and get a chance to send you messages to keep you company while Paige is gone. Beautiful WIPs you both are working on. ❤

I just need to tell Paige that talking about your perfect sock needle isn't silly and its totally interesting! 😊
And- I also went through many different iterations for my sock knitting and landed on the exact same everything as you-
ChiaoGoo 75cm cable and 13cm tips, separating my stitches in half. Perfection and I love my sock knitting!
Thanks for another lovely podcast you guys 💙

I've just returned from a long trip, my top tips are:
    - keep your projects simple (there's lots of time for plain stockinette while travelling and chatting, but rarely time to sit and think with a cable chart)
-4ply projects. They're smaller and lighter.
    - have your go-to sock pattern and needles handy (if you like socks). You can buy sock yarn as you go, and have a collection of socks at the end which remind you of where you've been. And you can never have too many socks!
(Edit, ha! I commented this before watching you talk about your beautiful socks!)

Thanks for sharing the fun and enthusiasm. The sweaters you are wearing are gorgeous. It's nice to watch other Australian podcasters - yarn stores I know, BWM, footy references, same season etc. But mostly, I've enjoyed watching as you both are so beautifully expressive about your love of knitting. Thanks again. :)

Not sure if you're already travelling, but I recommend using packing cubes and VACUM BAGS!!! Every time you need to pack everything again, you can ask for a vacuum cleaner in the hotel, b&b or gas station, so you can carry more yarn in a limited space! 😊

Regarding the hiking projects, I tend to bring a simple shawl pattern. For example, for 3-weeks hiking in Scotland, I took Kallara by Ambah O'Brien, or for 2-weeks hiking in Denmark, I took Londoner by Justyna Lorkowska. It works great!

Oh Sarah! I feel your pain about undoing a tubular cast on - I did exactly the same thing! I knit the Caramel sweater (Petite Knit) that has a turtle neck. I'd knit it too long and thought I could just undo it from the cast on, but encountered exactly the same issue you did. I too was cutting, trying to get clear stitches. In the end I figured it out - it is tricky but do-able, however it was the worst knitting experience of my knitting career! Soooooo frustrating! What I love though is that I have learnt a very unique lesson and now I know. 😂

Good morning! I feel super inspired to knit socks now, I have never done any, and have gone down a loooong rabbit hole of Summer Lee videos, and have re-emerged the other side ready to roll. Paige - I have just moved literally all the way across the globe, for a year. The packing was PAINFUL, especially not knowing exactly what kind of weather I'd encounter. I ended up packing 3 jumpers of varying weight (the heaviest/thickest being 100% alpaca), and the plan is to layer a big puffer over the top when it gets to -20C. I just went to the Arctic Circle at the beginning of this year where it got down to -10C ("heatwave" lol) and I found wearing a merino base-layer (like Icebreaker 120-200) singlet, then long sleeve top, then a wooly handknit, and then a windproof jacket was plenty warm enough for me. I think don't take too many knits, personally I'm so wiped out on trips that I don't get much time to knit, and then you also have less space to acquire special yarns that you just happen to stumble upon along the way. Good luck with your packing, in the end, just bring whatever sparks joy, and you can buy anything that you're missing xx

Long term travel tips! My trip was only 6 weeks, I brought an in-progress sweater, in-progress vest, and enough sock yarn for one pair with plans to pick up yarn abroad if I needed wanted to cast on something different. I was mostly happy with the amount that I brought, I didn't even finish the sweater (bc I had sneaky purchases and COs).
Totally understand not wanting to be a yarn goblin and use what you have at home, but there is really something wonderful about buying yarn abroad and being able to have that finished object and remember your travels 💕
Use the vacuum sealed bags for knits that you want to bring to wear and for yarn!! SUCH a big difference in suitcase usage.
    Have so much fun!

I feel Paige's pain re packing yarn! I'm moving to Europe for a year (literally tomorrow) with a single suitcase - I'm taking a beanie wip and four balls of sock yarn with the intention that I'll buy yarn once I'm there. I hope you have the best time on your trip! 🧡

I love how excited Paige gets cause I’m gasping right along with her. And i second Sara’s cardigan adventure suggestion. It’s ridiculous but I think that’s part of the fun. That and maybe your perfect sock combo with a minimal amount of socks yarn with you (also allows some instant acquisition allowance for your travels)

For socks, I do like a traveling magic loop! It’s 2 circular needles a front one and a back one and I feel like it makes my tension soooooo much better. Can’t do 9 inch circulars and I don’t have fun making with magic loop so this is my perfect solution

    • @twopurlsinapod
      @twopurlsinapod  3 місяці тому +1

Yesss love this. I actually used to do this a lot, and didn't realise it was possible to do magic loop with just one long needle (which is what I do now) but I do still like that approach as it's really flexible. Shorties are my nightmare...

Hey Paige! So excited for you and your trip!!
I did many months of backpacking in South America and in Europe. I have some tips :)
One of my tricks is to pack some clothes you can part with. If I found something cool I wanted to buy, I would donate something I brought to swap it out and make space for the new thing. Often in my last weeks of traveling, I would just get rid of basically everything I brought with me, and fill my backpack with things I wanted to buy wherever I was traveling.
I know it's a bit hardcore, but I was a super minimalist (I traveled with only a 35 liter pack). I never felt like I was lacking anything important. I would hand wash clothes every other day or so (or drop them off at a laundry place) to make sure I always had clean clothes.
For knitting, you can bring a sweater project, and if you finish it, you can ship it home. Or if you want to wear it, you can swap it out and send home another sweater you brought to make room. (to buy yarn of course).I know shipping can get expensive but it's worth it to not be overburdened on a trip or have to pass on once in a lifetime yarn buys.
Hope this all makes sense...! ALWAYS ALWAYS recommend a hiking style backpack over a suitcase too if you're going from place to place.. running to catch a bus on some cobblestone street with a suitcase is torturous.

I usually knit my socks two at a time on ChiaoGoo minis 2.25 mm with 30" or 37" cables. My trick is I also put a different color stitch bulb shape marker on each loop, it makes it very easy to slip the needles from one side of the cable to the other, no loss of time. I only use another set of needles for the heels and switch back to one cable two needles for the rest of the socks. One big advantage, my socks are always the same lenght even if my tensoin changes a bit from daylight to night time. I knit mitts, mittens and glove the same way, except when I get to the fingers. Have a goo day !!!

Hi Paige! Your trip away sounds amazing! For my 1 year away I only packed 12,5 kilos of stuff. I wasn’t much of a knitter back then and only had two skeins of sock yarn and dpn’s with me. Where did I travel you ask?! In Australia, New Zealand and Fiji so I guess I didn’t need as much! 😂 that’s also one of the reasons I love your podcast so much, it brings up so many memories just hearing you talk. Im currently knitting two pairs of socks two different ways, one of DPNs which I prefer over magic loop and the other im knitting flat colourwork and it is a NIGHTMARE. Lol not really but it’s suboptimal, im enjoying the challenge though. They’re also AFL themed, my brothers are Essendon fans so I decided to make a design of the old bomber logo in stitch fiddle and I’m knitting it flat cos apparently I hate myself.
You’re cardigan is going to be beautiful and I’d be really interested in seeing how Paige steeks the sides on her bow vest to resize it. Didn’t know that was possible!!!

  • @KnitsByNayla

I’m not in my sock era yet but I feel it coming! Maybe when the weather gets a bit colder here. Hope you enjoy your travels Paige! Being away for 6 months sounds amazing and also like howww?! If you don’t already, check out Emily Curtis (emweecurt or gently chaotic knits). She’s been traveling all year with her husband and I think she’s found a good balance of bringing FO’s versus projects versus when she might acquire yarny things on her travels.
Also still so angry for you every time I think about the zipper sweater pattern being the same across versions. I think designers like Rebecca Clow (thecreabea) really do it right with just adding updates to existing patterns or releasing them as a mega pattern. I’d rather pay more for one that has everything, than pay multiple times for the same thing with minimal edits.
Sarah your grandmothers bag reminds me of a video/series by Taylor Earl (wool needles hands on YT). She had an heirloom bag that was fading so she reknit the body and attached to original handles.

I'm so jealous about your trip, Paige! I'll miss you while you're gone. Sarah, please continue to post, or do a zoom podcast! I'm the Canadian you influenced into buying the BWM woodlands last year. I've knit the pink and the grey but I haven't found a special enough project for the river sand yet.
I wanted to ask, did you two use any resources for picking the colors for the Chestnut sweater? I recently got into stranded colourwork and I'm OBSESSED. I want to make the Yell cardigan, but I'm so bad with picking colors and I don't have an lys with that yarn nearby.
Personally I wouldn't bring the Chestnut sweater on the trip. I feel like the most reliable knitting times will be while you're traveling, and it looks like too much project to comfortably knit while on a bus or a train. Esp with all those colours. My advice would be to cast on something that's fingering weight and stockinette. Have you ever wanted a cumulus tee or an outline tee? I knit my outline tee over 3 weeks in Turkey and the thought of doing that much stockinette now is daunting but exactly what I needed at the time. Also make sure to bring your ribbing needle tips and extra tips and cables. That way if you buy yarn you are ready to cast on! Oh and the travel packs of soak. They're great to use for travel laundry as well as blocking.

    • @twopurlsinapod
      @twopurlsinapod  Місяць тому +1

Hello! Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Honestly for the chestnut we just copied the colours from the pattern as closeley as possible. I've seen a few people be bold and make some different coloured Yell cardigans, I think the key is don't overthink it, jsut chose a family of colours that kinda look liek they go together and go for it 😁

Love your podcast. The cardigan is beautiful and a good decision to knit it in the round. I use 3.25 mm needles for the yarn you are using (both Jamieson & Smith and Biches et Buches) but I am a loose knitter. The yarn will bloom after blocking and with two colors in every row its a dense fabric. So keep that in mind. For a swatch I start with the sleeves if they are bottom up. So if its not the right gauge its nog so much of sorry-time and if the gauge is spot on you have already started the first sleeve. Love. To follow the whole process of knitting this beautie 🤩😍

If you reach Oslo, i can provide emotional support for when you inevitably end up (and blow your entire budget) in garntopia 😂 also, definitely leage space for buying and then knitting with holiday yarn, there are so many places where you can buy things that are absolutely impossible to get in Australia

If youre moving to different locations frequently, bring even less than youd think. I backpacked for about 9 months and as much as i missed having cute fashionable outfits i just couldn't stop thinking about how i wanted to have even less things with me. Books, yarn etc can probably be found along the way?

For fingering weight socks my ideal is two at a time on an 80 cm circular, either 1.75 or 2 mm. For DK weight for some reason I prefer DPNs and I knit them on 3.23 mm needles.

1.75mm needles?!? OMG I didn't even know they made them that small!!!

Yeh it's a yarn called Woodlands, which they're not currently making. But keep an eye out cos they will posisbly make another run of it or something similar and tweedy in future.

I am swatching for the book club cardigan and watching videos pertaining to it. You mention a group chat from the knit along, is this available for everybody? I'd love to read all the tips and tricks that was discussed during the KAL cause I'm just now finding this cardigan.

Hey, I fear the chat has now been completely overwhelmed with other chat and it might be tough to sift through it all. I would look for Ali from Supercraftalicious on instagram, she made some great mods and documented them all on her Ravelry page, so I think that'd be a great start.

Do you know if anybody had issues with getting gauge? I've emailed Sari, but exploring all possibilities.

I use short circular needles for sock knitting. When I realized that I always dreaded the heel flap, I one day swapped out for a long circular needle at that point. It was like the heavens opened and the angels sang!
