I still have some pieces of white marble we bought from Marble, Colorado! Be sure and stop at the Redstone Inn nearby for an amazing meal if you go to Marble!
Took the road this past weekend (July 29, 2023), the past winter did a lot of damage to the road, it is not nearly as smooth as it is here, but still accessible with 4WD.
THANK YOU!!!! It's been 4-5 years since I have been up there. This was a great video, just like making the trip myself! Greatly appreciate ALL your efforts here
Thanks for the beautiful video! Even with the reflection, I love it, especially that you stopped at the lake for a little look. I watch this as I ride my stationary bike for a mini-vacation in the middle of winter.
Loved the music and the way you took your time even though a lot of the video was out of focus for me. Would love to go there to see one of Colorados best landmarks.
I highly recommend it. When we drove it years ago, an experienced offroad driver could have driven that road with 2wd no problem, but it has been at least 8 years since we were last out there, and I am unsure of the condition of the road.
Can I ask you a question. We are going there in a couple of weeks. Never been there before. I want to take some evening and night shots at the mill. (just after sunset) The local ATV rental needs their units back by 5:00pm, so that is not a option. (understandably) I have a F-150 4x4 truck. Do you think that is too big to drive this road? Also, how long dod it take you to drive from Marble to the mill? Thank you and really enjoyed the video.
Thanks so much, Robert! I've seen bigger trucks like that driving the road, but they do seem to have a tougher time; and if it's after dark during part of your drive, I don't know... I think I'd almost try to talk to some locals, get a feel for it. It took us about 2 hours to drive to the mill, and then a couple hours back. It takes 3-4 hours roundtrip, depending how many times you have to stop and back up to a turnout to let someone else go by. I wish you all the best. It's such a beautiful place to visit!
I was there in 1986 and there was no road that you could drive back to Crystal. We had to hire a guy with a 4X4 jeep to take us there, and it took us an hour and a half to go 4 miles.
debbie shank yep, we did the Jeep tour our first visit there, and then we drove it ourselves the next. It’s starting to become a pretty popular place. And yes, it takes awhile just to go a few miles. So beautiful, though.
@@MelLockcuff Yes it is beautiful. And when I was there, there were 2 elder sisters still living in what buildings that were left of the town and the guy who took us there by the jeep, had to make that trip once a week to take them their mail and supplies until he went back the next week. Unbelievable!!
So do they rent UTVs out of Marble? Is that how people usually get there? This is fascinating! I'll be road tripping through the part of the country this month, and while I don't think I'll be able to see Crystal this time, my research on what to do in White River National Forest led me to finding this. Im doing the trip solo and Im not confident enough in my skills to do this trek alone, but this is 100% now on my bucket list to come back and see someday.
I'm honestly not sure which direction it faces. We've been there both morning and afternoon, and both times were incredible. A partly cloudy day lends to the best photos, in my opinion.
Is the little pink outhouse still standing near the mill? It had a sign on it that read: Powder Room.. Last time I saw it was in the late 80's or early 90's...
Thank you! I myself am afraid of heights. While there are a few spots that made me pretty nervous, this was really not a bad drive. I think I had a bit of a harder time going up Mount Evans than this. And it's very much worth it when you see the mill. It's just so beautiful. The entire drive is gorgeous. I will say, the beginning of the drive, where you actually turn onto the gravel road that leads to the mill was where I wanted to go back. lol It was very intimidating, but the road did get better.
Thanks for doing this video. I'm looking forward to visiting next year. Do you think a Subaru Outback could make it to the falls? Or, do you think we need a high clearance 4-wheel drive?
Hi Michael, I would definitely recommend a high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle. There are a few tricky places, and it's better to be safe than sorry. Enjoy!!
Awesome video, it doesn't look like ATV's are restricted on this road? Is there parking at the bottom of the trail for a pickup and an ATV on a trailer?
Thank you! And good question. That I am not sure. Lots of ATV's ride the road, but I'm not sure about parking. There is an ATV rental place in the town of Marble, which is the beginning of the road. They might be able to tell you.
I'm not sure. We've tried to find info about them, but it's kinda hard to find. My guess is we'd have to contact the town of Marble to get more information, but I haven't done it yet. We'd love to stay there sometime.
It was not bad when we were last there, which has been several years now. I would definitely recommend a 4wd vehicle, but it was an easy drive overall.
Actually, it's all private property around the Mill. But you can park on the side and walk up to the edge of the road. There are lots of photo opps just right along the road. It's so beautiful.
I believe that was part of a mine. There's a ton of history around this mill and the community of Crystal. A local author, Roger A. Neal, who has spent his summers there since he was a kid, has written several books about the area.
Judging from memory, there are some spots in which I imagine a Dodge Charger would definitely struggle. We haven’t been there in years, so I have no idea what condition the road is in now. Good luck.

That's pretty cool, Gretta!
My husband and a few friends will be staying in Marble Colorado this summer. Thank you for this video so we know what to expect for the drive 😆
That sounds like a lot of fun, Lzzy! We really enjoyed our stay in marble years ago. It's a beautiful area, and the people are so nice.
Thank you for this video! I watched the whole thing. Its so beautiful :) Im going there soon
Thank you!! I hope you enjoy every second of your trip. It's such a beautiful place!

Thank you for sharing this. We know now what to expect on our way there 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks for watching!

Carolyn, thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy it. That's a really great idea... Exercise with the road to Crystal! I love it.
Carolyn, what a great idea! Road trip while you exercise. I love it.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching.
Thank you, thank you! I was wondering if my car could make this trip. Looks like I'll be hiring a jeep!
I'm glad it helped!

Question 🙋… do you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to Crystal Mill??

Hey Sarah, you can rent ATVs, UTVs, and even automobiles out of Marble. You can also hike to the mill, but it's a long hike! I hope this was of help.
what direction does the mill face? What is the best time to photograph it, morning or afternoon?
I'm honestly not sure which direction it faces. We've been there both morning and afternoon, and both times were incredible. A partly cloudy day lends to the best photos, in my opinion.
Is the little pink outhouse still standing near the mill? It had a sign on it that read: Powder Room.. Last time I saw it was in the late 80's or early 90's...
There was a more recently built wooden outhouse, but it wasn't pink.
Looks like you took the road south of Sheep Mtn. Did you return the same way or head back on the North side of the Mtn?
We returned the same way on this trip. We'd like to get out there and do the entire loop.
Love your video! Do you think this drive would be a challenge for someone who is afraid of heights? Thanks!
Thank you! I myself am afraid of heights. While there are a few spots that made me pretty nervous, this was really not a bad drive. Oh wow. A Subaru? You must’ve been new here. 😂
But I do hope you made it!
Thanks you! What’s your tire pressure on this trail?
How many miles is this trek -- Toyota tacoma 4x4 do it??

Awesome video! I wonder how often people stay at the cabins at the end of the video?
I'm not sure. We've tried to find info about them, but it's kinda hard to find. My guess is we'd have to contact the town of Marble to get more information, but I haven't done it yet. We'd love to stay there sometime.
Mel Lockcuff interesting. Me too. Pretty place.
What road do I need to take? I just heard it’s in Colorado
How rough is the drive getting to lizard lake?
It was not bad when we were last there, which has been several years now. I would definitely recommend a 4wd vehicle, but it was an easy drive overall.
great video... we rented a UTV in Marble to make our trip to the mill. this experience will stick w/ me for a long time.
Joseph, thank you! Us too. We've been twice now because we love it there so much.
So can u just park off to the side anywhere there and start hiking?!
Actually, it's all private property around the Mill. But you can park on the side and walk up to the edge of the road. There are lots of photo opps just right along the road. It's so beautiful.
Where do we rent the 4 wheelers?
At 28:04 there’s some kind of old, man made, structure on the left side of the road. What is that??
I believe that was part of a mine. There's a ton of history around this mill and the community of Crystal. A local author, Roger A. Neal, who has spent his summers there since he was a kid, has written several books about the area.
Mel Lockcuff ooh, nice lead. Thanks!
Do people swim here?
Believe it or not, we have witnessed people jumping off of the rocks into the creek below the mill. It's against the rules.
Love it! Also what’s the music?
Thank you! I believe it's Nostalgia Fields by Pryor Meadows from Premium Beat.
What were you driving?
John, we were in a Toyota 4Runner.
@@MelLockcuff Thank you, we have a Ford Excursion. I feel like that might be to big and wide.
@@johnwpresko I usually go by how wide those Jeeps are that they take the tours with. If it's wider than those, it might not be wise.

I would love to live in such a place as this too. So beautiful and peaceful!
I’m thinking of trying this next weekend, weather permitting. Think I can make it in a rented Dodge Charger ? Love the trip
Judging from memory, there are some spots in which I imagine a Dodge Charger would definitely struggle. We haven’t been there in years, so I have no idea what condition the road is in now. Good luck.
did it work out for you? thinking of trying in my VW Golf but I'll probably just end up renting an SUV.
@@coleh4860 never made it, my wife’s agenda was more important 🥲
That stupid ass music will be stuck in my head now.
Change the music to heavy metal.
how far is the trip if walked?
Pumarun, it is about 9 miles out and back.
@@MelLockcuff nope too old for that, do you know any good areas in durango, co
